So...whats your mmo history?

I started with a little known gem called 10six by sega. Played that from closed beta all the way through the shutting down of the servers. After that no MMOs untill wow consumed me.

Since its essentially the same I will have to admit my first was a MUD. It was called The Eternal City. Best damn game I ever played. No game has lived up to its complexity, even EVE. Here is a list. Game setting was ancient Rome.

1. Perma Death. There was a way to revive yourself if you were a long time player but it did not occur often.

2. Player run society. Of course there were GMs but pretty much the entire game world was run by players. So there were laws and enforced by the police (cannot remember roman name) and then there were a couple different armies to join among many other groups.

3. Strong support from developers/GMs. There was not always a grand story to follow but the GMs would get heavily involved in the game. Its really something that is not easy to create on today's large scale. There were often random events where GMs would become monsters of different sorts (or even evil humans) and kidnap players. Then a band of players would need to get together and rescue the player(s) kidnapped.

4. You could play as good or as evil as you wanted but killing other players was punishable by death. You could buy illegal good such as masks. There was a hidden location for the thieves guild and you could learn to become a thief.

Does the Diablo series count?
I played Diablo 2 for several years. Making several characters under my account all maxed levels with pretty much the best armor/weapons available.

It got to the point that I spent so much time in those games that I lost the knack to play other types of games and when that happened...I had to quit.

everquest
DAOC

I loved 10-six, played in the beta. I remember having to call Segasoft to get in the beta through a magazine I had back then.

Was fun building up things and scooting around on your little hoverboard.

Everquest (years)
Everquest2 (years)
Vanguard (years)
WoW (Few Months)
Aoc (Few months)
Rift (Only time will tell) :D

Shit yeah! the beta of that game was fucking baller! There was a bug that let you apply as many modifers as you wanted to weapons. I had a tain that could hit anything on any manp and 1shot. Also shot at the rate of a machine gun. :D
Anyway, me and a few buddies systematically killed camps to spell out "Geko Sucks" across the face of planet visitor. For those who don't remember or weren't there Geko was one of the developers. So yeah...they reset the entire world that day. Probably my proudest gaming moment.
I also managed to take down a lord and nab his armor. That was pretty boss too. Good times.

UO - barely played, my dialup couldn't handle the lag

EQ1 - few years, my high school GPA suffered badly during that time.

DAoC - few months, couldn't find a good RvR guild on the server.

Shadowbane - friends nagged me to try this, but everyone quit after few weeks due to excess griefing.

Earth & Beyond - beta only, didn't like it.

JumpGate - beta + few months retail, not enough content.

Anarachy Online - beta only, very buggy, didn't like it.

StarWars Galaxy - beta only, very buggy, didn't like it.

EVE - beta only, didn't like the whole "wait 2 days for your skills to train" deal.

Final Fantasy 11 - once again friends dragged me into playing, ended up being the only one that stuck around, played on and off for a few years. Liked the story/character development elements alot, but other than that it's just a boring grindfest.

City of Heroes - beta + 1 month retail, was rather bland.

World of Warcraft - even w/ just casual playing I blew through levels way too fast, couldn't stand raiding Molten Core & Upper Blackspire every weekend, PvP was lame, quit after a few months.

Tabula Rasa - beta only, buggy and boring.

Lord of the Rings Online - beta only, felt too WoW-like (I was biased at that point)

Age of Conan - thought about getting it but my old machine couldn't run it well, friends that played warned me to stay away.

Aion - beta only, wanted to keep playing but decided against buying it at last second, glad I did.

Warhammer Online - once again leveled up too fast, no real end game content, open RvR was just a Keep flipping zergfest.

Allods Online - few months, somehow the devs made the game worse and worse after each patch, absurd.

RIFT - pre-ordered, however I don't see myself playing more than a few months...it's the same old MMORPG w/ shinier packaging, I just want something to kill time until other stuff come out. Well to be fair, maybe the devs will do a better job tweaking/adding contents than other games this time around, but who knows for sure.

1. Ultima Online
2. Horizons beta
3. Silkroad Onilne (possibly a few other free MMORPGs as well)
4. Guild Wars

UO was the only game I've ever payed a monthly fee for and it looks like it will stay that way.

UO, EQ, Asherons Call, DAOC, Anarchy Online, WoW, SWG, EQ2, Warhammer etc (plenty of other smaller ones or ones that didn't last long).

UO will always be my favorite and most found mmo. It holds the best memories for me I was just in my 2nd year of HS at the time, still using dial up, etc.

I often dislike mmo's these days. They all follow the EQ type of "theme park" formula. It boils down to a VERY simple lcarrot chase for items. You want to get that super duper uber purple item of awesomeness, to defeat that even bigger guy for that even better uber item, rinse and repeat. Combat isn't fun, it feels more lilke work and less like entertainment/joy.

I'm just tired of it, after EQ it's felt like EVERY basic AAA mmo has been the same game, just with a different skin wrapped over it and some slight tweaks or changes here and there, but the basic "Formula" is the same over and over and over and over and over.

With UO it was NOTHING like EQ, NOTHING. The entire point of UO was to give players a sandbox world, where YOU made your own fun. There were no "quests" with npc's standing around and giant ! over their heads leading you from a specific lv range quest through the theme park design of the entire world. Where you couldn't even explore out of your "lv" zone unless you wanted to DIE and DIE quickly.

In UO it was hands down the most sociable mmo I've played period. You had players that literally would make up their own events, with plenty of community support and people showing up to such things. You even had GM ran events. Then there were the big "game" events (Ie the undead attack on Trisnic and other cities).

The world of UO felt alive, things constantly changing, it was varied. you had skills and characters from your good blue players, to red pkers, to peple who didn't care, to crafters, etc. It felt like a living breathign world you were thrust into and just have fun. The game felt like an RPG should. You had a character and YOU made the choice of what to do, how to develop them, how to play, what YOU wanted to do. The game didn't lead you by the hand telling you to do this only or that "oh you want to be evillll? can't do that here, go play another rpg!"

It's sad that literally not ONE single mmo today is comparable to UO, not even UO itself. The game was butchered and is NOTHING like it was back in 98-2000. No other AAA backed game followed the UO style of gameplay, with it's skill based, sandbox o pne world that let players do as they please and develop their own characters. Now it's just carefully designed funneled worlds of strict lv zones tethered by quest chains to drive you down a pre determined pathway to get UBER LOOT over and over, not fun.

I can't even remember the last tiem in an MMORPG aside from some early SWG days where I saw people actually being social and doing random events/having fun. It's just "lets raid, raid raid, looking for pro raiders m-s 24/7."

This sums up quite nicely why I liked UO and can't get myself to join any other monthly subscription based MMORPG. I'd like to add that other factors that bothered me (which you kind of touched on) are the user interface and leveling progression of the games.

UO has such a different UI because of it's customizability and while it was kind of weird it worked fairly well for me and I quite liked its uniqueness. Almost everyother MMORPG has at the core the same UI going all the way back to Everquest (and further if we want to count single player RPGs) and while the UI works well (it's obviously withstood the test of time) because practically every MMORPG uses this style of UI they all look essentially the same on the surface.

I also really like UO's skill progression. Rather than killing monsters for XP and then spending your earned ability points raising a skill such as smithing UO made it so that if you wanted to become better at a task you'd have to perform it. Want to be a better swordsman? Fight with a sword. Better blacksmith? Forge some weapons. Better magician? Cast some spells. Better... well you get the point.

UO truly was unique and it's quite sad that nothing compares to it and nothing probably ever will.

Dec 2004-July 2010
WoW - First and Longest MMO experience. Dec 2004 until July 2010 with many weeks/months breaks during the 6 years playing other MMO. Went cold turkey and quit in July 2010... Successfully resisted Catalysm expansion.
EVE - Stared in 2005 and second most used MMO for me. Frequently returned and quit.
Second Life - 3rd most used MMO. Was fun until the devs screwed up something and lost most of my stuff permanently.
Silkroad - Didn't last a month.
Rangrok - Didn't last a month.
City of Hero - Didn't last a week.
Warhammer Online - Couldn't get into it and gave to a friend.
Guild Wars - Only got assassin to level 10 then quit and gave to a friend.
Bunch other MMO that I cant recall.

Aug 2010- Current
EVE - Came back in Aug after finding out my friend plays this also. Been a blast ever since.
Global Agenda - Just started two weeks ago. Level 25 Recon currently. Starting to get bored/fed up. Community royally suck.. You think the bullshit in WoW is bad? Wait until you try this one.

Tibia - 2d greatness
Ragnarok Online
World of Warcraft
Aion
Age of Conan
Warhammer
Rift

Played WoW the longest to date.

I started with Dungeon and Dragons Online, sadly not much appreciated, but for me it's the best MMO ever... full character customisation, and so easy way to gimp your toon beyond redemption. Also lots of build possibilities (dual pick wielding dexterity based barb FTW :p)

Then it was Lotro, which, as I like Tolkien, couldn't draw me in. Had also part in flops like Tabula Rasa. Played a lot Age of Conan, and Pirates of the Burning Sea. That game was fun. But devs cater too much to forum mob, thus ruining balance.

There was also short adventure with Eve, but as the game offered too little RP posibilities and too little PvE, I quickly lost interest in it.

Now I'm playing WoW and I'm happy. RP server is great, I'm in nice guild, do some raiding from time to time.

Until they make good MMO based on ancient world, I'm not interested in anything else

Asheron's Call - played for a couple of years, my guild was really hooked by this one and about a dozen of us were pretty hardcore about it
World War II Online - couple of years, I think I stuck it out longer than anyone. Love the mechanics of the tanks, had some really heated battles.
Asheron's Call 2 - we all played for a few months before abandoning it and it's nerfed combat
Planetside beta - played for a couple of months somewhere back when
DAoC - I tried this but never really got hooked
Star Wars Galaxies - played about 6 months but got bored
WoW - fell in deep on this one for the first 8 months as GM while getting our guild up to 125 accounts and nearly 400 characters. Retired after I was completely burnt out on it. Miss the friends but not the game so much.
World of Tanks - I've always loved WW2 armor so this is a natural and I've played the beta (now open) for a couple of months.

Lineage II - Played for 4 months then got bored of the grind
Guild Wars - Love that game just waiting on GW2!
LOTRO - Been playing since BETA and have not looked back

The Realm. Everyquest 1, Star Wars Galaxies, Everquest 2, Vanguard, Warhammer, WoW(currently playing still).
EQ1 i put in wayyyy too much time in back in college.

Planetside and EVE.

No furries and no magic for me... If I wanted that I might as well start LARPing :p

I love games with plenty of killing.

hope to be playing planetside 2 soon.

The only other person here that I saw mention Lineage 2 lol

Asherons Call - Played on Thistledown and had a gimped sword spec (wasn't everyone gimped though? )
Asherons Call 2 - That lasted for a few months.
Anarchy Online - Got up to around a lvl160 MP before jumping to SWG. Edit: I probably had more fun in this game then most did. Yes, it was a peice of shit and probably still is, but the idea of flying in an MMO up to that point was unheard of. And my class had a spell that could make him fly.
StarWars Galaxies - We played right at release and forms a guild so we would be the first on the server to have a guild house. When we finally got one, we started setting it up and a few days later it completely disappeared. We petitioned and were basically told to get lost. I canceled the next day.
DAoC - One of the biggest grinds but also one of the funnest PvP (or RvR as it was called) I've ever played with. I had a ranger who I auto spec'd up til about level 48 and then all my friends stopped playing.
Guild Wars - Played for a few months. Wasn't in depth enough for me.
City of Heros - Fun but was pretty much like every other RPG plus I wanted to be a villian and at the time City of Villians was more of wishful thinking then reality.
WoW - Started playing to kill time while over seas. Ended up playing for a little over a year before I decided it was taking to much time to do basic upkeep to put it down for good. I still miss it though. :)

haha, funny, I was in a few clans over the years the latest being D7 for a few years until we disbanded/server xferred ohhhh a year or two ago, cant really remember. Bartz was really where it was at...I quit and came back twice, first starting in 2004 or so, wont ever go back but look back on the sieges fondly.

AC, thistledow, mostly Mayoi Great times played 5 years really early 2000 to 05 did a bunch of things, fund a bunch of bugs, made a lot of friends.

Thistledown was the best server, the only server in AC to be different then the rest PVE

Looking forward to Bliz's new MMO

I hope you can wait, its not going to be coming out until closer to 2015, and I'm not joking. Just talked to one of the lead programmers for the Titan framework and thats all it is right now, a bunch of software engineers designing the framework. Project Titan started out with no details given to the programming team other than software requirements for the framework. As far as I know no art has even been conceptualized for the game yet, its that locked up.

The blizzard campus is on lock down on a day to day basis, but the guys working on Titan is something like a team of 13 sr software engineers locked away in a unmarked, key card locked room at the end of a hall far from anyone else. Nobody at Blizz knows shit about Titan accept for a design team consisting of like 5 senior execs. The software engineers have no clue what the game is about ... outside of the fact that it IS a spin off of an existing franchise and NOT a brand new IP like previous stated. My sources are hinting at some kind of World of Diablo-like ... spin off. I have been told straight faced it is not a brand new IP and can be lead to be believed as one since its a spin off.

Blizzard time is long, Starcraft 2 was 100% playable in 2008, yet didn't release to retail for 2 years. Blizzards next MMO (Project Titan) basically hasn't even started yet, and its going to be something like 5 years before you might even see content.

Just because people are talking about doesn't mean its anywhere near done, its the complete opposite and people really should take it off of their radar. Its that far off.

WoW for about two years then it was an on and off again thing with it. Tried Age of Conan, but that didn't last two weeks. Back to WoW on and off and my sub runs out in the morning and I deleted WoW off the hdd today. Might pick up Rift when it comes out.

Confined to poking fun at WoW players, and serious consideration of taking up Guild Wars a couple of times but got confused by all the expansions it had.

Hah, same thing here. May try the new Guild Wars, just because it won't have multiple expansions and addons out the gate. ;)

On topic, I tried most MMO's. The only one I've stuck with is Eve Online. 7 years so far. It's not a massive time sync, and I just play occassionally. It's been a love/hate relationship here lately. Good thing is that I can set a long skill and take a couple months off if I like.

Casualy play eve? That's like saying "I'm a casual genius.". Nevermind the 2 years it took me to read every volume of the encyclopedia to be able to enjoy this status.

I want to play eve but the learning curve scares the shit out of me. I'll stick with wow.

I'm one of those that has sort of lost interest in the genre; just not willing to put in the time to grind for gear, ingredients, etc.

Vanguard (boring)

DAoC (best pvp MMO to date but the PvE grinding in ToA essentially killed my desire to keep playing)

WoW (MMO kindergarten)

Guild Wars (yeah, I know it's not a proper MMO)

WAR (kinda fun, better than WoW but not quite good enough to keep me playing)

There are a few that I didn't play enough to really get a sense of them

so many its shameful, ive spent about 600 bucks on just copy's of mmo's I dont want to even think about what ive paid in sub fee's. Just to name a few. Ultima online, Daoc, wow, vanguard, age of conan, eq2, ffXII, War hammer. Those are just the ones that I played for any decent amount of time, I've got a stack of "crap mmo's" sitting next to my desk.

one of the great things about eve is that you can log in once a month and still "play". Once you get the learning curve down really it just depends on your play style as to how much time you will spend in game. Most people approach eve with the wrong attitude from the start and will never learn any better though.

I'm surprised how many people here have played EQ1.

I've played a lot of MMORPG's since EQ1 and none have ever gripped my attention like that "evercrack." I spent way too much of my life on EQ1 back in the day (99-04) but I don''t regret it at all. If anything I fantasize about going back in time and doing it again.

No mmorpg has pulled me in like that. I don't know what it is. The difficulty? The lore? The overall feeling was just amazing.

I know the progression servers just opened up but it'll never be the same.

I miss it.

lol i probably would've play EQ longer (lasted a little over a year from launch) if their GM "service" with a corpse disappearing bug didn't make me ragequit.

me: umm my corpse is gone along with all my stuff, I died only like a couple of days ago.
them: hmm can't help you, how about a pack of newbie shit.

I've never pay for a SOE product since, did try Planetside when it had that free to play model.

Going to show my age here.

Played The Shadow of Yserbius(sp) until they shut it down. Loved this game.

Played Meridian 59 like 3 months or so. I heard about it late.

UO for a couple years. This got me addicted to MMO's

EQ for a few years. I must have played this game 10 hours a day for years. Vex Thal...still have bad dreams.

AO a couple years. Why no one has really copied the implant system is beyond me. It was awesome.

FFXI a year or so. I did like how the toughness of the game made a decent community. You KNEW who the good Americans were.

WoW. My biggest MMO moments. I ran a top 5 guild for a a year or so, but got burned out. Played semi hardcore there after.

Rift will be next.

I think it's a combination of the difficulty and lore/setting. EQ had it's own lore, it's own races, unique setting, etc. It made it a very memorable game.

Now every "fantasy" mmorpg has your generic humans, orcs, elves, etc.

Played quite a bit of MUDs in the early days, never embarked on MMOs, probably never will. The time required seems unreasonable.
