It is pretty cool to see companies do stuff like this, especially in these economic hard times. Damn, now I want a bike for Christmas too.

A company rep says the bikes, which were custom made for the home goods chain, were given out to the company's 12,400 U.S. employees as a way of saying thanks for "great results and great team work... It has been a good year for Ikea US (and Ikea Global as well)."

Pretty cool thing to do for people, even with Winter coming on. Early Christmas presents GO! :D

Being honest, I bet most of those employees would of preferred to have gotten the cash as a bonus. I know the company I used to work for went from cash bonuses and did something like this and everyone was just flat out pissed.

That said (obligatory ikea quality joke). If those bikes are like their furniture, they look cool but are all gonna break in 6 months. :D

Yes, like almost all things Ikea-related, the bike comes flat-packed and requires some assembly. I just hope they gave employees something better than those flimsy little wrenches to use.
lol

nice looking bike, but I wonder how it'll stack up against my K2 Zed 3.0 bike.

I'll probably give the Ikea bike to the 11 year old for Christmas.

If my christmas bonus was a bicycle I'd hari-kari myself. Give me cash or gtfo.

my gf got one, she's happy about it.

the rumour leading up to this was that it was gonna be a large flat-screen tv, because IKEA only said the gift was "big" and is something they'll start selling at the store. well, i bet most employees are unhappy it's not that, and instead some stupid thing you have to exercise for to make work. hahah

Not like IKEA, the biggest tax shelter... in the world, couldn't afford it. I'm sorry, IKEA has cheap furniture and all, but their financial practices are so damn shady.

-P

well the bike is likely worth more than the cost after all the discounts and incentives they got paying for them

Nothing in the article said they gave out bikes INSTEAD of bonuses. I love the instant negativity you see in internet posts, though.

This is almost as bad as getting lottery scratch tickets for a gift. Just give the poor bastards cash.

I was actually expecting them to get cheap tables and furniture that break easily.

People that get free stuff and then complain about it makes Christmas kitty sad!!

You get something for free and you're pissed? Right on.

Half my furniture is from Ikea. It's 10 years old and still in stellar shape. Nothing's ever broke in 6 months :D

Nothing employees get in corporate america is ever free, there is always a catch that ensures they pay for it somewhere. Sorry to come across as cynical but I have been on the receiving end of the elimination of christmas bonus's in favor of "Gifts" or my personal favorite "Incentive programs" for far too many years.

Let's say that bike cost around 100 bucks for Ikea to give out. I think most employees would rather have $50 in cash. Just saying.

Steve, you are probably wishing for an Eaton Roots type blower or a new set of drag slicks for Christmas. You arn't fooling me............ :)

Jesus people. Some companies only give bonuses to their senior management and CEO. I've been with the same large company for 6 years and have never gotten a Christmas bonus.

last year she received a restaurant gift card for Christmas, we had a nice dinner out.
this year it's a 26" mountain bike by made by Kent.

Ikea is rolling out some "green" initiatives, they are a very green company and have had initiatives in place for years to help the environment. they are also concerned for employee's physical and mental health.

The bike thing is an effort to get people driving less. which is good for health and the environment.

it's a $200 bike and everyone received one.

any employees who didn't want or need a bike, Ikea is donating the bikes to a local boys and girls club, at least our store is.

My wife and i both have bikes, but a good friend of ours just had hers stolen from her garage, so we gave it to her.

it's a great help to someone who has helped us out quite a bit over the years,
and sure, $50 would've been nice.

but the bike was nicer.

Most Ikea's I have seen are some distance from residential areas and are on busy freeways. I don't know if I would want to pedal to work under those circumstances....

Do they have to put the bikes together with really terrible instructions and wood pegs?

my gf also said they got bonuses recently, so this is in addition to that, at least for her and her coworkers...

ashtabula one piece cranks on an adult bike, lol.

That is just about the cheapest adult bike you can possibly build.

and whats with the cut seat tube to make way for suspension, but a solid tube where the suspension spring would be? some bike company made a bunch of "oops" frames, fixed them up so they could be used and sold them extra cheap, because walmart probably wouldn't even take them.

I was always fond of the company, but I'm a proud supporter of Ikea. Maybe it's because the company is not US based... regardless, I am appalled.

So, what did they do for any handicapped employees? I mean, maybe some corporate or behind-the-scenes personnel (not retail) are in wheelchairs.

I used to work at a place where our Christmas bonus was a ham. Now, I don't eat red meat but it was take the ham or get nothing, so I always took it and donated it to a local shelter. At least I knew it would be used and appreciated.

I'm saying if I were to receive no bonus and you offered me a bike that would be on ebay / craigslist as I tried to turn it into cash asap.

I'd rather $100 cash than a bicycle worth $150 any day. And granted those bicycles that have a price tag of say $150 cost the company $25 to make.. so that's kind of what I'm getting at. It's a way to cheap out on something that could better fit everyone's needs (by doing cash).

People in wheel chairs already have wheels. Maybe IKEA just bought them spinners?

Ham is pink so you should be good to go!
