Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Announced for release on 11/11/11.

I don't know if I could ever recommend that someone play oblivion in vanilla form. At the very least pick up OOO (oscuro's oblivion overhaul). That is THE must have mod for a lot of people. I would also highly recommend Qarl's texture pack. There are a bunch of others that I would argue highly enhance the game, but there are already plenty of lists out there.

If you do feel like going with 5+ mods, I'd start to look into OBMM (oblivion mod manager) which allows you to enable/disable mods with 1 click and check for/fix conflicts very easily. That might bring you into the realm of needing to consult google. I'd start with a youtube tutorial on OBMM.

The problem with Visual enhancers in Oblivion is that they can make the game crash if it exceeds 2GB in memory usage. Normally vanilla Oblivion won't even get close but when you start to add mods they get more and more demanding. I myself use the 4GB patch and the Oblivion Stutter to double the limited and for my mods it does fine.

Well peeking at the Skyrim forums it seems like Bethesda will be releasing more info about the game tomorrow. I wonder what it will be this time. Perhaps more screenshots and details about the game.

Screens? No, Try a VIDEO!

From the blog:

"So in less than 19 hours (10 AM EST), the world will see Skyrim in action. How will you prepare for tomorrow’s trailer? We suggest the following: 1) Join The Elder Council, 2) Gaze upon your new wallpaper, and 3) join the folks doing the dragon dance… and maybe let them know what the countdown is all about."

4) Bitch about how the engine might be gamebyro. :p

I was listening to Bethesda's podcast and they mentioned that in Skyrim we'll be able to change our major skills as we play and refine what we really want to be.
Don't remember if thia was mentioned before, in any of the gameinformer articles (or some other article), but I'm only listening to it now.
If done right, I think this is a great idea and can actually be a factor of immersion in the game. As in, we start out thinking that we want to be a warrior, but as we progress in the game and find out more about magic capabilities (for example), we can change our skills to reflect our new interest.

Na their will be NO major skills. All skills will start out pretty much equal and you will simply use the skills you want to get better at. Coudln't really be more simple then that, but they are also implementing a global slowdown feature so the more total skill you gain the slower you will gain more skill. So someone who focuses in a few select skills will level those far faster then someone who tries to be everything all at once.

Anyways can't wait to see what the game looks like in action. Hopefully the revel will be a good one. Improved animations, AI and better visual streaming are priority on my most wanted list. Hopefully Bethesda is talented enough to design a game that will greatly improve on all area's of the previous one.

So, uh, Bethblog is being extremely slow. It was running fine until EXACTLY 10am, then it just... keeled over dead. I'm assuming it's from the sheer amounts of traffic the site is generating.

That's not what the Bethesda guy said, so I think I'll take his word, since you know, he's part of the company developing the game :)

Trailer looks good. Got to love the warrior walking around in a blizzard with short sleeves. ;)

Great, thanks. I just had a stroke and am being wheeled to the ER :p

The combat looks a lot more like Dark Messiah which is a good thing (and not surprising since Bethesda scalped Arkane Studios).

Graphics still look 5-years old...

As I said before, as long as everything else from Dark Messiah ends there...

Also, how I would love to have these graphics 5 years ago...Oh right, it would not run on that time's hardware and people would bitch that Bethesda can't code for crap!

If they make the final game as good as this trailer then it is gonna be so awesome. Epic open world gaming.

Oblivion was released in March of 2006, approximately five years ago.

EDIT: Actually, strike that. It looks as though every object casts shadows now, which is a feature Oblivion didn't have. Can't be certain by looking, but I suspect the renderer now uses deferred shading (only way it would be fast enough). Which means very low quality edge-detect anti-aliasing as opposed to true multisampling, assuming that's even an option.

But it will run on hardware from 5 (6) years ago: consoles -- and according to Bethesda it will "look the same as on PC apart from resolution and AA".

I'm not by any means saying Bethesda can't code for crap. On the contrary, if they got something like Oblivion (and what looks to be a somewhat-enhanced Skyrim) to run on a 3.2ghz in-order CPU and < 512mb of shared memory, they're doing something right.

What do you guys think of the animations in that trailer? I'm having a hard time making mental comparison for some reason.

In some scenes (like when he's hunting the elk in the autumn like scenry with brown leaves) the lighting looks awesome and the colors and textures look so vivid and vibrant. But in other scenes, namely the snow ones the textures and lighitng look pretty bad. I do agree with the above poster that the graphics do look a bit dated and DEF not up to todays standards. This really looks like it was made to run on the xbox 1st and pc 2nd (well what isn't these days).

I hope this trailer is only showing console graphics and that when we get the PC version we'll really be able to crank up the graphics. Or I hope that the mod community at least allows us.

Ok, show of hands.
Who else sang the theme song along with the trailer when watching this?

Oh man, looks better than I honestly expected.

looks amazing :)

They finally got some better animations too, which is a HUGE plus. I can't wait for this to be released.

WOW! That was Amazing! The game looks fantastic!

It appears from the looks of the trailer when you kill a dragon you get its essence...kind of like Highlander and the quickening .....fuckin awesome!.

What are today's standards ? CoD graphics which are worse than what Skyrim is showing in this trailer ?

Which was precisely my point. If five years ago I had this kind of graphics in Oblivion it would be awesome. Then again, I would not have hardware to run it.
