To be polite, Spike's Video Game Awards aren't very good, and they just seem to be getting worse. Hell, when is the last time they picked something you agreed with?

My colleague Rick Kissell, Variety’s in-house ratings expert, was kind enough to pull the numbers for me and the numbers show that for the fourth consecutive year, Spike has seen the audience for the VGAs shrink. 627,000 people watched the show – a 3 percent drop from last year’s installment. That works out to 20,000 fewer viewers for those who prefer hard numbers.

Spike is trying to spin the numbers but the truth is, 125th ranked Gossip Girl re-reruns draw 4x as many viewers than the VGAs. Ouch.

Maybe they should have slotted the VGA's on a better night?
I mean come on! They had the VGA's on at the same time as the UFC Pay-per-view was airing. It was the match between GSP and Koscheck. Of all fights to air against they chose the fight between the 2 coaches from their own show!
They were promoting The Ultimate Fighter all season. What did they think was going to happen with the VGA viewers on that night?

I watched the first few minutes which showed the intro and I was like wtf this isnt the oscars.

video games aside- spike is up there with MTV and E! in terms of worst channels on television. im sure the garbage content like 1000 ways to die that they usually air had something to do with people not watching. if i wanted to see boobs theres this thing called internet porn. if i watch TV i want to be entertained or learn something. spike offers neither.

I thought they already decided to quit making monitors with VGA inputs.

Yeah, you read the headline that way too.

I watched a live stream someone had until the Mass Effect 3 trailer and then I turned it off. Even Neil Patrick Harris couldn't make me watch it, especially since he was barely even trying after the opening. Can't say I blame him with the piss poor jokes he was given and with the unfunny hack Dane Cook getting more screen time then him. I wouldn't bother trying either.

The only reason to ever watch that travesty of a show that paints all gamers as alcoholics and stoners is for the "never-before-seen" trailers and teasers of future games. But you know what? Thanks to the internet even that reason is gone, because they all get posted onto Game Trailers just hours after their announcement.

I didn't watch it, but going back and looking at the results I can say I agree with at least several of the choices for winners.

The last I watched one, it was years ago. It was ridicules.

#1 The list of games seem to indicate that the best games, were from companies who gave them the most money. I think the one I saw had Xbox games only.

#2 The person who hosts it is a famous celebrity, who probably never played a video game ever. You wanna catch my attention, then get someone like a game developer, or James Rolfe. Someone relevant to gaming.

#3 Try to get special guests like John Carmack or Shigeru Miyamoto.

#4 If you're going to have hot girls running around, make sure they're dressed up as famous video game characters.

And the Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, People's Choice Awards, Country Music Awards, Video Music Awards, American Music Awards, and the Grammys, are all better reasons to interrupt your regularly scheduled sitcom reruns?

Spike has gotten so low brow even Jerry Springer seems high class compared to it. And I'm sure the games that got the most attention were the ones whose publishers coughed up the most advertising bucks.

To be brutally honest I never really realized that this thing was actually shown on TV. I always thought it was like a web cast or something.

When they didn't pick avatar as the best film at the oscars! I didn't like the film that won and thought that looked like a pile of over drama badly acted crap, but I found it funny that avatar didn't win.

Reasons like this travesty of a show is why I do not have a cable or sattelite tv subscription.

That show was unwatchable!! I recorded it and just fast forward to all the trailers. It didnt even seem like anyone rehearsed anything. The writing was bad and so were the stupid special effects they had everywhere. What a waste.

Better question is when is the last time I watched the VMA? The answer is NEVER!

Spike is... The man show without Adam Corolla and Jimmy Kimmel I see what you are going for there but it doesn't quite work, like Top Gear America.

Its too... something its just not right and that everything they do. Most of the shows in the pwoer block were better when they were TNN its still good but the hosts on Trucks, blah. The endless same 6 reruns of CSI are sickening to death, there is something with the sound on Spike that makes things sound odd. They are playing to the male audience but they are just missing the mark.

P.S. Don't get me started on G4

I don't know, Powerblock really hit a new low when they starting getting those college kids to build the cars...

what do you expect. they were garbage to begin with. all spike is shoving at you know are testerone induced crap that a 13 year year old would yawn now and look up porn on the interweb.

I agree that the timing sucked against the UFC. I've only seen the intro so far on the DVR. I railed against the VGA's when Batman Arkham Asylum won..... then I played the game and I was blown away by it. I did have an interest in their indie showcase, and they talked about Red Lynx and TrialsHD, I thought I'd give it a shot. I love that game! So, two wins does not a show make however.... and the intro was not compelling enough to keep me watching, maybe I'll get back to it. That being said, I am.... hopeful.

I'm also concerned about the trends.... I loved last year's Scream awards. And props to them, they introduced me to 'Let the right one in'

This year, pretty big letdown. Although I am impressed with who they can get to show up for star power!

At any rate, through judicious use of the fast forward, I can't believe it will be a total waste of time.

This. This. This.

Spike is one of the shittiest channels ever. I would never watch a single minute of this horrible horrible channel. It's just like G4, it's targeted to the mentally handicapped of technology / gamers / geeks.

I watched it, can't say I agree with a single winner...

bioware over blizzard as company of the year?
Neil Patrick Harris as spiderman for best male?
Red Dead Redemption as best game?

well maybe the last one fits, I loved every one of the games up for +++.. but I dunno
I know a lot of people who have never played RDR, while everyone I know has played ME2, CoD:BO, Halo and GoW3

and lets not forget the ones that make no sense at all, like RDR for best original game, when it's a sequel, so that's not very original... and best zombie game, compared to amazing games dedicated to nothing but zombie killing who didn't even get mentions.

To be fair NPH did do a good job as Spiderman. Everyone nominated for that award deserved it. Same with everyone nominated for the actress award.

My biggest issue with the VGAs? That ugly ass trophy. Who the hell would want to display that thing?

Spike is terrible, I haven't been able to stomach watching anything on that network in months. It used to be ok, but now it's just incredibly bad.

Avatar used its flashy CGI to distract you from noticing that the plot is painfully shallow, like a poorly written Disney movie with violence.

i love video games but come on, just the concept of a video game award show sounds very lame

I like music, but dont watch grammys or vmas. I like movies and tv, but dont watch the oscars, emmys, tonys, whatever the hell they are called. Same goes with video games.

The reason is, because the shows are shit and the awards are bogus.
