Maximus IV Extreme w/ RST causes drive to disappear

Here's a weird one,

I just got a B3 Maximus board yesterday. Installed it and performed a clean install of Windows. I installed the latest RST drivers and found that the D drive (my 1 TB storage) disappeared. I also started receiving USB power surge warnings for the USB 3 controller. I uninstalled it and my D drive showed back up and the USB warning went away. What is VERY weird, is that I also have another 1 TB drive connected to the same Intel 3Gbs controller (same model) and it does not disappear. I called ASUS support and they weren't sure on what the problem was, but that replacing the board may be required.

I wanted to see if anyone else knew of this issue, or if any other MIVE owners have the RST drivers running without a problem.
 
I've had this problem almost exactly. Installed over this past weekend and on Tuesday, I booted up completely, browsed the web for a little, then tried to access Steam. Steam and the one game I had downloaded so far (F:NV) were the only things on a 150 GB WD Velociraptor. Windows would not load up Steam and would not load F:NV at all. I restarted to see if it could help, but when I got back to the black "Starting Windows" screen, it took 5 minutes or so to get to the deskstop as compared to the normal 20 seconds or so(SSD boot drive).

Device manager said the drive was up and working properly, but the drive didnt show up und My Computer at all. Drive Management detected the drive, but said it was not initialized. Upon trying to initialize it, an error mesage popped up saying Access was Denied.

I shut down, unplugged the SATA power and data cables and plugged them back in to no effect. I have not tried using another SATA data cable but will do so this evening. I suggest you do the same on your end as well. Responses from other sources with Velociraptors say the drive is most likely dead but I'm going to keep trying. Right now I have the drive unplugged, and that at least fixed the boot-up time issue.

What driver version of RST came in your MB disk? Has there been a new one released? I will check mine this afternoon.

In regards to the USB 3.0 errors, the same thing also happened to me with a WD 1TB USB 3.0 external drive. The system first reported a power surge to the device, and after a few minutes the drive was no longer recognized. I now have some sort of error in the device manager with the "ACS - 6xxxx" driver or something like that. I'm at work now so I do not have access.

I know none of this really helps you but these have just been my experiences.

It helps a lot! I'm just glad I wasn't the only one. I know the drive isn't dead, I'm thinking of doing a clean all command via diskpart with RST uninstalled. I had these drives setup as a RAID 0 a while back, maybe there's something stuck in the controller card that RST is seeing. The USB power surge scares me, I think I might RMA it with ASUS just to be safe.

I tried using the 10.2.x.x version from station-drivers, and then the 10.1.x.x version from Intel. I went to the ASUS site for the MIVE and noticed they removed the RST download from the driver list, as well as the Intel Management Engine. Maybe they know something....

I was able to get it fixed... here's what I did.

- Performed a clean install of Windows on my SSD
- From Windows, deleted the volume on the backup drive, formatted and verified it is pulling up
- Connected the problem drive (no RST installed) and copied the contents to the backup drive
- Deleted the volume on the data drive and formatted the drive
- Installed RST and rebooted
- Verified the PC booted and both 1 TB drives showed up
- Copied the backup data over to the "old" data drive (the data drive is now the backup drive to minimize the amount of data transfers)

Hope this helps. I haven't received any USB power surge warnings either.
 
I just got a new B3 MIVE back from newegg (RMA'd the last one) pretty much becuase of this problem. It would seem that if you install the RST driver (10.x) then the computer stalls on startup and you're done.

I'll try your trick Adam1203 as I'm running a RAID5 setup and RST drivers would be pretty helpful.

It's also intersting that with this new driver CD the RST drivers are not installed by default. I think something is up and Asus knows it.

Update: On the asus website there are new RST drivers as of 3/17. I'll be trying those ...

Cool, let me know how you make out.

I've been issue free after performing those steps.

Also, make sure you turn of LPM via the registry if you're using a SSD.

Tried the new drivers and no go .. stalls on start-up. Pretty bad considering the expense of this board and the RST drivers have been out forever.

Looks like there is a new bios (1485) that fixes this issue .. will be trying that when I get home.

I have this board with bios 1485 and two separate RAID 0 arrays on the Intel controller. One is a two SSD Raid 0 and the other is four WD RE3 drives in Raid 0 and both work excellent. I never tried to set up the arrays before updating to this bios so hopefully the bios was the issue you guys were / are having.
 
I've had a lot of problems with my M4E, so much so I RMAed the board. USB ports would randomly stop working and nothing but a CMOS reset would restore them, computer would refuse to boot because the boot drive was not recognized at random times or it would just freeze mid-boot. I picked up the P8P67 WS Revolution while waiting for my RMA to return and haven't had any problems with it. Granted, the other board might have been defective, but I think I'll just keep the Revolution, just too much hassle to rebuild the system and these reports suggest to me that perhaps the M4E is immature in the BIOS or otherwise.
 
Some results ...

With a fresh install of Windows 7 SP1,

1204 + RST 10.5 = works
1485 + RST 10.5 = works

Some observations & concerns

- RAID5 dropped the #5 port drive after both bois updates (deleted and rebuilt array afterwords each time, since it was empty - but after there is lots of data on it this could be a considerable problem)
- Explore freezing and not responsive ( can't get driver CD to open, can't update my Windows Update settings, can't install Windows Essentials AV - seems to be a bad install - will be re-installing again tonight - but if this is a real problem could be deal breaker)
- Bois 1485 also seems to have included an iROG firmware update

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and help, hopefully another clean install tonight will clear up the explorer freezing issue.
 
Sorry to bump this old thread, but does anyone know fix for this? (USB POWER SURGE)

I have enabled NEC controller in BIOS and also using RST 10.6.0.1002, is this warnning hardware or software related?
