The Portal 2 Thread **Warning May Contain Spoilers**

sorry if its been asked but I dont want to read through this and have anything spoiled.
Does co-op give anything away from the sp or are they two different stories. Should I hold off on coop until I beat sp?

I'm only through the 3rd test chamber batch (batches of 8) in co-op, but so far the only thing that is spoiled is some of the new puzzle solving tools/features. No story related content that I have noticed so far (so you can at least play for a few hours first).

For Portal2? Already? Hell, the world record for the original Portal is still 10 minutes from when you wake up to destroying the last core.

Edit: Yeah just checked, Portal 2 is not on SDA yet.

fastest I see with scripts is 13 minutes, and normal play of 24 minutes

where is 10?

Non story spoilers. Puzzle question.

What is the correct solution to the puzzle involving one laser, 3 laser misdirection cubes, a door that is opened by having two switches activated by lasers, and one launcher in the bottom of the room?

I solved it by putting a portal above the launcher, putting another portal on the ground level wall, then walking through the wall portal and VERY quickly shooting a new portal exit on various high walls to slingshot myself or cubes using the launcher.

Obviously that's a solution, but it feels like the wrong solution since it required really fast aiming, and even with a mouse, it was kind of a crapshoot and each launch took multiple attempts till I got the second portal in the right spot.

If no one can figure it out from my description I'll take screens later. I don't want to go searching for portal puzzle screens because I haven't finished the game and don't want to spoil anything :lol

anyone ever read harlan ellison's "I have no mouth and I must scream?"

I really get a strong type of vibe like that from the game. :)

Not completed yet, on chap 7

I just can't recall any puzzle where I had 3 redirection cubes.

I can think of two puzzles where we got 2, but no faith plates.

If it helps, the room has tall ceilings. The laser is on a high platform on the eastern edge of the room. The exit is on the same plane, opposite side of the room, and is guarded by a bunch of turrets you need to fry with the laser.

The faith plates are just above ground level on a platform a little too high to jump. There's 3 of them lined up in a row. The only way to reach them is to put a portal on the ceiling above.

Is it where the faith plate smacks things into a low ceiling above it, and the lasers are high up?

I did that by putting a portal above the faith plate and the other in the floor, you'll fall through the floor onto the faith plate which will ping you back through the portal, you'll then fly upwards, and back down through the portal. As you're bouncing like this continuously you need to aim the portal gun in the split second you're in the section above the faith plate, at a wall and when you're pinged back through the portal in the ceiling the momentum will send you flying out of the new exit.

I don't know if that's the intended solution because it requires fast aiming in the split second you're between the faith plate and the low ceiling above it, but it works easy enough. You use that same technique to collect all 3 laser cube things and redirect the same laser back and forth through those power nodes.

That's the one and that's exactly how I solved it. It just felt like a really hacked together solution :lol Almost every other puzzle had an almost turn based feel to it, so to solve this one using frantic split second aiming felt weird.

Oh yea.

I used redirection cube to point laser at first target.
Hopped over to that target, used redirection cube to point laser at next target on entrance platform.
Hopped to it, and used another redirection cube to fry turrets and point toward exit door trigger.
Hopped to exit platform.

If your having issues hopping around... Put portal above faith plate, put portal on ground, jump through.
Faith plate will bounce you back with significant force, and while your suspended in the air, you have plenty of time to pick target for the faith plate's portal, as you fall you'll have plenty of moment to rocket yourself through that next portal to wherever.
No split second timing to worry about.

Yeah it didn't feel right, if that is the actual solution the console gamers are going to have a hard time thumbing the analogue sticks in place to make the shots, it doesn't really feel very elegant but it was the first thing that came to mind and it work.

Apologies, should have used spoiler tags.

What ground are you putting the portal on? The only usable surface I could see (while still being able to hit the ceiling above the faith plate) were on the wall, which is why I needed to very quickly shoot the new exit portal. There was no half pipe style situation I could setup.

There's some right next to it in the middle of the room...

It makes sense now you can redirect the exit portal when up in the air in the middle of the room rather than between the faith pad and the ceiling which is harder, heh.

3nd day into Portal and I already passed half of it.
(I just started ch. 6)

My superior intelligence reigns supreme.

Am up to Chapter 7 and so far have enjoyed the experience, albeit that the puzzles have been a bit too simplistic for my liking.

Have also played some co-op which was entertaining, however I really despise the $DLC component. Yes its all superfluous and does not affect the core game, but really this is no better than the horse armor debacle. In fact, its probably worse given how expensive all the items are and the limited re-playability of co-op in this type of game.

I will probably be chastised for this opinion, but I honestly think that the time and resources put into designing and implementing this lame DLC would have been better spent on improving the core game

not sure why people are complaining about DLC. just opt out. most people never buy DLC.

Hrm

I was going to say I have never bought any DLC, but I realized I did get a couple of just cause 2 guns,
for which there is never any ammo. :/

Where do I find this $DLC component  Also how do I get that "console" string to show up at my screen

U know... just in case I wanna bitch and moan.

Finished it.

I enjoyed the game (there was some really good moments) but is was too short and way too easy (I'll see how much co-op adds to it in the future.)

I agree it's a shame that they removed much of the portal jumping to make it easier for console players. Now it's just setting it up then it feels like a cannonball, no skill invoked :(

Much of the game seemed more like I was playing halflife2 (but with no enemies to shoot at), than the original portal. The goo was cool, but I feel they could have made much more of it.

Not the value for money I'm used to from a valve game or the re-playability, I really hope HL2.ep3/ HL3 is better than this.

I put about 5 hours into co-op and about 5 on single player. Overall I felt like the game was a good length (it was actually longer then many games I have played recently) and considering valve is usually pretty good about releasing free content updates I was extremely happy with my purchase. Absolutely fantastic game and I would definitely recommend it.

I agree, it may not be long, but considering the amount of updates that went into tf2, I see new maps on the horizon.

The ending is glorious!!!!

Yeah I love the ending.
I'm in Space. I'm in Space.
Also the orchestra of turrets.

Cave Johnson has some of my favorite lines in the game. I LOVE the line about lemons. JK Simmons did an absolutely fantastic job.

Time played in Portal 2 about 16 hours with 1 run through in SP and 1 run through on Co-op. (maybe 2 hours on pause, and 30 minutes of the SP replayed due to playing it on a different machine).

I really don't see the problem. Co-op isn't a multi-player option tacked on to a SP game its a complete Portal Campaign.

Thought it was awesome, GlaDOS, Wheatly, and C. Johnson, just as an audio track would have been worth the price.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. Wasn't a $40 game IMO (coming from Valve anyway), and only 2-3 of the puzzles took me longer than 10 minutes or so to complete.

JK Simmons' every line of dialog is solid gold, as evidenced by his time as J. Jonah Jameson in the Spiderman movies. I love that guy.

seconded.. thirded... whatever...

SP was less than 5 hours for me. The story was good, but I feel like they missed a lot of opportunities.
Only 1 lvl with a moving platform?
No gear type devices?
They should have just taken a look at the incredible machine games. After all, the whole facility is supposed to be a machine...

:(

Just finished the coop in about 5 hours, alot of fun. The puzzles at the end took awhile. Much harder and more fun than sp (towards the end at least).

I fell in love with the original portal because it was something fresh and new. Having just finished portal 2 I am a bit disappointed. The game was beautiful and the audio commentary was great. I suppose you can only be surprised by new types of gameplay once.

The coop is a little different. Playing it with my wife for an hour was quite enjoyable. Adding another person creates a new dimension. I hope it can make up for what the SP was lacking.

I think this was the greatest game I have ever played. Humor was a win. Writing was a win. I beet it in one sit down in 6 hours at 11:30 central on release. I could not stop. I give it a 10/10. But I like space. Cant wait to get to space.

The coop pretty much doubles the game and is much funner than I anticipated. I know most people might count it as "multiplayer", so it doesn't really count. But this isn't multiplayer in the traditional sense. It counts more as an extension of the singleplayer to me, just outside the main storyline.

Add the automatic replay just because of how good it is, and then add going back for missed achievements if you're into that. There's really some good replay-ability here.

It didn't even cost the same as a AAA title, which is what everyone is comparing it to. Sure, the console version were, but you essentially get two copies with the PS3 version. The point is, it could easily be had for $40 at launch.

10/10 for me without a doubt.

ULTIMATE SPOILER

cave johnson + caroline (glados) = chell

cave johnson + caroline (glados) = chell

This sounds very plausible.

I just beat the game just now and I feel liberated. No cliff hangers, straightforward and just ends it where/how it should be ended.

put 19 hrs into the game in 3 days. Valve seems to know the secret sauce for virtual crack because I never get hooked to video games other than Valve's releases. That's 6 hours per day that I played and probably 3 hour sessions at a time

Cave Johnson definitely kills it.

There's a trophy case near the beginning of that area. A newspaper hanging in the case reads something like, "The future is under the earth's crust, says science maverick." I laughed for like 30 seconds.

I may change my Steam name to Science Maverick.
