Steam 2010 Revenue Nearly $1 Billion

The reason Steam continues to separate itself from the rest of the online distribution world is how friendly they are to the way YOU want to play your games. I have been a happier gamer since building my Steam library.

I can uninstall any games I'm not currently playing.

I can reinstall them four years later (and I have, all the time) to play it again for a while.

I can uninstall it again.

They don't care! I love them for this. They hold the games for my use longer than I can keep track of the physical media. And having them never complain about bandwidth as I install/uninstall or put limits on it... is why I keep buying. I hope they never EVER change this. It's just the way online distribution should be. Thank you Valve/Steam.

Don't forget, you can go to your buddy's house. Log in with your steam account and play your games on his computer!

I'll tell you what I told my 11 year old.. "use the google" He had his running 15 minutes later.
I have it running in vista 32, win 7 64 and even in wine-bottler on osx. Juicy chicken flesh.

Ya, too bad it doesn't seem to like Nvidia whatsoever. All my boxes happen to use Nvidia gpus, cept my laptops. On my laptops, the game plays, but randomly crashes.

But hey, you can just tell your 11 year old to suck it.

Given how long its been since its release and the fact they where giving it away free for months thats a huge ammount earned by Portal.

I bet consoles due... but Steam only represents a small fraction of PC Game sales.

In this day in age with Brick & Mortar stores dropping like the dodo bird & GameStop being the biggest video game based distributor in North America that hardly sales any PC games, I highly doubt that is true at this point. I can walk into a Best Buy & seeing newly released games sitting in the PC section but those same games be sold out on the Xbox 360/PS3. I do favor PC gaming but it is getting its ass handed to it sales wise to console gaming. Outside of the MMO/RTS genre. I am quite certain that Steam makes of a huge portion of PC gaming sales these days.

^ There are quite a few companies doing well with digital distribution right now. Steam may be the biggest one, but it hardly represents overall PC game sales. I also use D2D, GamersGate and GOG for games fairly often.

Except that Steam isn't the only digital distributor. Steam, Direct2Drive, Game Streamer, Good Old Games, etc. Even the developers have their own digital distribution. Toss in your online retailers also, like Amazon, Newegg, etc.

I'll be going back to retail purchases via Newegg and Amazon for the next 6 months. I also still purchase from B&M stores, as I don't feel like wasting what little bandwith I have on game downloads.

WTF, it says I posted from a mobile device. Guess my like 50 lbs computer is now a mobile device.

I know many people love Steam and that's fine for you, but the dislike I have for Steam is the inability to resell or get rid of the titles I PURCHASED. If the game is crap, as was the case with Civilization V, I wanted to flog it out the window. Instead, I am stuck receiving junk mail from Steam and 2KGames on how an upgrade to a game I now hate is available for me.

Since I could not have the title removed from my account, I went through a week long ping-pong E-mail match with Valve Support to have my account outright deleted. They told me they could not delete accounts, which is against both their EULA and California State Law, so one E-mail from their Legal Department ended the whole E-mail trail with a "Your Account has been deleted along with all records in Valve's Database".

I'll take my business elsewhere because of it too.

You got spam mail from Steam and 2K? How/why? I own Civ5 and they never bother me with ANY mail.

Not sure how you get junk email from Steam. I don't get any at all. I also don't opt in for emails from any of the multiplayer games I have to register for.

I had pre-ordered the game directly from 2KGames/Firaxis, whom in turn signed me up automatically for messages from 2KGames / Steam on any updates to either the Civ5 Steam Page, Newly available DLC, OR updates from 2KGames. I never had any of that junk turned on from within Steam Options.

I had responded to the mail following the directions at the bottom asking to unsubscribe, but it always redirected to an "HTTP Error 500 Internal server error" page. Drove me nuts that ultimately blacklisted the dom's from my client and mailhost.

So essentially, you were signed up via 2KGames for junk email and no one else.

Steam doesn't send emails to notify you of any updates. Hell, it doesn't even notify me that it's updating any of my games at all. It just does it and I don't notice until I look under my games list.

So essentially you're pissed at Steam that 2KGames was sending you e-mails. And you got so enraged you went and had your whole Steam account deleted, which had nothing to do with the situation, and lost access to any/all games you had on there previously?

Yeah, that sounds like Steam has issues all right...

I wonder what percentage of that 1 billion came from [H] Steam sale threads. =)

Steam is just the middle man......and more.....but you get the picture.....they supply the game.

The revenue is merely gross income, it would be interesting to see what the net profit was/is.

Still nice to see a company doing well, supplying a good service; that and the strength of PC gaming.

But hey.....what I really want is.... Half-Life 2 Episode 3, dammit.

Maybe they are using a new engine?

i can't believe how the world eats up Call of Doodoo.

they can put out the worst shit, and it will sell millions.

Every 6 months or so there is a pc gaming article is dying. In fact we are due for one any day now.

I could have swore there was one early in the month of January about how PC's are dead & the time of Tablets is now.

This will always be the case there is more of them than us.

Using a computer in general and playing PC games does require a certain level of skill.

While any jackass can pickup a controller and start playing.

Its like Best buy shoppers vs People that visit this forum.

Thanks for quoting crap that you didn't even read. Here, let me quote a small part of your link.

"Individual information" is information about a user that is presented in a form distinguishable from information relating to other users but not in a form that personally identifies any user or enables the recipient to communicate directly with any user unless agreed to by the user in advance of such communication.

Let me break that down for you, since you seem to have bad reading comprehension.

STEAM WILL NOT GIVE OUT YOUR EMAIL, WITHOUT YOUR EXPRESSED CONSENT.

If you read everything I wrote, you'd understand that I had it deleted on multiple principles:
1) You do NOT own ANY game you buy on steam. It is a lease of use. I just am not comfortable with that.
2) Your information is, not may, is shared with affiliates. The word "may" in legalese terms is there to soften the implication that they can do what ever they want to.
3) I had a personal issue with the "affiliate" 2kGames, which was linked to Valve. So while my initial condition may have been directed solely at 2kGames, it resulted in a guilt by association paradox.

RIAA and the MPAA should model after Steam. :D

To bad they are to damn stupid to figure it out.

Actually, I read it and went over it thoroughly, you just seem to be taking it out of context or misunderstanding the statement.

I actually agree to this 100%. There are check boxes in the steam options to both opt-in and opt-out of. My issue however was regarding an affiliate that used Steam as a reference point to relay information to me. Something Valve obviously does not have control over.

However, everything was tied through the steam account and instead of trying to beat a lame programmer for poor coding, I just ended it entirely. So, 2kGames + discomfort in the feeling of not owning said steam driven games lead to the closure of the account Nothing more.

1. Have you read the EULA of any PC game? You do not buy any game, you are buying a license to use the game.
2. They do not give out any of your personal identifiable information. As in name, email address, phone numbers, addresses, etc. They will give out other information, like..."we have this random user who plays FPS games 4-5 hours a week online" or maybe computer specs.
3. So you're telling us you have horrible assumptions.

1. Have you read the EULA of any PC game? You do not buy any game, you are buying a license to use the game.
Not true. If that were so, you couldn't sell it to GameStop or similar. Which is WHY publishers like Steam, it circumvents the costly loss of sales to resales events at places such as GameStop. It's a nice model actually, but some people like to be able to flogg their bad titles, as I do.

They will give Age, Gender, Geographical region, etc. to public, yes. However, I am not contesting the sharing of personal information dude. Stop with that.

Dude! I know you're not 12, so why are you trying to insult me for having a different viewpoint than you which is no less true or flase than your own viewpoint? ALL I am saying is I don't like Steam! Big whoop! That means I assume? *sigh*

It's still true. The problem with EULA is that it's not actually legally binding, even though they keep pushing it. First-Sale Doctrine.

Also you can sell Steam games. You just have to sell the whole account. If you wanted to, you could have sold your Civ 5. Just make sure to wipe all your Steam info. Next time, just make up a bunch of random info.

Hating Steam, whatever that's up to you. The thing is, you came in here saying stuff that's completely wrong and used that as a basis for hating Steam. So yes, that means you assumed.

"assumption is a proposition that is taken for granted, as if it were true based upon presupposition without preponderance of the facts."

I hate Steam myself. I hated it when it came out, I still hate it. The only thing I've liked about Steam is that I can get a game the day it releases. Was a big deal when I lived overseas, but now that I'm back in the states. Not that big a deal.

That's a lack of legislation more than anything imo. Technology just seems beyond the comprehension of our policy makers.

See, I was hoping to do that, but then I read this from the agreement:

STEAM® SUBSCRIBER AGREEMENT

You may not sell or charge others for the right to use your Account, or otherwise transfer your Account.

Well, I apologize if it came across that way and perhaps I did make some assumptions, but I only had the facts I did in order to unbind myself from the situation I was presented with.

Which is one of the reasons that makes it wildly popular for the masses. Don't get me wrong, Steam has some cool features, but it just seems like smoke and mirrors to me. I am an oldskool gamer who hates to see common rights like these get yanked over the reason of "piracy" or "ease of distribution". I'd rather spend the time to drive somewhere a buy a title I at least feel I have the same tangible rights to like a book and the same spam-free anonymity as paying cash for something.

Valve seems to track who's using the account and from where, but I think they've become lax with that. I remember my account getting locked down and I had to go through hoops and ladders to get it back. All because I accessed my account from like 5 different countries within a year.

Course I already shared my account with someone else and I used theirs. I bought Medal of Honor and he had CoD: Black Ops. So we swapped for a week. Maybe they just don't care as much anymore.

As for going to a B&M doesn't really work for me, unless you like getting a game in a different language or censored. That or waiting 2-4 weeks for it to show up at a B&M. Faster to order it through Amazon, Gamestop, or something. That still takes a couple weeks.

Soon, I'll have to wait up to a month to get a game. Kind of hard to get mail in a combat zone. After that, I'll probably get a nice civilian job in Japan or S.Korea. Steam will make it easy for me to get my game on, without buying it in Japanese, Chinese, or Korean.

How is it not that console gaming is dieing? I just built my first HTPC that will smoke an XBOX 360 with a tri core and 5550 for less than a 360 costs, and I can use the same controller, but don't have to pay any monthly fees to play online :confused::confused:

He got it running on a 8800gts go laptop and a 8600gt initially but that ones a 5 series amd now. I believe he did have to modify the configuration after card swap. I think I'll hold back on telling him to suck it. Maybe you're just oft?

Greetings!

Estimatives?

Considering that Portal was offered free for two weeks I highly suspect those numbers. Probably also mis-calculating the promotions prices.
My guess is that they just multiplied an estimative of the number of games by the usual price.

As for CoD BO numbers, the game made $1B in 2010.

Ya and I bet he has the exact same problems as everyone else. It randomly crashes. It's not hard to make the game run, it's hard to make sure it stays running.

console revenues a prob 3x times this. Didn't 1 on the cod on consoles made
over a billion itself.

Perhaps, but Steam is just one source of PC games. There's Gamestop and Walmart and developer's own web sites and many other sources. So perhaps PC games and consoles are on equal or near-equal footing.

No, the middle man used to be the publisher, who would sell it to stores. With DDS systems, there is no publisher, Steam is the end man. Developer makes game, Steam sells it. All middle men cut out, more profit for developer, more profit for Steam, which also equates to better deals for the consumer.

Isn't Steam own by Valve who makes HalfLife anyways?

One BILLION dollars!

i used to hate steam as much as the next person when it was forced upon for counter strike source and HL2. Now i love steam due to the deals and not worrrying where my discs are at when i lose them since its all on my account.
It's also nice nice to see the growing collection of video games and the neverending backlog of games. At least i will never get bored.
