Kicked for Being Deaf

One of the reason why I tried an MMO game years ago, left and never got into any MMO since.

The biggest turn off in an MMO is always the community which is full of retarded kids.

Yeah.... not always though. I remember a few MMOs that didn't. This one is spammed on TV and all though, with game cards available in stores for cash...... With WoW being pay-to-play (CC # only), I'd be surprised there be so many immature little kids.

Back in my old TFC days, I had a teammate who was missing several fingers on each hand. Sure, he couldn't bunnyhop w/o the use of a script, but he was still a good teammate. Yeah, he did have the propensity of shooting the other team in the back (while not against the rules, was frowned upon)... but that's off topic.

I feel bad for the guy. Voice communications is almost required for team gaming these days. If I had a guild, I wouldn't have kicked him out, but I would expect him to understand that the guild/team/squad/etc couldn't give up complete voice comms just to cater to him.

I've been through the same experiences as I used to run 40 man Naxxramas, BWL, or whatever where they didn't have any problem. Then when Blizzard implemented the 25-man concept, people had to be cut out and I was one of them. I asked why and they said it was because they need communications a top priority. I said fuck it, left the guild, and joined another one. It pissed me off but I also blame Blizzard for reducing the limit because 14 other people got cut out too and they did quit as a result. There's still plenty of groups that will let me play with them but it's still annoying when I tell them to type it out instead of telling me something on vent. Same thing applies for Eve Online.

The switch from 40 man to 10/25 was a very good thing. You had a lazy leader. He could have recruited more and had 2 25 mans like many raiding guilds do. Could have even cycled in alts of the main group and kept everyone raiding.

40 mans sucked to run and organize. It may not sound like much but getting 25 people together and on the same page is vastly easier than doing so with 40.

I wish people would stop using vent. It is a inconveince. I use vent, but I listen only and prefer to type. But the douches never pay attention to text.

I was booted out of an ICC raid because I typed I had to use the restroom (And I told them if it was 1 or 2, it was 2...we werent doing anyting) and I had to go...I get back to find out because I didnt SAY i was going to take a shit I was kicked.

To things ruin Wow's fun...vent and retards. Oh and gearscore was another thing. But seems like that fad is over with.

Hope this dude finds a guild who gives two shits. WoW is fun...but it's hard to find people who make it fun. (When you're at raiding levels...otherwise it's fun in general)

I feel for the guy due to his condition, but I really have no sympathy for this guild story. It's just further proof how stupid of a game WoW is and how people take what is really not even that hugely impressive of a game so seriously (for a MMO mind you it's tops, but I still dont feel it stacks up amazingly as a game for the time and dedication people put into it).

Everyone posting was near the level max and have probably rerun the same stupid instances over and over to get hard to find loot like a bunch of zombies.....this is the point where you usually STOP playing a game, but this "end game" is where the "fun" apparently really happens.

My advice to the guy, find joy and fulfillment in something more real and worthy of your time, not only because these so called "gamers" that coordinate rehearsed tactics over "vent" dont appreciate him, but to just do something more worth his time.

Also interesting, he claims every guild he turned to pretty much treated him like crap, but then he made this forum post and all these people give him an outpouring of support? I'd be happy and all, but I'd tell the WoW community and it's collective bi-polar population to piss off and take up reading instead.

All this story proves to me is that many people are selfish pricks regardless of gender and regardless of venue. People this guy thought were his 'friends' turn on him when they decided that he is broken and therefore inconvenient to their aims and goals. I'm sure he got some sympathy and well wishes from those within his guild, but not enough to matter that he got booted anyway. I don't play MMO's because of jackholes that lurk amongst the throngs of people who pay good money not to get virtually assailed by these morons. My money and my time are to precious to me to give in to this kind of nonsense. I have to deal with people like this as it is in real life, why the hell would I pay good money to do it online voluntarily? I wish this guy nothing but speedy health and recovery in both mind, body, and spirit. He deserves better from people when a tragedy like this strikes.

He should have expected that. I can only imagine what the casual 5 mans were like, everyone screwing around on vent and you're just sitting there in silence now, kind of awkward. Are they supposed to not use it anymore and start typing everything? It's not their fault he's deaf now. I was pretty surprised at this part when I first read it: "Do you know what the first question i got from my guild leader was? He asked me if i could still use vent.", but then when you think about the fact that there are various levels of deafness (50% deaf in both ears, 80% in one ear etc), it made more sense.

I'm interested in seeing what guild chat was like though, not going to immediately mark it off as the guild being douchebags.

Eh? I don't remember anything in Everquest that compared to the complexity or difficulty of raids in WOW like heroic Mimiron, yogg 0-light, or heroic lich king. EQ never really fundamentally got past the 'gear check for class x' paradigm until the release of Depths of Darkhallow relatively late in the game. EQ had much slower pacing - for example, you had 10 seconds to click the OMM mask. WOW typically gives you 2~4 seconds to react to events. And while WOW had DBM, EQ had emotes and audio triggers, which were really much more powerful because they worked for *everything*, while DBM doesn't help with many boss effects that only provide visual cues (for example, Prof Putricide's goo balls).

You're comparing 6 year old EQ content to more recent WoW content. Audio triggers, which *don't* work for everything don't help deaf people anyway. Many emotes now have different tags, which cannot be directed to their own chat window, either.

What in this game has an audio trigger without visual as well? Start paying attention and you will notice a deaf person should have no issues once the guild drops the vent crutch.

All audio triggers are text/emote activated in EQ.

No, deaf people have no problem playing the game without vent, it is not needed. I was going off topic about WoW vs. EQ raid complexity :)

I feel sorry for the guy, I can't imagine losing my hearing all at once. It would be bad enough losing it gradually, but all of a sudden would be very tramautic. If Played WOW with him I'd bend over backwards to help the poor guy out, but alot of kids these days are lazy selfish and spoiled little assholes. I blame their parents for raising them that way.

Gotcha. I did raid in EQ but not much and its really hard to compare the 2.

Having been a raid leader / assist during a decent portion of ICC,audio cues are not *THAT* important. Really it's only necessary when something doesn't go according to plan, you're doing new hard content (where you're multitasking and hearing someone say "everyone stack", etc is *really* handy vs looking for a DBM / DVX timer), but really, it's all about raid awareness.

Now I can see it depending on his role a bit too. If he's a Druid, people calling out for a battle rez may be an issue, as it tends to be time sensitive... but to just say "yeah, we're not making exceptions, you can't raid without vent" generally means they're idiots since they're obviously not a serious cutting-edge competitive guild.

That seems like a pretty crappy for that guy. I read some of the replies on the original forum and noticed that a guy made a comment saying, "there are some people who arent deaf and can use vent and still dont listen" I find this very often true... haha Good luck to him finding a new guild.

You dont need vent/TS to raid EVER, I used to lead raids in EQ with anywhere from 40-60 ppl without using any kind of voice comm. Sure it might be easier to explain a fight in vent, or give instruction in TS but it most certainly isnt required.

We had a deaf player in our WoW guild for years. He was a very, very, good player and was an end-game raider just like everybody else in our guild. We told him his position just like everybody else (albeit through text) and between his wits, skill, and text spamming boss mods he performed as good as any other player. Other than not joining Ventrilo, you would never have known he was hard of hearing.

1. I never said it was required
2. When you have 40-60 people, things are a little different compared to 10-25. When you have 10 people, things are focused more on individual work done. In a 40m raid, you'll almost certainly have more than 1 of a class... in 10m, it's very possible you won't. That one person doing the right thing at the right time during a bad situation may be the deciding factor in whether or not the raid wipes.

That has nothing to do with needing voice comm, it has everything to do with someone knowing or not knowing their roll. I've been raiding since Kunark was released for EQ in 2000 (holy crap), sure voice comm comes in handy, but having voice comm isnt going to make a bad player any better.

Not really sure why people are thinking EQ experience relates here its apples and oranges. In EQ things are not near as fast paced as WoW. Honestly WoW benefits a hell of a lot more from voice comm than EQ.

Not that either one require it at all, just saying its pretty unrelated.

I have a strange hearing related issue. I am extremely sensitive to any sound above a certain level, have moderate-borderline severe hearing loss and tinnitus in both ears. I had all of this develop 4 years ago during my first year of college. Can't shower without earplugs, cannot run the water while doing dishes by hands for more than 5 seconds, use/be in a car without earplugs in one or both ears, walk comfortably on city street for more than a minute with earplugs, listen to any type of popular music for more than a minute, turned in an 360 because of painful fan noise. For a few days it hurt to talk and use a phone. The adjustment and life change was difficult. I cried many times. The world was no longer the same world for me as it had been for 19 years. What he is going through is even worse and I cannot imagine how it is for him. Basically, everyone needs to give him all the slack in the world for as long as he needs it. Not everyone will of course but if they lived one day of his life you can bet they would.

I do not play games/watch movies/watch tv with the sound on, needless to say. I only play left 4 dead online using the text chat. I miss out on some banter but i communicate. No game needs voice communication. All games need to have some type of closed caption feature like lf4d/half life series.

Regardless of the game voice comm isnt going to make a bad player good, and yes raid experience in any type of MMO carries over from game to game. The mechanics may not be the same but the basics never change. The raid experience I had from EQ1 carried over to WoW when I got into the original beta and still applies today in Cataclysm.

Not suprised... People act like the game is a job.. So happy I broke the habit a few months ago... Get sucked in way to easily. As for not being able to hear... If you want to be in a top guild no one is gonna stop to type in middle of battle :/

Some people are complete ++++s unfortunately, that's a part of life we have to deal with. I hope this guy gets help with hearing in the future because i can't imagine losing my hearing, would be hell. I've had many problems with my ears in the past, i'm only 23 but i'm on my 4th pair of grommets and in 10-20 years time i'm afraid i may become atleast partially deaf, so i feel for the guy, i've got it coming some day.

More current EQ raids are vastly different than what you may remember. Ever since Meldrath's Mansion, it is a very fast paced environment.

I dont know i have not played in years but the only thing that really carried over for me was "do what the damn raid leader says". Otherwise it was so different i spent more time unlearning what i had learned in EQ than anything.

But then again i was a cleric and healing in EQ compared to healing in WoW are so different its not even funny.

I did raid very shortly as a beastlord but that was also so different it wasnt even funny. I remember 90% of it was managing pet push 10% actual DPS. :p

Good to know. I still miss it from time to time but im so far behind in expansions i wouldnt pay for it. I do come back every time they offer a free return.

Haha, I had a beastlord VERY briefly, didnt take me long to switch back to tanking with my warrior or pulling/dps with my monk. (both Iksar and where I got leezard as a forum handle)

My wife was a cleric in EQ and she didnt care much for raiding n WOW either, so you probably have a point about the difference for that class.

I think I logged in once a couple years ago when they had a free week or something, it just wasnt the same
