HP ZR24w

Is your Asus screen matte or glossy?
... Also, is your Ausus an LED monitor?
My ASUS (VE276Q) has a matte screen.

The ASUS VE278Q is LED backlit - with same specs as mine - but I did not want to chance an eye problem with the LED version because I know that standard (cheapo) TFT monitors have never been a problem for me. Plus the LED model is more $s (and I want to get three, so that matters more).

There's a thread about it:
http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1546485

Hmmm... I may take a chance with the LED for the next one as it is now just $30 more than my version:

Yeah, I wish the HP ZR24w worked out for me - it has all the things I wanted plus a slightly thinner bezel than the ASUS, an adjustable stand, etc. They did a great job on the HP especially for the price.

I got a NEC EA231WMi and I'm considering returning it for the HP ZR24w but i have 2 quick questions;

  1. Does the ZR24w have uneven tinting problems like the NEC EA231WMi?
  2. Is HP still intending on releasing a firmware to fix the lack of 1:1 pixel mapping?
  3. how much "thinner" in width would this 24"/16:10 HP be, compared to the 23"/16:9 NEC?

1:1 pixel map for HDTV resolutions is never coming. someone needs to put this in big bold letters on every page of this thread.

1. Don't know about the EA231WMi, but we got two ZR24w's at work and then me and a friend of mine bought them for ourselves as well. So from those 4 HP's that I've seen, three are virtually problem free when it comes to tinting. Only one has a tiny bit of a red to green tint vertically. Not really noticeable on a completely white screen, only when you compare an object on the top and bottom of the screen. I would say it's a minor case of tinting but it's there so it means not all are problem free.

2. I believe they said it can't and won't be fixed with a firmware.

3. You mean the actual image dimensions? If so, a 24" 16:10 monitor should be slightly (5-10mm) wider than a 23" 16:9 one.

Guys, about to buy from macmall. The Smart Buy model is $399. The regular model is $500+. what the heck is the difference?

They pointed out the UPC codes are different..I think

HP does this with every frigging office product they make. I have seen this question 50 times by now.

HP has a regular priced unit they sell to end users.

Then they have a silly priced unit that they sell in corporate contracts where they then give a discount. It seems insane, but this was the only explanation I have ever seen and it has been like this as long as I have been checking HP products online (5+ years).

Buy the cheaper one FFS!

Some people just don't listen do they?

If you mean the VM633A4 vs VM633A8 thing, I was told they are the exact same monitor. AFAIK, there are no different models of ZR24w's, they are all the same.

No need to be rude. Simply asking a question that almost nobody seems to know about, with no explanation on either macmall or HP websites.

Sorry you feel I was rude to you, I disagree. Anyhow, I gave you the facts in my very 1st response. There is nothing different.

Thanks for the helpful replies. the size comparison was especially helpful.

One last question though just to be clear

I understand it doesn't have and won't have 1:1 pixel mapping for HD resolutions, but what about standard 4:3 resolutions like 1024x768? If I'm running a 1024x768 game, is there no way to keep it from stretching the picture across the entire screen?

Thanks

has anyone had problems using cheap 5m display port cables with this monitor as i have bought 3 different makes of cables so far and none of them have worked with it.

the Lindy cable that came with it works fine but i need a 10m cable cheap and there ain't any that i can find in the uk.

I think one of my ZR24 monitors may be dying. It started blinking once in the while the other day. It basically goes black for a second and then comes back. Power light stays on. Sometimes this happens once every 10-20 minutes to once every 20 seconds. It may be my mini displayport to displayport adapter, however DVI all of a sudden will not work on the monitor. My computer will see it attached, but the monitor says there is no signal even when manually set to DVI. I have always used displayport with this one, so it is possible the DVI has connector has been messed up for a while. I have also tried a couple different cables with no luck.

I have another adapter coming so I can check it out, but I am pretty doubtful it will make a difference. Sigh.

This may sound DUMB, but check that both the power and DVI/Display cables are both FIRMLY attached. Mine was doing the same thing and I started to fret. Turns out I just needed to jiggle the power cable back FIRMLY in place. Been fine now ever since.

Yeah I even tried different power cable and different DVI/displayport cable. Still having the same issue. I should have the new mini displayport adapter Tuesday, will retest then.

Got my replacement ZR24w today, so far so good. No dead pixels and no tinting to speak of. I must say that I was impressed with HP's support. Called in the issue yesterday afternoon and had a tech at my house this mornnig with a replacement monitor.

Its WAY cool they just bring a new one to customers.

Do you need to sign up for business support, or extended warranties to get this kind of replacement service, or is it just part of the package when you buy an ZR24W?

Glad you ended up on this forum as there was no response to your question on the other thread. As far as I understand because the ZR24w is a business class product it automatically qualifies for the upgraded coverage. Both mine have been bought from HP, one new and one from the refurb department. Cannot say with certainty how warranties work when purchased from third party vendors. I have chosen to deal with HP directly to be sure things get taken care of. If you go back a few pages I posted my experience with the refurb that was damaged in shipment and the great service I got on a new panel. If you notice on the HP website the ZR24w is sold through the Small Business section. On the refurb I got from HP it had the exact same warranty as the new one I purchased when they first came out. Am already considering a third one and have no problem buying refurb from HP.

i have 3 years warranty with mine and if it goes wrong i will have a new one next working day in the UK.

also had a dell monitor go last year and had a replacement sent out the next working day, he just swapped my dead one for a working one so i did not even need the box just the faulty monitor.

can anyone confirm or deny that running 4:3 resolutions (like 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x960) will stretch the picture to the entire screen with no way to retain aspect ratio with black bars on left & right?

(reason I ask is because some old games only support that)

Thanks,

Has anyone here owned both this monitor and the 23" NEC EA231WMi? I'm still considering returning my NEC and paying a extra $100 for this HP. The color uniformity is my main complaint with the NEC, but it's not usually noticeable unless I specifically look for it. I wouldn't mind the extra screen space on the HP, but I'm trying to weigh if it's worth the extra $100. I'm also concerned about the quality of the HP's stand and

Any opinions? I'm fairly happy with the NEC and I'm on a limited budget, but I don't want to be stuck with the NEC if the HP is a lot better. my main intent is for gaming. (16:10 vs 16:9 isn't an issue for me)

Hey everyone

Just one quick question - Is the Zr24w discontinued? Here in Denmark there's absolutely NO (online)stores that have this monitor in stock, just says "Unkown delivery" :(
I was considering buying either the Zr30w or Dell u3011, but the low price of the Zr24w made me change my mind: USD 387 (Zr24w) vs USD 1865 (Zr30w). That's a huge price difference.

What do you think? I don't think the monitor is this popular in Denmark, but I could be wrong..

Not discontinued as far as I know.

Hi, and thanks for your reply.
It's just odd that there's no stores having them in stock  I guess I'd have to wait and see what happens, if I want this monitor.

There are some on ebay, from new to refurbs to used, if that helps you. Mine came from ebay new with a full warranty.

I have never tried buying expensive equipment off ebay. It'd be nice with danish warranty though, as I can buy through my dads company and safe some cash. So I have to stick to danish retailers, just have to find one first :) But thanks for trying!

My monitor was my first purchase from ebay also for something like this. I have told people here about it and some have gotten one also from the same people. Very happy I did it.

Sounds nice. You got it off ebay.com or ebay.co.uk(maybe link the person you bought it from, if available)? I can't purchase from .com, since I have to pay a lot of taxes, import fee and stuff, and then it'll end up much more expensive than danish retailers :)

EDIT: Nevermind, I just looked on ebay.co.uk, and it seems like all the zr24w's ships from U.S.A.

I'm about ready to order one of these, but it's almost a tossup between this and the u2410. My roommate has a u2410, so it will be easy to compare the two, but if I like the u2410 better, I can't return the zr24w without paying a restocking fee. I figure the 100-150 dollars I save will make up for the slight differences in the two. On a side note, where is the best place to order one of these? They aren't sold locally, and cheapest ones are from oddball places online I've never used before. I see that I can order directly from HP though...

I recently went though a nightmare trying to get this monitor from www.compsource.com. I do not recomend them.

Ordered on December 02, was told item is on heavy backorder and it will be coming in on the 31st. I said.. ok i really want this screen, i'll wait.

31st rolled around, and nothing, I emailed them, they said the 7th, I said ok.. 7th came around, they got about 30 in stock, and the price on the website went up from 390 /w free shipping to 402.00 and shipping.

I emailed again asking about ship dates, they said not till the 14th, I said you have them in stock, I see it on the website, they said they got those from a different vendor, and could not sell them at 390, and offered me to pay the difference! (unbelievable!, seriously?)

I said you gotta be kidding me, i'll wait till the 14th if it's not shipped by then im going to cancel my order and never do business with you again. I called back on the 17th and asked about shipping, they said the 24th! I said cancel it. They where prompt with a refund.

I then ordered it from B&H Photo, on monday morning, 1-17-11, and B&H shiped it the same day, I should have it on thursday...

those people at compsource are a bunch of clowns, avoid that place like the plague.
They also had very poor communication, terrible phone support, 30+ minutes on hold, a few ignored emails etc.

This monitor was almost impossible to find during all of December, it was sold out practically everywhere. Like the top 10 results on google products were all sold out. Only ebay had them, and I was kind of skeptical of buying off ebay, though I do see some others have had good experiences with that. Most of the ebay ones where refurbed at almost the same price as new.

This is why 90% of my online purchases start and stop at newegg, I just go there and get what I want, and most of the time these days I don't even check competitor prices. I've been shopping there for a decade and they have always been A+. Unfortunately they did not stock this monitor for months, and they finally have some now, but are asking 519.00 for it. A bit too high.

I just ordered from the HP Refurbished store (look under Small Business section); should be arriving tomorrow, so lets see if the promise holds out.

The other main options that seemed to exist, with 'known stores' (not that I've had personal experience with) are Mac Mall and Cost Central.

Here's some info that helped me decide on the refurbished route, along with the $339 price tag (plus I negotiated a small discount):
  • 10 day: Return for any reason, but pay shipping
  • 30 day: Return is something is wrong, HP pays shipping. Either repair or return.
  • 30+ days: under warranty
  • No specification for number for dead pixels
  • Shipping $16

Downside was I had to pay tax direct.
