I plan to upgrade my HD 5850 setup and I'm considering either a GTX 580 or HD 6970. The GTX 580 is either extremely expensive here (500€+) or nearly impossible to get at the moment so I'm leaning towards the AMD card.

Is there a viable 3D shutter solution available to use with AMD cards? I mean, they started talking about supporting 3D a year ago, still I could not find anything that is already purchasable apart from anaglyph methods. I did get a 120Hz display a while ago and really want to try out 3D gaming.

The answer is yes. The bad news is that AMD's 3D is only compatible with HDTVs or a few select 120hz monitors such as the Viewsonic featured here. So if you didn't get that particular monitor you'd have to sell your current 120hz and get that one for it to work with AMD 3D.
 
Also, please keep in mind that AMD's software solution is a third party program by iz3D and is not an actual part of the drivers like it is with Nvidia. Just saying this as you should be aware that software updates and what not are not in the hands of AMD and might cause complications. Not bashing or anything...I mean, it all works and everything...but it just doesn't seem like the best over all solution.
 
3d is a gimmick ;)

id rahter play my games at 120fps

but thats my opinion.

but if you are really intrested in using 3D the best option is still nvidia at this point.
 
3D should be done with Nvidia at this point for reasons above. But I also agree, 3D is a gimmick, and not worthwhile.

I do not consider HDTVs width HDMI 1.4 a viable option. Those can only support 720p/60 or 1080p/24 in 3D mode as far as I know, limited by HDMI.

120 fps is the reason I bought the display in the first place. But now that the option is there, I can just try it out. I'm willing to buy the Nvidia 3D vision kit just for this.

GTX 580 SLI would however be really expensive just for occasional 3D gaming. If the GTX 580 was available here, I would already have one by now, but I'm not going to spend 10-20% extra just because they are short on supply. Maybe GTX 560 SLI will be an option?

560GTX SLI would surely work, so would a pair of OCed 460GTX. any solution that will generate high frame rates. that or be willing to run at lower res and settings. in 3d the frame rates really make a difference.

I have to regularly reduce graphical features to obtain 120fps with my HD5850. But there is no problem, a fluid game is more important than every blade of grass.
