Xbox 360 was the highest-selling video game console in March, according to NPD Group, an independent market research firm. Xbox 360 has been the number one selling console in the United States for nine out of the last 10 months. Xbox 360’s success last month and over the last several months was driven by strong console and software sales, as well as ongoing consumer demand for Kinect, the fastest selling consumer electronics device, according to Guinness World Records.

All the people out there saying it was the same as the Eyetoy and would flop. Where are those people now you ask? Hiding under their Wii no less ;)

Yep, the Kinect saved Microsoft big time. If they had not released it they would be hurting right now. Sony's content just keeps coming even though Move has not been marketed anywhere near as much, but they do not have to rely on Move like Microsoft has to do with Kinect.

* Yes I am aware I might get hit with some clever responses with that comment but quite frankly looking at the past year and well into next Sony has a huge amount of A-AAA content coming. A lot of that might have something to do with Microsoft abandoning the majority of top exclusive content for Kinect content and it will more then likely pay off.

Microsoft will be heavily relying on Kinect and from what I have heard they have advanced controllers coming out for the platform and much needed A-AAA kinect games but we will have to wait till E3. That being said if you are not into motion controls Sony's platform is just dominating. For the last year it seems on the front covers of OXBM they have had nothing but third party multiplatform games, then looking at PSM they have had basically a look at all exclusives with obvious others thrown in every few months. That can be taken with a huge grain of salt but it certainly says something about where the platforms are heading.

I like the 360, but still don't get Kinect. I thought it would do as well as other odd peripherals (flop), but obviously it hasn't. ;)

I was more cautious though, saying I would wait for any Kinect games worth buying. None of the Kinect games interest me even now.

The only reason it is number 1 is because you have to buy a new one every year to replace your red ringed/sound no-video/open tray P.O.S. - brilliant planned obsolesence. Infuriates me when you have a pile of games costing thousands of dollars you can't play until you drop another $300-$400 on a new 360. I haven't replaced my Wii or PS3 yet - and have had to buy 4 Xbox's - which were "just" out of warranty.

I still think the Kinect will be just a gimmick. It had a ton of hype and people are still enjoying the novelty. But really even the Wii-mote is a better controller.

You didn't HAVE to do anything. If you're posting here chances are you either were an early adopter or should have been well aware of their poor reliability, I mean for chrissakes there were signs of trouble there as early as launch day.

Now when despite these warning signs you bought one and it died you didn't have to buy another, you CERTAINLY didn't have to buy another after that and by the time you're going on to your fourth it's well past "buyer beware" and into "it's your own fault" for continuing to throw good money after bad on a console with engineering flaws better understood than perhaps any other consumer electronics item ever (and certainly within the last half decade).

At this point you're really making a conscious decision to reward them, particularly as you keep buying them new. Come on, THINK about it man. Clearly you're a glutton for punishment.

As for the Kinect it is unfortunately the latest bit of proof in a long, sad, line of evidence that no matter how smart each subsequent generation thinks they are, people buy mostly based upon advertising and what the people they know buy.

Microsoft, Apple, and IBM all either do or at one point have made their fortunes off of that sorry reality. You could probably add most other well-known tech giants to the list as well.

Gimick or not, they still sold a crap load of them ... and continue to sell them

Most everyone I know has replaced the wii, with the kinect by now, especially if they enjoyed the fitness games at all.

Good, us Sony (Have a gad taste in our mouth people) don't have to be convinced why XBox is staying at No.1. and hope it continues. I take it that the bad press recently hasn't helped any.:D Maybe Sony hired some other marketing company who believes that negative press isn't good for the share holders. Na that couldn't be it makes too much sense.

I'm not going to disagree with your assessment of throwing good money at cheaply made hardware - I'm a die hard advocate for PC gaming, and the money I've thrown away on Xbox 360 replacements could have netted one hell of a nice SLI/Crossfire setup. The bad thing is I have to continue to buy these damn Xboxes for my kids - who's grandmas/aunts/uncles/themselves all buy games for them. I'm not ranting saying that the Xbox isn't a fun experience and the games suck, because they don't - My whole point is I love when these articles say that "Xbox top seller month of March" - how many of these sales are out of necessity for people to continue to play their game libraries because of shoddy hardware? You don't see those numbers in the monthly statistics...

Good job for MS.

That said, I still want to see the number of units actually Sold vs the number replaced under warranty. I seriously doubt they are number 1 sold for unique purchases...

MS didn't charge a dime for replacements for years. It's your own damn fault for throwing money at MS when you didn't have to.

The only 1 of my Xbox was replaced no charge by M$ - The rest of them died AFTER the warranty period. I guess you're one of the lucky ones....

I made the silly mistake of buying one of the originals a while back. It's so loud I can't even stand to play it.

Last night I was gonna pull the 360 out of retirement and put it in the bedroom to watch Netflix. As I was rummaging for the power brick I suddenly remembered that Microsoft is the ONLY company that makes you pay them an additional fee to watch Netflix. Since I canceled xbox live before they raised the price, I put the power brick back into the bin and decided a Apple TV would be better anyways for that usage. Mines a launch model and extremely loud.

i dont have a xbox360,ps3,wii just a pc, i belive in the only way to play games is on a pc nothing more.

Sony has a huge amount of A-AAA content coming

When exactly?

The most overused statement in console history.
