Intel Chipset Design Error!!!

I'm wondering how this number was arrived at though. Does it include the fact that most people are not going to need to use the 4 3gb/s SATA ports? This would mean the failure rate for those that do require them would be much higher.

Wanted to upgrade since my current system is quite slow relatively, however buying now could result in a long turn around for RMA and shipping costs (compounded with the fact I'm not in the US).

One would assume the failure rate would be for a port that's actually used. I got the impression that heavily used ports had a higher chance of failing than those that were used little.

The safer bet may be a dissassemble and return to the vendor as we have more choices (Z68, Different Revisions, Different Model, and etc).
This is apparently not an option if you bought your motherboard from Microcenter like I did. Their return policy says they won't accept returns, only exchanges for motherboards.

I have no idea how they would handle it since they don't have any good boards to give in exchange though.

Just push the fact that you have it in writing that a part on it is defective and they can't provide you with another p67 that isn't the same condition?

Wtf are you guys talking about???

christ they havent pulled anything. STFU with the sky is falling shit already

before you tell someone to STFU you might want to dig a little deeper into that skull of yours and realise that yes 6 series items are pulled and listed as deactivated earlier today as noted several times in this thread. Do you see any Intel, Gigabyte, Foxconn boards listed?

Here is a list of all of Newegg's Intel braded boards, do you see any 6 series chipsets here?

Pioneers get the arrows.....

Glad I stuck with a 1156 socket cpu/board for the system I upgraded last week.
An i3 overclocked to 3.7Ghz (on the stock cooler) on a cheap 1156 board was within 10% on most benchmarks of a lowend 1155 board/i5 cpu, but almost $100 cheaper.

Hmm my Asrock Extreme6 is running great- no problems since day one but this recall does worry me and I just got done chatting with newegg. They said that an e-mail should be sent out within 48 hours with more details and options for people that purchased a Sandy Bridge CPU/MOBO and are still within refund period.

4:53:33 PM : Darlene: We are awaiting feedback from Intel on the matter you have brought to our attention. Rest assured Newegg remains committed to your complete satisfaction. We will be in touch shortly to discuss the next steps and how we may best assist you.

Seems promising!

What are you blind to the world. They completely TOOK OFF the Sandy Bridge CPUs & damn near every board. I mean Completely you cant even find the CPUs on there anymore. So before you decide to be a little punk and try to make a statement you need to FIRST open your eyes and look. I will STFU when you prove your point

For $700,000,000 wouldn't it be cheaper and easier for Intel to just ship one of these to every affected motherboard owner? I realize it's not the same (takes up space, PCI-Express x4 lane, etc.) but it might be a simpler option. Hell they could probably spend $50 mil of that on developing a cheaper, smaller product that they could sell as a new entry level card.

If I buy a motherboard with specific specifications, I want them to work. I don't want an add-on card. Some folks wouldn't even have a free slot for that.

Stop being a douche if you don't really know what you're taking about. They pulled dozens of models; ASUS, MSI, and Gigabyte had at least half a dozen models EACH. It looks like they simply missed three out of like 35+, and all of ASRock's stuff.

This IS a serious recall, but so far it's been handled relatively well... We'll see how smooth the exchange process is and if they manage to stick to their timetable. Stuff like this happens people, early adopters should know it better than anyone. In the end, what really matters is how it's handled.

So far so good, but we'll see. Optimistically I'm hoping for a Z68 upgrade option even if I pay the difference. Realistically I just want a hassle free replacement in April, for a new product, without having to pay any shipping charges etc.

As soon as I get home I'm placing my data drives on the SATAIII ports, but there is not much I can do about the two optical drives or the two OS drives.

Foo...don't really see another way around it.

One of my disks is gone, followed by the error!

Just wanna say, as a late consumer (due too budget), I wanna say THANKS to all the early addopters for beta testing my products!

When you live on the cutting edge, bring band-aids...

Am I reading it right in that it affect the P67 INTEL motherboards? So the asus, giga, msi etc are not affected? We are talking the SATA connector or the sata path to the chipset, not the chipset itself really from what i read on anadtech.

p.s. wonder what the asus reps who frequent this board will say. Haven't heard from them yet... how odd.

Just spoke with Microcenter customer service, they are aware of the pull from the website and said if you are within the exchange window timeframe you may refund as they do not have a replacement board for you. From the live customer chat line just now.

The 6 series CHIPSET has the flaw and it has the potental to affect ALL boards that use that chipset regardless of the manufacturer

C|Net has posted an article today on the fallout of Intel's Sandy Bridge chipset flaw. The article basically sums up what we know about the flaw so far and who is affected.

Bottom line: if you are a consumer who's run out and grabbed a high-end laptop or desktop gaming rig in the last few weeks with an Intel quad-core processor billed as Intel's Second Generation Intel Core Processor, then you potentially have a problem.

Agreed.

Yay for being an early adopter.

You know I wish i'd listen to my gut instinct more often. telling me not so upgrade from a 775 system until SB has been out a while. but no i go with the hype and this happens.

This is becoming more and more these days. not just hardware, i mean look at black ops, went with the hype pre-ordered and it was s***. plagued with problems. Oh well all this has taught me a lesson.

I'm returning the whole shebang until this is all figured out. Newegg gave me a full refund on my 2600K and I'm RMAing my MSI board. Also have to refuse shipment on another board. PITA!!!!

For those who have motherboards with 2x Marvell SATA3 on them this is just an FYI.
The HighPoint 26X boards go for as little as $25 and have two ports based on the same M91XX Marvell chip.

I just put one in my Asus Sabertooth P67 and didn't even need to install drivers for it.
So now I have six internal SATA3 position (2x Intel and 2x Marvel on-board and 2x Marvel PCI-E x1). I suppose I send my receipt to Intel for my $25 back :)

I'm not okay with Intel's screw up, but I sure am not handing my hardware back to Newegg any time soon. I just went from a Q9550 @ 3.6 GHz and a 5870 to a 2600k @ 4.4 GHz and 2x 6970 and I don't see going back anytime soon. Hopefully Intel and Asus will do the right thing and ship replacements to loyal customers and then wait for the old board to come back. Not likely I know.

Personally I think a trade in for a Z68 should be offered. Even if it involves paying a little I'd rather have it replaced with that. Either way I better be hearing about my board being recalled on their behalf.

LOL, Motorola Xoom. Seriously?
iPad owns the market and above all, developers and the media have fully committed to it.

Like how the iPhone owns the marke.... oh wait, Blackberry beat iPhone again and Android is currently the leader.

Once the novelty wears off, people go to the best thing overall: CHOICES.

Too bad the Asus U3S6 SATA III + USB3.0 PCIe 4x card isn't available anywhere anymore.

fitting my corsair h50 cooler was a mission in itself. i really can't be arsed to remove the motherboard :(

Anyone else here have any of the Gigabyte boards? All I see everyone mentioning are the Asus boards.

I don't get labeling someone as a drama queen if they specifically purchased the board because it has 8 ports, and then they use all 8 ports on the motherboard, only to be told now that half of the ports will slowly die over time...

If failure rates are as high as 15% how is this not something to be alarmed over if you use the affected ports?

I love Intel. I love Sandy Bridge. But do you know what I love more? Greedy, dirty, and rough... competition. GOOOO AMD. Bring down my intel prices moar :p
