So, I really hate my shitty bluetooth headset but want to take calls in my car...

I've got an Android - samsung moment and an old car with the cassette adaptor running to the stereo,, I usually have my phone plugged into this to listen to music. When a call comes the music automatically stops and when I hit the green button I can hear the person calling me over the speakers, but they can't hear me. With these phones they come with earbuds using the 3 ring jack connector

so if someone calls me and I'm listening to music on my headphones I click the button on the wire and can hear and speak to them.

Now this is what I'm unsure of it seems these earbuds don't have a microphone on them so would it be possible to solder the 3 ring connection or the whole wire with jack connection to the cassette adapter and be able to use the speakers in the car as a microphone to be able to speak to people as well as hear them?

You have to have a microphone somewhere...your speakers are not a microphone. The button you are pressing presumably has a microphone adjacent. Your proposed scenario will not work at all. Having an extra ring makes no difference when the cord retains the same number of wires and has no microphone.

yeah...IF you had a microphone and IF you could tie it into that 3rd ring somehow, then it might work...but you can't just magically make speakers into mics because you add a jack that has a 3rd ring.

But my understanding of any speaker is that it can be used as a microphone, if you plug a pair of earphones into a microphone jack you can use them as a microphone.

Still you are probably right, my headphones must have a microphone attached to them and I would have to differentiate somewhere in the wiring different speakers used for input and output.

Not sure how you would think any speaker(s) can also be used as a microphone..? Speakers are output-only devices (as in they output sound). A microphone is an input device for which you would have to have a dedicated piece of hardware (a microphone) for.

My advice would be to get a better BT headset or install a BT enabled head unit into your car. I installed this into my Altima a few years ago it's it works great (you can see my review of it in there :D). I guess they have a newer model now.

A microphone is essentially a speaker that is used to input sound, but no, I do not believe that the headphone jack is capable of receiving signal, so no, the original poster will not be able to simultaneously use his headphone jack as a microphone input as well as speaker output.

If he's in an older car, the best bet would be to change out the radio like was posted above with one that has built in blutooth. That would solve his/her problem and likely would provide better input for playing mp3's in the car, possibly even over the blutooth connection.

I can't remember the part number but Griffin sells a and adapter cable for the iPod Touch that adds a mike for voice commands. The OP would connect the adapter cable to the phone as it has the three ring connector and the cassette adapter to the other end of the cable.

This is how I do voice commands while connected to my cars AUX input.

It might work...

I understand that, but the speakers in his car lack the hardware to record input and send that signal back to the device. In other words, they are not microphones, hah. Unless I'm misunderstanding what he was asking..? But yeah, I doubt the phone could even use a mic plugged into the 3.5mm jack. I know my Droid can't.

Also, that's exactly what I use my linked head unit for too. As soon as I turn on my car, BT connects to my phone and I have Tasker (an app that can script/automate virtually any task) set up to launch Pandora so I have music as soon as I start driving without touching or connecting anything .

Cheers, I think this would make a great solution.

Thanks for all the other input everyone.
