"As part of ongoing quality assurance, Intel Corporation has discovered a design issue in a recently released support chip, the Intel® 6 Series, code-named Cougar Point, and has implemented a silicon fix.

....

the Serial-ATA (SATA) ports within the chipsets may degrade over time, potentially impacting the performance or functionality of SATA-linked devices such as hard disk drives and DVD-drives. The chipset is utilized in PCs with Intel’s latest Second Generation Intel Core processors, code-named Sandy Bridge. Intel has stopped shipment of the affected support chip from its factories. Intel has corrected the design issue, and has begun manufacturing a new version of the support chip which will resolve the issue.

"

No wonder...

The company expects to begin delivering the updated version of the chipset to customers in late February and expects full volume recovery in April. Intel stands behind its products and is committed to product quality. For computer makers and other Intel customers that have bought potentially affected chipsets or systems, Intel will work with its OEM partners to accept the return of the affected chipsets, and plans to support modifications or replacements needed on motherboards or systems. The systems with the affected support chips have only been shipping since January 9th and the company believes that relatively few consumers are impacted by this issue.

RMA time?

I doubt companies will accept the boards back unless you can show them you have an error...

Ah crap. Wouldn't you know. I always expect bios issues with new boards, but know that can be corrected. But this......knowing that at SOME time your board WILL fail is a bit disheartening. I just got my new P8P67 stable....so this will affect all manufacturers, so what should we do? Wait until the fixed ASUS boards are out there and RMA to save our investment??

Yeah, ASUS had better RMA my board. That, or pay $300 to replace my SSD and hard drives

I wonder if this is why EVGA has not brought a board to market yet...

Wondering if I should sent my ASROCK board back now before shit hits the fan..

Wouldn't using the Marvell controller on Asus' boards circumvent the problem, though?

Basically, they knew about this, and still sold the boards? Cannot tell me, with that much time before SB launch, they somehow didn't know about this.

I had to disable my Marvell controller just to get this board stable and fix the double/triple post problem. Guess I'll plug into it now and just deal with the boot/reset/boot/reset/boot/reset. Better than borking my SSD.

I figured with all of the time they've been working on these that this stuff would have been worked out. I guess I figured wrong. think I just postponed my rig update again.

Just got my P8P67 last night and went to install Windows and cannot get the Windows installer to successfully partition/format any of my drives. Could this be related to that?

Yes i loaded the proper drivers :)

Did they even test the Sandy Bridge cpu's on new the boards? Seems like they didn't because every single board has issues.

I have no issues at all, except when I shut the computer down it restarts instead, then the second time it shuts down..

intel is setting aside $700 million to fix - that should cover repalcing all MBs out there.

:" implemented a silicon fix. In some cases, the Serial-ATA (SATA) ports within the chipsets may degrade over time, potentially impacting the performance or functionality of SATA-linked devices such as hard disk drives and DVD-drives".

No way they want future problems out there - better to fix it now.

well it looks like I will be holding off for a few months longer on my upgrade

I especially like this part of the press release ...

"Intel believes that consumers can continue to use their systems with confidence, while working with their computer manufacturer for a permanent solution."

Hmm, how about "No I can't."

Yep, like always. The first few monthboards are always crap.
I'm in the same boat and probably will return my new board. Will ASUS send new boards to everyone in March?

Tick Tock strategy back firing? (by rushing to the market?). This is a Tock phase isn't it? Problems like this should not be happening.

First time early adopter and I get this crap.

Does this affect every mobo out there? Has anyone noticed any degradation with their SATA ports?

I only use on HDD and one DVD drive, don't if it matters.

And how early does this degradation set in? Can't believe I'm gonna have to RMA the damn thing (Asus P8P67 EVO), after having to wait for almost a month to get my SB rig.

And I read somewhere that new boards will only be available in April?

Crap, I just got my computer to where I like it and it is running great. Now I have to decided if I want to take it apart just to RMA my P8P67 Deluxe. I'm not having any issues with my 300GB Velociraptor or my BD-ROM, and those are the only two SATA devices that I am running.

Are the any more details regarding the issue?

ASUS stopped shipping the M4E for a reason and other boards going OOS, I knew something major was happening.

I'll wait until LGA 2011 is released now and wait a few months after that for those boards to weed out the issues.

Well, if ASUS won't send me the new MB, then I am just gonna dump it my self and I'll get the Intel one. No way I am living with a flawed product.

My Asus P8P67 Pro already died and is waiting for an RMA number, now this?

If ++++.com in Canada will accept a return (arrived last week), I'm going to send back the mobo, 2500K and 8 gigs of ram, I'm so sick of dealing with Sandybridge.

yea im very tempted to just dump everything right now even though my rig is running fine. This really sucks.

"The systems with the affected support chips have only been shipping since January 9th"

So for those of us who bought it during launch day or first couple days, I don't think there's a need to worry?

newegg is still selling p67 mobos, so maybe they havent got the memo yet. lol
are we expecting to see all p67 mobos removed from distributor websites?

Ok here's the deal.

I just bought my board from Newegg and I've have yet to use it but that doesn't matter in this case. Intel will reinburse companies like Newegg for this issue so they shouldn't feel the heat from this. I was granted a full refund and paid shipping back to Newegg for the issue.

I'm going back to LGA 1366 for now.

So if you have a problem, INtel will work with board partners to replace it.

That's nice, but what they should be doing is recalling all of that chip revision, no questions asked.

So, moving forward, how can I look at a board and tell which revision of the silicon it has in order to avoid buying one of these?

No sense RMAing right now anyways, since the fixed ones won't be shipping till end of Feb.
