Big rumors going around today that AMD is in talks for a buyout, what do you all think?

As a shareholder, I am worried at these rumors flying around. However I have not come across a single link talking about it yet as it is mostly internet gossip. If AMD is bought out by the right company, it wouldn't be bad for us stockholders since I have severe doubts whether AMD will be able to survive on their own as the markets continue to become more competitive.

Here is the only link i've found so far that talks about this

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-...nt-upheaval-makes-it-a-target.html?cmpid=yhoo

I'm not sure how the market is responding to the rumors since AMD is up 4.5% today, but tech stocks in general are doing well today.

Might not be bad. They've been in last place for way too long. New management might do the trick

Dell could never buy AMD. Intel wouldn't stand for it and the government wouldn't allow it. Dell would have direct control over processes it's competition uses. It's huge lawsuits just waiting to happen.

Maybe 20 yrs ago, but in this day, big business rules the roost. Dell could easily buy AMD if they had the finances to do so.

Considering that AMD is relatively a bargain, I think that question if more along the lines of when and not if they will be bought out. Analysts believe that AMD could be purchased for as little as $4-6 billion, which is easily affordable by your big corporations. I would assume that Dell could easily buy AMD, but i'm not sure why it would be in their interest to do so.

ATIC? It's a shame if this buyout were to happen right on the blooming of Bobcat, Llano and Bulldozer which should all be arriving in the next 3-6 months.

Thinking whether I should sell and then buy when price crashes back down. Then I thought: whatever, I'm in it for the long haul anyways.

How come cable companies are allowed to buy TV networks? seems like conflict of interest doesn't matter these days if you grease the right palms.

Man I hope this is bullshit, I really do. AMD Processors may not be Intel "WTF is the socket this week" super mofo's but they do the job well at a fraction of the cost and they don't change sockets at a drop of a hat. Dell takes them over , they'll bring back that kid that went "Dude You got a Dell!' dope smoking and all and all and AMD/ATI will be ran into the ground. But I guess if it is meant to be it is meant to be. :( (minus the melodramatics;) )

MS should just buy amd, they already use ati tech for xbox. Might as well get it all.

I can agree to that. AMD has been behind for so long maybe someone New came come in and do what is needed for the company cause right now its not working

Wasn't there a clause in the AMD-intel x86 cross licensing agreement that said the x86 license would not be transferable if a company bought AMD?

Weeks? More like years. It's really too bad. What happened to their innovation?

The issue would be Intel trying to enforce that clause. Regulators wouldn't be likely to let them do it. I have no doubt Intel try it, but I don't see it holding up if AMD is bought out. Don't forget that the old agreement said that AMD would lose the license if they didn't manufacture their own chips, but nothing came of it when GlobalFoundries was spun off.

I can see how having processor and chipset production being done 'in house' would be a big advantage to a huge PC maker like Dell. In any case I want to see competition continue. Dell buying AMD would ensure AMD's survival going forward for quite some time. Of course they then also own what was ATI. Who knows what that would do.

People who make money from having money (investors/stockholders/shareholders) are parasitic by nature.

You dilute economic value for everyone else by creating new money from "thin air" and help increase inflation, and all because you wanna make a little money for nothing :(

W...T...F

Seriously? ah shiz. Even as an Intel fan I have big soft spot of AMD so i wish them the best on whatever happens. Bit of a shock though, i thought they were holding pretty steady and doing fine. What are the reasons for a buyout?

all depends on what you consider behind.. for the market AMD is in they are way ahead of intel. sure intel has the better processors at the top end of the market. but with those processors you pay the price premium for them, along with that you sit there wondering if there will be a new socket in 6-8 months now. AMD owns the low end market and that is where the volume sales are which is far more important in the long term. also the fact that AMD continues to create backwards/forward compatible motherboards when they release a new socket type is a much better deal in the OEM market since that means they are having to spend less money to keep up with the changes. so in the end means less cost and more profit.

the bigger issue here is that AMD needs to severely think about their marketing. they have been sitting on the back burner for far to long while Intel spends billions marketing their brand on tv with commercials and various other things, AMD doesn't do any of this. i mean shit outside of the internet and review sites the only marketing you really see is an AMD logo on a few race cars in F1, WRC and a few other racing leagues that only get shown on the Speed channel at 3 in the morning in the US. I don't think i've ever seen AMD as a major sponsor in say Nascar. where as Intel has and thats a huge friggin market they are missing in the US. and no them being a sponsor in IRL/indycar doesn't count since you can even read the logo's on those car's for it to even matter.

I would think that any company with a spare couple of billion would be able to buy AMD except for Intel and Nvidia.
