Dell U2311H

I think I might try and get a replacement for mine (A01) especially because of the buzzing sound.

Two more things though: is there any word on when A02 is supposed to be hitting the stores?

Also, should I really be getting another u2311h as a replacement? The thing that bothers me is that the IPS panels are supposed to display *true* colors - but how could I ever know if I will be seeing those true colors after calibrating my monitor? Just yesterday I tried to calibrate my monitor four times and it usually resulted in slightly dimmer display and perhaps more vivid/contrasted colors. But are those colors realistic? How will I ever know? What's the point of having an IPS panel then.....

I dont mean to sound like a dick; however, just look outside, at some grass at the park, maybe even some brightly colored flowers at your local super market. Then compare what you see with the colors on your monitor. Thats how you'll know. And more importantly, if YOU are happy with the colors then you've won. If you are not why pay a premium for an IPS panel. There are plenty of cheap TN panels on the market.

Btw, are these tests here still relevant today (it seems they are from like 2007...)? ---> http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/white.php#whitetest.png

Should these checkerboard patterns all be really clear, or is it fine if some of them (esp. the last couple of them) are barely distinguishable from the background?

If they can be seen, even if barely noticeable, you're doing pretty well. The last couple are meant to be at the very edge of what is visible.

Just got mine in yesterday. Pretty much perfect, though the blacks as always on LCD's are hard to get use to after using a CRT. All my tv shows I downloaded look like ass on them though. I need to find a good upscaling setting.

I will be getting my U2311 in a few days. The above talk is beginning to worry me. having spent all my time with TN Panels does the 2311 have to be calibrated before use? Can I use this monitor straight out of the box for general use?

On a black screen (well mostly anyways) one side of the screen has a purplish glow to it and the other white/yellowish glow (confined somewhat to the bottom left and right side of the screen).

I can see this when viewing straight on and the more I adjust my position vertically or horizontally the worse it gets. If I had my monitor lower I think the effect would be even worse.

The effect is most noticeable when it's darker in the room, but still noticeable in the light to a lesser degree.

Is this a tinting issue, backlight bleed issue or something else?

I thought IPS monitors were supposed to have better viewing angles, at least from straight on anyways. I'm sitting fairly close if that matters.

I have no means to capture the issue at the moment, to show a picture. I'm not sure it would show through if I could anyways.

I'm wondering if they are all like this and if it's a minor, moderate or a more extreme case I'm experiencing?

I'm not sure what to do at this point. If an exchange is just going to give me the same problem to a varying degree, it's probably not worth exchanging I'd gather.

It is normal to encounter some corner glow effect when seated at a typical distance. IPS has by far the best viewing angle stability of all LC modes.

I can confirm there is an orange/yellow tint on the bottom left corner. Slight purple on bottom right - looks more like a small glare. Very very slight orange/yellow tint at top right (this is due to angle I believe). When I move my head to the right, the orange/yellow tint goes from the bottom left, to cover the entire bottom half of the screen. If I tilt the monitor downwards, then it covers the entire screen. I can move my head to a point where the tint is uniform over 100% of the screen. It leads me to believe it's the manufacturing process and not a defect. The higher the brightness, the easier it is to see - backlight issue or just IPS glow? The brightness just adds more light/glow, and contrast just changes opacity - doesn't seem to actually change the color contrast between black/white - so I keep it at 100.

It's definitely sharper than my Samsung 23" TN panel. The colors are slightly better. More accurate? I don't know, it's about the same as my TN on Game mode. I really like Multimedia mode :) Seems to be no difference between Graphics -> Multimedia and Video -> Nature mode.

The thing is.. it doesn't seem to affect the colors like a TN panel does. With a TN panel, everything is gradiented due to it's viewing angle problem - but with this e-IPS.. it's only really noticeable if you try to look for it on a pure black screen. I can't tell on any other color, and the viewing angles are pretty great - NOT as good as h-IPS though - but you should already know that. It's kind of like a 5% dark shadow in 2/4 of the corners depending on angle. No big deal.

Perfectly good for gaming right out of the box. Played L4D2 within 2 minutes, and was noticeably better. I love it.

I've also noticed that the left side of the monitor seems slightly "dirtier" than the right one - you can notice this color non-uniformity especially on an all-white background, though you can notice it on certain other backgrounds as well...

Anyone else noticed it?

I guess the question is, how much is a normal amount? Will there be a different between monitors of the same model?

I see a fairly significant amount on each corner, it extends fairly far up. If it was just a tiny amount I would have never noticed really, but just in web pages, gaming, etc. I can see it in the corners on black screen.

I have to sit fairly close, but the closer I get the worse it is. I'm only about an arms length away from the screen, I'm wondering if that's why I'm seeing more?

The unit I sampled did have a bluer, darker left side. This kind of disuniformity is unfortunately possible.

The glow varies between panel model, but not between individual units. I strongly doubt that it varies between units. A problem that looks similar on a photograph is panel / backlight bleed which is apparently caused by pressure on a poorly seated LCD panel. This backlight bleed stays the same no matter the position and is considered a defect. In my experience the glow on these IPS panels is strongest on the angle constituting the bottom left area from a normal seating position. There is no glow perpendicular to the device nor within the 0,90,180,270 degrees off-axis viewing positions. Even from about 50 cm it should be possible to observe minor glow in the corners.

Not me. At least not yet...

As Whoisthisreally has mentioned, you're probably seeing the pretty poor backlight uniformity issue that the U2311H has. I have two of them and both have it, however it's very mild and only really noticeable on white or bright coloured backgrounds.

A lot of people in this thread have posted about it, the cool/blue tint on the left and warm/yellow tint on the right (i.e. left side darker, right side brighter). Some people probably wouldn't even have noticed the issue if they weren't told about it or some are just not particularly sensitive to it.

Both TFTCentral and ExtraHardware have the same problem as detailed in their reviews.

I assume there's no point in installing the drivers from the disk? I use 3 different operating systems anyway..

I see... It's pretty sad that such issues occur, and it's actually pretty easily noticeable that the left side is darker on a white background - just going to the TFT Central page you posted makes it pretty obvious. I'm going to take my laptop to a computer store today and plug it to a Samsung BX2450 as well as Dell U2311H and compare the two. Who knows, maybe I decide to take the Samsung instead. Heh.

I was all good to go and fine with the corner glowing when I discovered another issue.

While I was playing Assassins Creed I noticed like purple spots/blotches on the characters in the game a few times. I also noticed it later on some lower quality video I was watching.

Is this because of the purple tinting, or another defect of some kind? Anyone else have this issue or seen this before?

So... does anyone know if Dell is coming up with any holiday sales? Interested in this one but willing to wait to get it a bit cheaper...

Its quite cheap already. In fact its a steal, at the moment.
http://accessories.dell.com/sna/pro...=dellSearch&baynote_bnrank=0&baynote_irrank=6

I paid $249.00 sale price minus $50 coupon, which they allowed after a phone call. Cost me $199.00 (CDN), plus tax. I think the price is terrific considering a BenQ E2420 is $214 (CDN). An Asus VE278Q is $375 and a Asus VW 266H is $300. Those were my other choices. Luckily I happened on this Forum. Did not know about IPS and TN, a week ago.

Sorry, thought their Christmas sales would be all over the Continent. Don't know much about Dell or Monitors (always had a TN) so I hope I made the right decision.:)

can anyone give me the width of the U2311H when its in portrait mode?

Would you settle for the height of the monitor (without the stand) when it's in landscape? ;)

Dell has the various dimensions located here with the online manual. The various dimensions should be further down the page.

Actually, yes. Thanks so much, that was my bad. I went onto the specs sheet on the dell website, but it didnt have the value I was looking for. Thanks again.

I've been looking at this monitor for the longest time and wanted some suggestions. I do a lot of pc gaming and would like a monitor to provide good enough response/input times while providing the best picture it could possibly be in the u2311's price range (willing to go higher). I don't want to go any higher then 1920x1080 as I want to keep my video card purchases in check.

I am very very leery about the quality control issues this monitor seems to have so is there any similarly performing monitor at the same price range with less issues? I'm fine with any panel type, doesn't have to be IPS. Your monitor guru help would be most appreciated HardForumites.

For future reference or anyone else reading, you can find out the width and height of a monitor purely from the diagonal length (which is always given). Just put the diagonal length into one of these sites:

http://www.displaywars.com/23-inch-16x9-vs-24-inch-16x9

http://www.livephysics.com/ptools/screen-aspect-ratio-calculator.php

For the actual screen sure. I figured he wanted the dimensions of the entire monitor (bezel and all). That was just my guess though.

So I exchanged my u2311h for a new one, but it's pretty much the same as my previous one - the "dirty" left side of the monitor is still present. Pretty lame.

Is there any way to "fix" this issue? Some sort of calibration that would fix it?

Ya, having the bezel length as well really helped from the dell website. I am trying to determine if I can fit 2 Dell U2311H in portrait with my 24" TN monitor in landscape on my desk (my desk is fairly small, only 50.5" long). I am considering picking up a longer desk (possibly ikea jerker 63" version off craigslist) and having 3 Dell U2311H's in portrait and my 24" TN monitor in landscape. So having the width of the Dell U2311H in portrait really helped. Thanks again!

I just bought a rev 01 unit and here are some observations. There are based on VGA connection with a Matrox card, I might update if displayport will make difference.

I can't detect by eye even a slight panel uniformity defect when looking at solid colors. There is a very small left-right green-purple uniformity issue. I can only detect it if I really give it an effort based on some screenshots I found here.

Looking at the monitor from above (> 30 degrees) there is very noticeable purple/blue glow. Otherwise viewing angles seem good. Looking at solid black from a normal viewing angle there is a slight purple glow at bottom right and slight yellow/orange glow at bottom left. No backlight bleed.

The monitor does make some noise. It seems to vary by "scene". I am not sure if I am annoyed by it, it is quite small. Mostly detectable only by turning the monitor off and noticing it stopped. However, a monitor shouldn't make sound.

I very much dislike the anti-reflection coating on this unit! The surface looks very dirty with solid colours from any viewing distance. The dirt seems to have a pink hue. Has anyone managed to remove the coating - are there instructions somewhere? Is it a coating or a plastic screen? Yuck!

Here is what it looks like:

The grey grid is an aliasing issue in camera from the pixels, but otherwise it is quite accurate illustration of what it looks like.

I find the "IPS-glow" pretty frustrating. I just watched a movie and no matter how I sat in my chair (leaned back or not) there was always a golden glow in the lower left corner or even the right one. It is QUITE ANNOYING, esp. because the movie was not full screen, so there was vertical black space above and below it and the glow was noticeable.

Does it not bother you guys when watching movies etc???

You could try to turn the monitor facing a little upwards, it helps a bit on my unit. Personally I watch movies with a CRT TV. This is because software scaling a PAL/NTSC movie to LCD native resolution looks ugly to me and blacks look very ugly too. Besides true blacks, picture resolution and color clarity looks fantastic too with SCART RGB connection. Also one gets natural playback of interlaced material.

I tried turning the monitor upwards a bit, but it didn't help - it even worsened the situation..... I've really started considering getting a Samsung XL2370 or something of sorts instead.....

From your comments you really don't like an IPS monitor. I am still awaiting my first 2311. I'm beginning to get worried. At the moment I am using a BenQ E2420 and I like the monitor.

How are these dells i'm thinking of picking 3 up next year around income tax time to replace my acers tn panels only will be spending at the most 900 dollars.
