Dell U2311H

Should be U2311H changed to another one if there is a backlight bleed?

How bad is it? Is it really distracting? Is it backlight bleed or IPS glow? If so (distracting backlight bleed) then exchange. However, be aware you could get another with worse problems or a refurbished.

I don't have it yet, but thinking of buying. Sadly, I'm afraid of it's backlight bleed and can't decide to take U2311H or not.

Just got my U2311H for $200, notice some slight tinting to the right of the monitor. A tiny little bit pinkish, only noticeable on white screens. Think it's worth the hassle to go through an exchange?

I recently purchased the U2311H revision A01 December. Monitor exhibited no tinting on white backgrounds. Back-light bleeding was minimal.

However within a few days this changed. My display unit is now exhibiting atrocious bleeding on the lower right hand corner which is covering about 25% of the monitor. This is seen looking at it straight on, never mind on angles. Even though I bought this unit on sale the cons simply do not outweigh the pros here since it's 1 fault is too severe to overlook.

Quality Control on these models from dell is ridiculous. My roomates NECEA231WMI with the same panel has non of these problems.

The Dell is very easy on the eyes, has great contrast and good color. Such a shame considering all the great attributes this model has.

Also the 8ms response time is slow and shows ghosting that is noticeable to me. My previous Monitor the NEC-20WMGX2 6ms is much faster(performs like 2ms TN). You might think 2ms difference is not much but trust me it is. I assume NEC implemented a much better overdrive. For those of you who gamed on the 20wmgx2 for many years this Dell unit will disappoint when it comes to fast paced games. I am not saying the Dell is horribly slow, cause it's not(I was willing to live with it's 8ms) but don't expect it to perform similar like the faster 6ms S-IPS.

I assume if I return this for a replacement that Dell is going to ship me a Refurb unit? If so I will just return it back for a full refund and maybe look into settling for a cheap Acer G24 TN panel.

Anyone used this for color calibration using i1 display 2?
Does the monitor green tinted?

my 2209wa looked a bit green after calibration using the i1 Display2 eye-one match but only onder "warm" or standard ccfls/incandesant bulbs.

I re-calibrated a few times but basically the regular modes are very warm color temp wise so unless you tweak it the color profile will mess with the green channel to get the gamma closer to 2.2 and you can see such in the "before and after" chart.

Is loaded up HCFR and tried to calibrate the greyscale across a larger range instead of only the top end so I'd have a more balanced curve but in the end since the 2209wa doesn't have RGB gain and bias controls you have to either use a better profile software like coloreyes display pro to make a better profile.

Just ordered this bad boy. I'm coming from a 17inch dell lcd from like 7 years ago so I'm sure I will be blown away no matter what. However I will be safe than sorry and post up pics for your guys to see if mine came from a bad batch

Ordered one too, waiting for it to arrive.

This is a separate case but, be warned..

If anyone of you own a pistol or some type of firearm, please give to someone to keep away from you should you have to contact dell technical support. The broken English overseas dept. I had to speak to is horrible and at the end of the conversation (if you can even call it that) I wanted to ***king kill myself.

Sorry, had to vent.

Got this monitor a couple weeks ago and, god damn, I am impressed. Paid $240 CAD (before taxes) thanks to the boxing day sales. Rev A01, ordered on December 31st but it didnt ship until Jan 5th thanks to some system glitch. The IPS tinting can be iffy if you look down at it but its almost unnoticeable from the sides and from below. Head-on is perfect. Backlight bleed is pretty much non-existent and i havent noticed any ghosting or input lag at all either!

Settings:
Brightness - 41 (I usually turn it down at night)
Contrast - 75
R - 98
G - 98
B - 99

Im a little bit bothered by the tinting when looking down at the screen seeing as I am occasionally standing at the desk to do small tasks while playing instruments but its nothing too terrible. Dont really need perfect images just to switch up tracks or throw a compressor in a loop anyway ;)

Overall, i would definitely suggest this over pretty much any TN Panel in the same price range. I may have gotten lucky with the practically flawless panel (from a proper viewing angle) but after viewing a ton of different monitors before and after getting mine, even the flawed U2311Hs ive seen still look better. My only complaint would be no option of a glossy cover but thats barely a real complaint.

I have a question, though. Is it possible to stretch lower resolutions to fit the whole screen? More specifically, those resolutions that the monitor supports by default? I was trying to play Diablo 2 the other day and it put the game into a very small box in the center of the screen. I love the 1:1 pixel feature for most things but having that happen on the very low resolutions is frustrating as hell. Im running an 8600GTS (yes i plan to upgrade soon haha) and im open to software upscalers if necessary.

Are you sure that's not your graphics card overriding the scaling or the game itself? Check your settings in the Nvidia control panel.

I think by default, any resolution game (4:3, 16:9 or otherwise) should fill the screen to the shortest edge, be it vertical or horizontal. The U2311H doesn't have a built in scaler for 1:1 pixel mapping, unlike the U2410.

One thing you may want to try, presuming you're only playing Diablo II single player (you'll get banned if playing multiplayer) and on 1.12, is this resolution hack that should allow you to use your Dell's native resolution.

Oooh, i feel silly. Apparently the resolutions are listed twice, once under HDTV and once under PC. I had the HDTV one selected which changes some of the settings pages and brought up the custom resizer in place of the scaling options. Switched it over and i have full control now. I was curious where that crap went after switching from my Samsung monitor, damn.

Thanks!

EDIT: I did some testing to recreate the "issue". I did it by setting the resolution to 1920x1080 under the HDTV category, going to Adjust Desktop Size and Position, clicking Resize Desktop and hitting Okay without changing/pinching anything. From there on out, all default resolutions will go to the HDTV listings automatically and are mapped 1:1 in the center of the screen. All custom resolutions just stretch to the full screen.

Its actually kinda handy considering the nVidia scaling options have never worked on my card...

On a positive note though, the last couple of days I spent on my Macbook Pro only (now I hooked it back to Dell U2311H again), and was quite amazed about the overall picture/colors quality on Dell! The colors really do look inaccurate and overly saturated on the laptop compared to when having it hooked to U2311H! Quite a difference. I'm quite pleased.

Another of my observations would be that it seems the tinting on the screen sort of seems to vary. At times it's pretty much barely noticeable, but on other occasions the left half of the screen seems "dirtier" than the right one and you can't miss it on a white background...

Anyways, I try not to even think about it and it helps a little, not noticing it as much. (I have A01).

Anyone hear a very very faint buzzing sound from their monitor?

I bought a NIB U2211H from Dell on eBay. There seems to be a very very faint buzzing sound whenever the monitor is on and displaying a picture.

ok I felt this might help some make a decision about this dell monitor if they are on the fence... On january 25,2011 me and my fiancee decided to go with a dell monitor for her home office. We placed the order and chose 2nd day delivery... after a few days we check our order status and it says it was delayed until feb 2. We figure something must have happened, no big deal we'll just get our money back for the shipping this is on feb 1st. the next day we go to check the status again and call dell and now it says that the monitor wont be arriving until the 9th of february.

We felt that this was an awful long time to wait for a monitor so we decided to call dell and 1. get our shipping cost refunded and 2. a solid date for shipping... this is where the fun begins... my fiancee calls and apparently gets someone who can barely speak english she confirms she still wants the monitor delivered and asks when it will actually arrive and about the shipping costs. the rep on the phone says he cant answer any of her questions can someone return her call...she agrees and that was the end of phone call #1. Dell later calls back and leaves a message that they need confirmation from her that she still wants her monitor delivered...she just confirmed that the mornning of the same day.

I decide to call instead this time and try to figure this out. I call and this time notice a very strong philipines accent instead of an indian one... on top of that I can hear screaming children in the back ground... I am greeted with a "hello?" i answer "is this dell?" he replies yes it is. thinking this was a little strange I continue and begin asking about the monitor and the delivery date and shipping. he immediatly states he has no information and will transfer me to someone who knows... I get transfered and have to repeat the whole story again where the rep promply hangs up... no call back from dell whatsoever.

phonecall #3 I call dell again go through the same process, get put on hold... and i am hung up on again...

phone call #4 once again I call dell and clearly state this is the fourth time I've tried to simply get a delivery date for our monitor and a refund for shipping, and at this point I clearly state that if it isnt resolved in this phone call I will simply cancel the order... after an appology for my troubles (you guessed it) i am hung up on once again.

So as you can imagine we canceled the order with dell and instead ordered the NEC version of the same panel through amazon the NEC EA231WMi . its due to arrive in 3 days. The funny part about this is we were going to buy a laptop from dell too after the monitor arrived, Im soooooo glad we waited. if they cant even ship a simple monitor without a problem I dont even want to imagine what their customer support is like...

ok I felt this might help some make a decision <snip>

Yup, they outsourced their tech. support to India it looks/sounds like. Most God awful experience talking to them, I basically had to for my other monitor (which was like pissing into the wind) and got no where. Dell and Asus are now on my shit list for horrible support (amongst other things.)

Yes. It disappears when you bump the screen brightness to like 90, but otherwise the slight buzzing sound is pretty much always present - sometimes slightly louder, sometimes less audible, but it's there.

Just got mine in the other day. Rev A01 Made in December 2010. Don't have a calibrator handy so I just left it on standard preset but dropped the brightness to 30. What you guys think?

It looks flawless. Your camera is too close to get an accurate depiction of any backlight bleed because of the IPS glow.

If I am getting an IPS monitor mainly for gaming, will I see much of a difference between this and the U2410 (image quality and color wise)?

If you are getting an IPS monitor, mainly for gaming, go for the U2311. Its a 1920X1080 more suited for PS3 and 360 and Blu-Ray viewing. Plus its cheaper(much) than its big brother.
I have both, and game mainly on the 2311 for PS3 and 360 and on the 2410 for PC games.

Well, I'm doing only pc gaming on the desktop monitor. How do you like the 2410 vs the 2311? I'm actually debating between these two exact monitors.

Is the 1200 res. noticably bigger? How do the screens compare? I'm wait for the 2311 to show up around $200 and the 2410 for $450.

Looking at the two side by side the U2410 dwarfs the U2311. The U2311 is an inch smaller but looks tiny. I prefer playing PC games at 1920X1200 resolutions that's why I prefer the U2410. I notice no lag with my Games. Plus I was lucky to purchase it new last week from Craig's List, Vancouver for $350 from a needy University student. I like the plethora of connections.

I have sold the U2311 for $260 (one month old). Its being picked up today. Doesn't work well as dual monitors. Different resolutions.

However, if you only need the monitor for Gaming why pay $500 for a U2410 when you can get a Asus VW266H cheaper. It 1900X1200 and has all the connections of the U2410, including a attached speaker.

is there anyway to fix it?? reset the display somehow??

I get the problem when I manually turn off my monitor all the time. I decided to just leave it in power saving mode. When the problem occurred, I unplugged and replugged the both the power and DVI cables after a minute. Figured out it was me turning off the monitor all the time using the power button on the monitor that was causing it. Weird issue to be honest.

got a pair from the ebay dell deal. $450 out the door. I love the monitors. Considering mounting the one on the right vertically for optimal web browsing and such.

More like optimal fapping :p, j/k.

I was thinking about getting another, do you use an ARM or something to orient the screens like that? Can't really tell from the picture.

I'm having a major problem with Dell.

I ordered a monitor a week ago+. It was supposed to BE here yesterday. I called, they said it was out of stock and after asking for faster shipping, he gave it to me and told me that it will ship the 17th.

This morning I just got an email telling me it won't ship until the 22nd!?

Yet they're still being SOLD on Dell's site. No mention of being out of stock.

They gave me a discount on this monitor because of a coupon I had, I got it for $260 before tax. I think they're jerking me around because it was discounted . . . . . Any thoughts?

I'm calling tomorrow and going to ask if they have this in stock (they'll think I'm buying). If they say yes, I'm demanding to speak to a manager and tell him to give me one and stop delaying my shipment!

Anyone else having problems like this?

Just ordered two at $239 from Dell.ca on Feb. 16, I will post back the results when they arrive.

The light is hitting the monitor on the left, too. It doesn't look like it because the AG coating isn't harsh. Look at the bezel and you'll see the light.

If you were curious about the AG coating,

So figured i would point this out for anyone who is looking for one:
Dell U2311H 23" Widescreen Flat Panel, 3 year Warranty Direct From Dell - $249.99

This is from the Dell Direct ebay account.

Looks like they have ~44 of the U2311H in the ebay sale

Just wanted to point it out since I bought a U2311H for 274.99 on Tuesday before dell posted these. You can thank me to being that guy who causes the sale to happen!

I received two U2311H monitors on tuesday! (Feb. 22).

I was worried about receiving two different revisions, but luckily both are A01. There is no backlight bleed at all, zero dead pixels, and so far I haven't noticed any colour tint (tested on an all-white screen).

They, of course, have the IPS glow when showing black in a dark room, but it is totally a non-issue.

The monitors are pretty much perfect, viewing angles aren't that impressive, but other than that I'm very happy with them.

Been waiting for 3 weeks to get my rev A02 (btw, what are the few main differences between the A01 and A02?), it's rare and hard to get here. :D

I've had CRTs for almost 10 years, so I guess this eye strain & disorientation I feel while reading will disappear once/if my eyes adapt to this screen. It might be due to AG coating and lower refresh rate (noticed that it feels strange on my eyes when I changed from 85 Hz to 60 Hz on my old CRT) , but, as I've said, I hope that will change, I don't want to get rid of this and go through this strenuous research again. :D

I'm also noticing some IPS glow, but as the above user said, it's nothing big, and doesn't distract me in any way. Colors are great, even better than on my dying Samsung 959NF CRT that originally cost me 4 times the amount I paid for U2311H.

Also, did anyone else experience this -- when I use these settings (default ones work fine): R=99, G=95, B=98, and when I scroll the black text on white pages, it gets kinda blurred, with orange-red glow around the text? Got these settings from flatpanelshd, I know that's not the best way, but after going through (software) calibration procedures, it seems to be optimal for my Dell, too.

EDIT: Seems to occur without my 'calibrated' settings, too, but its less visible then.

Thanks.

Ok I pulled the trigger. $280 shipped. What Rev is the newest one? Also I keep hearing about this monitor and buzzing. I hope that's not the case. Thanks...
