Who will be shut down if P2P becomes illegal? According to this guy, not only will P2P sites be closed down, websites that report on P2P news will have to "change their tune" too. Umm, what?

Once this happens, these sites will either shut down voluntarily, radically change their business model, or be shut down by authorities. Even ones that are outside of the US may be “virtually’ shut down through a court order to their US webhosts.

"Streaming" a felony? Can we get a fucking sense of priorities here. <insert long string of profanity here>

Eventually all websites will just move out of the country. US is just screwed up and corrupt. Corporations can manipulate the government to do whatever they want. Freedom has become the past. Other countries have more freedoms than us these days.

The corporations and those behind them are using the power of the U.S. to control the freedom of everyone not only the U.S.
It all started at the beginning of the 20th century and it goes way beyond greed.
Ever heard of the CFR?

Huh? Did I sleepwalk all the way to China last night?? I can't even count the number of games and CDs I've purchased after trying them out via p2p. You can't get a good idea of a CD by listening to 30 second clips, and you can't get an unbiased idea of how good a game is by playing a carefully crafted demo. As far as I'm concerned, if this actually happens, I will never again purchase a newly released entertainment product at full price; I'll set a purchasing cap at 25% of MSRP and wait for those hefty price drops. There's no way I'm letting those Mercedes S-Class-driving executives move up to Bentleys on my dollar. Greedy bastards.

wait, so if MSN and Yahoo and Google put up the news of all the torrent sites (outside/inside the US) shuts down for US use they will be shut down too????????

If he tried that he's gonna loose the whole case. stick with what you know and leave the rest to pro.

Felony... roflcopter.
"What are you in for man?"
".... The new Justin Bieber album :("

it will go on and on......every time they plug a hole another will spurt free stuff......and so the cycle continues....

Yeah, its funny you can try a car at the seller's shop before buying it, so you are sure about every little detail, but you can't try the whole music album before buying it. How is any of it different? You tell me.

Whoever wrote this piece is a chimpanzee. He's talking about shutting down slashdot.org and wired.com. Yea, good luck with that.

And if the jurisdiction of this nonsense only extends to USA, all these sites will at most experience 2 hours of downtime while their site admins bring webservers in other parts of the world online.

They're waving a fly swatter at an ocean of hornets. Good luck dumbasses. bahahahahaha

+1. Add 'Rockefeller' & 'Warburg' to your search for some enlightening, albeit depressing reading. The heads of industry have pushed their way into politics, and secretly formed an oligarchy right in front of our faces. Americans in general are so stupid that they not only allowed it to happen, but they continue to be die hard supporters of one party or the other even though both parties are too intertwined with industry to act in favor of the people.

Where did the talk begin of making online piracy a felony? When did copyright infringement become a criminal offense and not a civil one? And just how do they plan to pay for the enforcement if such law changes occurred?

I'm all for legitimately purchasing digital goods, but I just can't agree with any sort of criminal punishment for the illegal sharing of digital goods.

Copyright:
Stripping the rights to liberty and the pursuit of happiness from millions to fuel the short-term profits of hundreds.

Somehow I have a feeling that the people who invented these laws never foresaw this lunacy.

What I don't understand is why we never shut down shipping or interstate highways in the past. i mean isn't that used for FAR more piracy and grey market that anything digital?

Why is this shocking at all?

Politicians don't give a shit because their salaries afford them the ability to not be effected by things like this.

It's easy to pass laws saying you have to pay for everything when you don't really have to care about money, and in doing so you make more money to support and further your career.

Eventually our government will crumble, it's sad and kind of amusing how games like MGS and Deus Ex, and books like Jennifer Government really have been forecasting what's going to happen.

Not that it's surprising at all..

they better start building bigger jails .... 3 songs 3 felonys 3 strikes = life lol

oh hey kind of like China in how they block websites that they deem "illegal"

Maybe the jails are full of drug users so they'll have to commute P2P's sentences due to overcrowding. On the other hand, jail might not be that bad if it's just filled to the brim with a bunch of other people who are only there because they downloaded the Britney Spear's anthology.

If jails got too overcrowded, they'd probably sent you to fight in Libya for 'freedom' of the 'people' of oil or people's whose land contains economic strategical advantage. Trick is, only the real marines who volunteered will get guns. Not you, your a prison for your felony of downloading music. You'll get to patrol with batons and a bullet sensor that says when bullets are fired, approximately where they are coming from and men will guns will be shortly dispatched to your location to aid or retrive your body. Just hide for 5-45 minutes depending on traffic and road conditions.

I kid, I kid but I'm depressed were starting another war. First day? 167 Tomahawk cruise missles fired during the first day. So far, the estimated cost of the operations involved from mobilization of troops, ammo spent, downed jet fighter and the missles themselves is already 100 million dollars(Source: BBC World News report). Yet, we can't afford to pay teachers.

Only 100 Mill? Id think more than that. What do they think its going to cost to replace the 167 tomahawks alone? Over 175 million...

As long as there's places to dl files for free ill be there felony or not. The hogs behind this just want more control.

Oh damn. That would suck. :)

Freedom of speech is a real bitch sometimes. You can't talk about illegal activities, even if you don't engage in them. That's the reason you don't see magazines like High Times... Wait... Yea, I don't think they could go after sites that report on P2P news. Of course, they always seem to have some government justification to be able to shut them down depending on their own interests.

What is the...

How are they...

What about the...

What? P2P cannot be made illegal. At least, I hope not. There are many legit uses for it.

P2P illegal? Would that include ALL Bitorrents? Doesn't WoW still use Bitorrents to update the game for people? ;-)

I guess nobody read the link that he claims to base his post on. There's nothing in that link that indicates a change in the law is forthcoming. Heck, the law blog isn't certain what "streaming" means, though they assume it's P2P. This ain't gonna happen folks.

I don't like it that people d/l music (without paying for it), making a technology illegal isn't the solution. I'm not sure how it could be enforced. I'm pretty sure there are at least a couple of ways to do P2P without exposing yourself.

^ LOL it's pretty funny reading some of these responses when posters clearly haven't read the article.

Just to add to the above, this blog post was based on a white paper urging performing rights. It is just a policy recommendation.

this is silly, and whoever wrote that blog entry is an idiot. From the original article, the white house issued a report that urges Congress to “clarify that infringement by streaming . . . is a felony in appropriate circumstances.”

This is far from "The Fed has announced that soon the “unauthorized streaming of music” will be a felony."

and, "The Fed" typically means the federal reserve bank (which is not even part of the US government), not the white house office of management and budget (which is who really issued the statement).

what will be breath when we run out of oxygen? The answer to both is who cares since neither will ever happen.

WTF, copy right violations becoming a felony? We need to get everyone that is in office right now, OUT! I do not care what party they belong to, but this crap has to stop.

We need to do something. As an artist it pains me to see basically jack and shit for art now. Why? Because people can get it for free. This has nothing to do with morality, it has to do with the ease of access of getting it for free. Why would people pay for something that is just as easily accessed for free?

I know in my industry we are dying fast. And it is not for lack of innovation, talent, or creativity. It is about the fact that if people can get it for free they will. Period. Good luck when there is no creativity left. We can just have machines do it all. Yay. Thank God I am an opera singer, and make my money with my voice. We are still a ways away from reproducing that perfectly. Soon we will not need humans for anything,..

As for P2P, you are either naive or a liar if you even consider arguing that the majority is not for illicit purposes. The reality is though it cannot be made illegal for simple right of free speech purposes, and the recording industry will be gone soon enough. Technology marches on...
