Is there a better 32" LCD-TV than the Sony 32EX400?

The LG left a white streak behind my finger when I moved it against the screen - indicating it was a MA panel. The Panasonic left no streak behind my finger when I moved it against the screen indicating IPS panel. This moniter leaves a dark streak behind my finger when I move it???? -- What kind of panel is that? Off angle viewing on the toshiba is 100% acceptable.
With that dark streak I'd guess another VA variant, FYI Toshiba in the past has used Sharp, Samsung and LG panels. You could try taking some macro shots of the pixel structure and compare them to other pictures online, or google search your TV model number to see if anyone else has done it.

I played some far cry 2. I cannot notice any lag on this monitor. I don't have the tools to do a proper lag test, but subjectively I can't feel any and I DID feel some on the LG 32LE5300. This feels a bit smoother than the panasonic too, but I couldn't really perceive any lag on th panasonic either. I do feel this is a bit more accurate in FPS games than the panasonic some how or another. The panasonic in far cry 2 -- it seemed that I was never really able to easily shoot someone at a distance scoped in. I was either to the left or the right. On this toshiba monitor it's spot accurate and I was surprised how easily I was shooing the foes. Nothing else changed so I don't have any explanation for this. No different drivers, no different hardware -- nothing. I just feel my mouse is a bit more accurate on this Toshiba in game mode than it is on the 37u22 panasonic, however I wasn't really able to perceive lag on the panasonic either. This is by far my favorite of the three so far.
Clean headshots are another good sign, especially since you couldn't pull them off on your older displays.

Looks like the Panny U22 hit your threshold for input lag, which makes sense to me because everything i've read says that some people begin noticing the "signs" of input lag starting from 2 frames and up.

I will say that the bluray movies on this toshiba 32e200u are not quite as spectacular as the LG and Panasonic. (just watched some avatar)

It looks good, just not quite as good. I guess you win some and you loose some. It is still by far the best for PC monitor use and as that is my primary purchase intent - it fits my bill.
You might be able tweak the picture settings on that individual hdmi input to your liking, i'm guessing Blu-ray/Blu-ray players want different settings than PC's ?

Other than that it sounds like you have a winner, and it only costed you $350 :)
 
I have the LG 32LD450. By default the display will be blurry and the input lag greater. There is an easy way to fix it and that is to override the EDID. The best way that I know of is to create a custom monitor INF file and install it. This will most likely work for some other HDTV that has blurry text/display in Windows. You can copy and paste the following into Notepad and rename it to have an .inf extention. After that, just install to overwrite your current monitor driver. You can change the Provider, DriverVer, MFG, DISC, PRODUCTID, and VENDOR to whatever you want.

AVSforumites rate the LG 32LD450 pretty highly as a pc monitor. There was a user there that did input lag tests and it rated as one of the best along with the 32EX400. I use it as a gaming tv and going from my old 5 year old 720p Westinghouse to this tv was a revelation. Much better colors and no noticeable input lag. The only issue I have are with the blacks as its not that good, probably on the level of my TN-film panel Samsung monitor.

I agree, I bought and returned three different HDTVs before I settled on the LG 32LD450. I was going to return this one too until I found the EDID fix that I posted above. Text is very sharp, blacks are black, and the colors are far far better than any TN monitor I had before. Not only that, but the input lag is very very minimal. I don't notice any lag.

I was thinking about trying one myself.... I would be coming from 20WMGX2 IPS panel, so I'm aware of most IPS panel shortcomings, however I find more pros than cons. In the past I've tried PVA/MVA and I just coudn't stand color shiffting.... I'm sure these panels evolve since than, but I think I would still prefer IPS panel based monitor.

Is the 32" hard on your eyes and what is recommended sitting distance....???

I have the EX400. While the text is not razor sharp, it's still very easy to read. It's not noticeably blurry.

Where the TV really shines is black levels. Phenomenal blacks for an LCD.

After you install the INF file you should reboot. Either that, or switch from a lower res and then back to 1920x1080.

I'm connected to the TV from one of my GTX 580s using HDMI. VGA is not ideal for use with this HDTV. The display will be blurry with VGA.

It's very important that you rename the HDMI input to PC. Just go into the Input menu and press the blue button on the remote to rename the HDMI connection to PC.

I use my own settings. These settings are only applicable for an HDMI connection.

Here is what I'm using under Picture settings:
Energy Saving: Off
Picture Mode: Expert 1
Backlight: 100
Contrast: 100
Brightness: 48
H Sharpness: 46
V Sharpness: 46
Color: 62
Tint: 50 (right in the middle)

You may need to tweak some setting like the two sharpness settings depending on the video card used. I've spent considerable time tweaking it to get it the way I like it. Let me know how that looks for you. May look a little bright at first. You can either decrease contrast or the backlight.

First off, thanks for posting the INF file for the EDID override fix. Do you mind if I post this over in the official xxLD450 thread on avsforum?

As for the quoted part... picture quality is completely subjective, but I have to disagree with this. Assuming you have 4:4:4 chroma being displayed properly, the "PC" setting does more harm than good. The reason being is the PC label forces the Edge Enhancer to High, which will marginally make text sharper, but you sacrifice edge detail and halo'ing effects become more pronounced. You're probably not seeing the halo'ing effects since your backlight/contrast settings are maxed out.

For recommended picture settings, try out the settings in the official xxLD450 faq on avsforums (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=19723268#post19723268). They're more catered in producing a "purer" image without relying on artificial post processing effects.

The larger Sanyos at Super W were using S-PVA and S-IPS panels.

The Vizio E370VL, E420VL (120Hz), and E470VL(120Hz) were using S-IPS panels.

The S-IPS panels were definitely LG S-IPS panels. I think comparing with the Samung 55C630, that the other 2 there wre S-PVA panels...but not totally sure.

The smaller Sanyos were using LG H-IPS panels.

Anyways, I think that the larger 1080p Sanyo's are better than the Funai family of brand names (Philips, Magnavox, Sylvania and Emerson), and RCA as well. Although I would probably go with Vizio E-VL line over them....because of their superior warranty performance and more established history (though Sanyo branded Plasmas have been around a good while and sold through Super W). The video processing and electronics quality surrounding the panel in the Sanyo are also still a mystery, but it looks like they are putting good panels in there larger offerings.


The LG 55LD520 seemed to be using an S-PVA panel as well. Though the 47" and 42" LD450s were both LG S-IPS panels.

There also seems to be a 47' set with Internet Apps, the Sanyo DP47460 120Hz. This probably uses an LG S-IPS panel, I would hazard a guess.

But the Ive read complaints about the Internet Apps functionality.
I figured most of you would be interested, especially the guinea pig/trailblazing types.

Sanyo is now a subdivision of Panasonic btw.
 
from my experience with the LG and Panasonic - absolutely! The toshiba is the superior model hands down for use as a PC monitor --- simply cause text can be soo good! Black levels are good, colors are good, and text is nearly as good as a monitor. Close enough that it doesn't bother me and I am picky!

So I discovered the Toshiba doesn't do 4:4:4 very well. Red text on black background is a bit fuzzy, unless you crank the sharpness way up and then the other text looks crappy! Not a deal breaker for me because the only way I've ever even saw red text on blackbackground was in a forum describing 4:4:4 failure. I'm happy with this Toshiba 32E200U TV as a monitor, but might keep my eye out for a cheap LG 32LD450 to compare. I do much prefer this toshiba to the LG 32LE5300 and the Panasonic 37u22 TV as far as PC monitor use though. I've played about 10 hours of games on it at 1080p from my PC and it works fantastic - no noticable input lag, and good sharp graphics. I still think text is 90-95% perfect on the toshiba 32E200U (outside of black background and red text) Everything at Hardforum looks good though.

You say this will work on any HDTV? Would it be okay to try on my Toshiba 32e200u? I don't know much about this type of driver modification/creation.

Just wondering if you tried the EDID edit. I'm thinking about getting a toshiba in the next week or two (quite a few sales are starting because of the Super Bowl).

For those of you with 32 inch screens...do any of you wish you had gone with a larger, 37 or 40 inch screen? With regular TVs it's usually "bigger is better" but I wonder if that still applies when the TV is used as a monitor.
 
i have a large desk and can put the 37" panasonic I had back near about a 3 foot away viewing distance. 37" was too big for fps games. I got motion sickness on it and I've never got motion sickness before. Mind you I play my xbox games on a 100" projector screen from a couch 8 foot away. 32" does't give me that same feeling. 37" from a desk is just too big for twich/fast games. It was fine for a slow styled game like an RTS. It was fun playing supreme commander on it, but it wasn't good for fast games. I have no such problems from the 32" monitor.

I did not try the EDID edit. It seems that is customized specifially for the LG and I figured there is no way it would work after I read a bit more on it. I still might give it a go sometime, but I'm happy with the toshibia the way it looks now --- I'd rate text at 90-95% perfect.
 
I ordered the Toshiba 2 weeks ago, snow delayed delivery until Monday. I'll post here when I get a chance to test it out. I've been through the Panasonic, LG, and 2 Vizio 32" LCD's, all returned because of crapola text. Hopefully this one is better. I will admit, I probably had the wrong cable for the LG though, and if the Toshiba is no good, I'm going to give the LG another shot.
 
wrong cable for LG? What kind of cable where you using? Daddy-o --- if you end up liking the Toshiba too --- one of us should probably start a thread on it recommending it as a PC monitor option. It doesn't seem to have a lot of press for this purpose and may be overlocked by people who end up purchasing someting inferior for monitor use. Let me know what you think. I'm not 100% satisfied because text is only 90-95% perfect ---- but I'm definately satisfied enought that I don't intend to return it. I think it's probably about the best there is at this time --- unless you want to pay Dell $1200 for one of their 30" ultra sharp monitors. For $350 on this Toshiba - I can deal with 95% satisfied! :p

The only issue I have found with text is red text on black/gray backgrounds is a bit fuzzy. I notice this on WoW a little bit, but by no means is it a deal breaker.

It shouldn't matter to my knowledge. DVI and HDMI put out the same signal - just that HDMI bundles audio with it. HDMI and DVI can be converted using a passive connector. The PC/laptop/monitor should never be able to tell the difference to my knowledge.

That's what I thought, but reading through the threads on avsforum, it definitely matters for 4:4:4. DVI-HDMI is the only way that works. It's VERY picky about the setup in order to get 4:4:4.

Not a deal breaker for me because the only way I've ever even saw red text on blackbackground was in a forum describing 4:4:4 failure. I'm happy with this Toshiba 32E200U TV as a monitor, but might keep my eye out for a cheap LG 32LD450 to compare. I do much prefer this toshiba to the LG 32LE5300 and the Panasonic 37u22 TV as far as PC monitor use though. I've played about 10 hours of games on it at 1080p from my PC and it works fantastic - no noticable input lag, and good sharp graphics. I still think text is 90-95% perfect on the toshiba 32E200U (outside of black background and red text) Everything at Hardforum looks good though.


any idea if the larger Toshiba 40E200U has an IPS panel in it? I sit pretty far from my monitor, so I need to go larger than a 32/37

so its between this 40E200U and the the LG 42LD450, Im too worried about the blu ray playback, as this is mainly a business pc, and only occasionaly movies

The panasonic and the lg looked better on blu-ray's than the Toshiba does ------ but the toshiba doesn't look bad by any means. All look great. Just the LG and the Pansasonic looked fantastic on blu-rays. The 42LD450 isn't as good as a panel as the 32le5300 that I used, so I'd not really have much comment on the 42ld450. I can tell you that the 37" panasonic looks incredible on blurays though. My vote remains with the toshiba. You can enjoy a blu-ray and enjoy it as a PC monitor. On the Pansasonic you'll likely only enjoy it as a blu-ray player since the text is prolly 75% good as compared to 90-95% good on the toshiba. I guess I'd vote that the toshiba is more versatile. I have no comment on the 42LD450 since I've not used one. The panasonics all have the same alpha ips panel, but the toshiba's appear to have some sort alternate panel. My toshiba leaves a dark streak behind my finger if I apply pressure while moving my finger along the screen. The toshiba has great blacks though, and good colors overall. I like the menus the best of any o the tvs I've tried on the toshiba.



I don't think it's all about the panel type though. I've read that mac book pros have TN panels, yet I think the mac book pro I have is one of --- if not the best monitor screen I've ever seen.

I don't think anyone makes a 40" S-IPS or IPS-Alpha, so it's probably a better VA panel, especially if it leaves a streak when you apply pressure to it.

Archaea, I don't remember if you mentioned it before, but how would you describe the blacks on that Toshiba? Are they a little crushed, or do the shades come through 100% clearly? Are they noticeably better than the Panny U22 IPS panel?

Otherwise like i said before, great find with that Toshiba, going to keep it on my "watch list", and if i find a 37" or a 40" for a great price then i may just buy it :)
 
Ok, I have it hooked up. I will agree, text is 95%. I'm somewhat spoiled because I'm coming from an HP 24" IPS panel with amazing text, but the Toshiba is the best of the bunch so far.

I haven't gamed on it yet, but moving the windows around the desktop, lag is not noticeable (on the Panasonic 32" it was definitely noticeable).

I really wonder if I had gotten the right cable for the LG if it wouldn't have been the screen to keep...
 
daddy-o. I have both the DVI to HDMI cable and a standard HDMI cable. I have used them both to compare against what you've read on avsforum. It makes no perceivable difference to me on the toshiba 32e200u. I think the guys at AVS are seeing placebo ----- or it must be a specific luxory of the LG 32ld450. In my opinion it's likely placebo -- because since the signal can be converted passively the signal is likely the exact same.

Did you try my calibration settings on the last page to see if you like them? If you find calibration settings you like better please let me know and I'll try your settings.

I will say this. That while watching avator bluray on the panasonic in a dark scene everything looked perfect. I didn't configure the Toshiba at all for blu-ray, but when I watched the same scene I noticed what appeared to be banding on the toshiba. I have NOT noticed this on any PC games, but only on the avatar movie on the unconfigured toshiba. It was as likely a configuration issue in the setup as anything else.

I'm using a 32EX400 as a PC monitor now and find myself wanting to go back to a glossy screen.
 
The 4:4:4 test on avsforum is pretty black and white, and they claim that it works with DVI-HDMI and no other config. Not sure you can call it placebo.

As for glossy, the only one I know is the Samsung UN32C5000, the 32" LED LCD.

Can't think of the right way to describe "crushed blacks" at the moment but it's blacks, even deep blacks, that can't reproduce the picture detail within it (un-detailed blacks?). VA panels occasionally have it, but sometimes it can be tweaked away.

Very mild/occasional banding would not other me, like you said it might just be a hiccup with your settings and that specific movie. Have you tried testing it on the windows desktop yet?

Just keep in mind that it's a large monitor size to be reflecting off of. I know some are what could be described as "semi-glossy", i just don't know what 2010/2011 models qualify.

Definitely not a placebo effect. I've tested the Toshiba 32E200U, LG 32LD450, and a few others. After tweaking the settings on both sets, the difference in text quality on both sets was clearly noticeable. To my eyes, the text on the e200u was much softer whereas on the ld450 it was much crisper. This difference is most likely attributed to the lack of 4:4:4 on the e200u (unfortunately I didn't run any 4:4:4 tests when I had the e200u, so I can't say for certain). In my opinion, it all comes down to personal preference -- some people prefer softer cleartype-like text whereas some people prefer pixel sharp text. I am in the latter.

As for the DVI->HDMI versus HDMI->HDMI discussion, although the video signal between the two formats is identical, Nvidia and ATI drivers will make a distinction between the two. For example, in Catalyst Control Center, plug the TV using a HDMI->HDMI connection and CCC will detect the TV as an HDMI device. But plug the TV using a DVI->HDMI connection, and CCC will detect the TV as a DVI device. For whatever strange reason, when the TV is seen as a HDMI device, 4:4:4 is disabled. If 4:4:4 over HDMI->HDMI is desired, you have to use an EDID override, which essentially forces the video drivers to detect a HDMI->HDMI connection as a DVI device (but the side effect is that you lose audio over HDMI).

To complicate matters further, there are reports that a DVI->HDMI connection still fails 4:4:4 too. But fortunately the same EDID override fix works in this instance too (even though it doesn't really make sense in this context).

I personally have no idea if this problem is specific to the LD450 or if its universal, but there are some strong theories on avsforum that claim this is a universal problem. Unfortunately, given that there aren't that many 4:4:4 capable TVs out there to begin with, its hard to validate.
 
I just picked up a LG 37LD450 with the S-IPS panel. I used thepoohcontinuum's settings over on AVSforum for a basis on getting the pic right, I had to modify some settings but I got it about 95% good. Red text is probably the worst. I used DVI to HDMI, changed it to 4:4:4 in the nVidia control panel and install that .inf (it did say it was invalid but it showed up as Adam so I left it) fix to be on the safe side. It's just fucking sick for movies and games.

do you know if the lg ld550 has problems with the VA vs IPS panels that I'm hearing about with the lg32le5300 and also COSTCO is selling the ld550 for 400.00 do ypu think that is a good buy and this is for tv viewing only
 
If costco has one on display, just do a finger test to see what panel type it is.
 
my local costo has 32LD450 w/ips panel for $399CDN... Bravias are $40 more expenisve... I'm thinking about picking up LG before they disapear from their stock...

If I only could convince my better half??? :(...hmmm... Honey it would be easier for your eyes to browse FF on 32".... hahah.... My current 20" NEC still kicks ars, but it is a little to samllish for gaming... :D
