What Do You Want from Windows 8?

Through various sources, including Microsoft itself, we have glimpsed small peeks of the next incarnation of Windows. This is a good time to lay out exactly what tech oriented users typically would like to see be included, left out or invented in the release of Windows 8. The linked article gives some good insight to what we may or may not see in the Windows 8 operating system.

So, when will Windows 8 make its debut? One of the slides in the leaked discussion presentation indicates a beta release in the summer of 2012, with a full release at the end of the year. This would be a greatly accelerated release schedule for Microsoft, which has previously released new versions of Windows every five years or so.

WinFS would be nice. Finally.

What is this guy smoking?

Shouldn't be too confusing half of them have the year in the product name

95, 98, 2000, me, xp , vista, 7

2.14average release time frame with xp to vista being the odd man out.

Taking the most recent sample of vista to 7 would also negate the statement, 3 years.

:grumpy:

i want it to work and not crash, not bogging down after installing my apps and games would be nice to.

I want operating systems to stop being so much like these new phones, there is no need to release one every couple of years (or every few months it seems like with these phones)

Well besides it having to be FREE cough cough ( Linux ) id like to see the msconfig folder go away still to many apps can get installed and i know how to remove them but it should be harder for anything at all to install there ( spyware) i remove it ALL the time from there first .Thats prolly where windows is slow to boot from to with all that crunk in there pre loooooooading.....

Native blu-ray playback and continuing to improve multi-monitor support would be my two biggest items.

Better multi monitor taskbar. So you don't have to rely on nv surround/eyefinity to make a multi screen bar, just does it with a yes/no. I need 50 applications open at once.
+deep color
+option for multi screen wallpapers and that movie thing that vista ultimate has :D

This special code that if windows 8 comes in contact with a windows xp/ie6 machine it causes the XP machine to set on fire.

+2tb drive things by default
MSE by default
MSN by default (again)

Change in the licence for windows that you can install to a computer with more than 1 physical CPU. Plus on a different motherboard if the drive is the same for OEM licenses.

Tinker.

So you want windows 7..since it already does that quite nicely. Actually Vista with SP2 does as well but no need to bother with Vista with 7 being that much better. Time to get off XP man, it was never a good OS to begin with. :D

Back OT.

The main thing I want to see Win8 do is quit supporting 32 bit only. I am sorry but 64 bit has been out long enough it is time to cut the umbilical. Nearly all CPU's being produced are 64 bit and any that aren't need to be EOLed. We are never going to move forward if we keep hanging on to legacy crap. Simply put, make Windows 8 specifically for the next generation of computers. Windows 7 is more then enough to carry most current and older hardware well beyond their EOL. A line needs to be drawn.

Honestly, I can't think of one damned thing I require that Windows 7 doesn't already do extraordinarily well as it is. SP1 will be out soon, might address some performance issues but other than that, I am happy with Windows 7.

It is the finest operating system Microsoft has ever produced. If Windows 8 is better, I'm gonna be hard pressed to imagine why.

qft. If there's ever going to be a permanent leap from 32-bit to 64-bit only, Windows 8 has to lead the charge. Windows 7 can cater to 32-bit if needed

-I want it to be 64bit exclusive.
-I want an overhauled Windows Media Center. Top to Bottom.
-Multiple desktops
-Start bar that spans across multiple monitors

An even better way of integrating gaming. A mode that turns off everything but the essentials needed for gaming.

What game are you playing that is being bogged down by the OS on a reasonable system? It isn't like we're trying to cram everything into 256MB of RAM anymore and need to clear space for gaming to prevent swapping. Most games still don't take advantage of all the hardware that is present so I'm not sure what you want. A naked OS is not going to make gaming faster.

I want Windows 8 to have the same layout of the Control Panel and various other settings that Windows XP has. They added more clicks and complicated a lot simple tasks when they re-arranged a lot of things in Vista and carried the bad layout right on over to Windows 7. And yes, I am still using Windows XP daily, but I have worked on enough on Vista and 7 systems to see the deficiencies in the changes made.

Yeah, I don't see what the issue is here. I have all kinds of stuff running on my sig rig, Sql Server, IIS, Apache, etc. and even record TV while gaming, nothin' slows down. Even lesser machines can run all this stuff with enough memory no sweat while gaming.

You get used to it very quickly and I prefer it now.

How about a full featured Disk defragmenter tool FFS? You know like system file management and swap file management. You know, something usable. How about VNC on every version? Not just the versions for people who don't have computer problems.

You guys already said Native BD support and such. A GUI to add and remove Windows services wouldn't hurt. A minimal installation option for embedded systems. Try to keep the services modular so one doesn't depend on the other so much. IMO, that's where Windows fails compared to Linux.

They didn't add anything, you just don't get how Windows 7 works, so I'll make the entire OS dirt stupid simple:

- Click (or press) the Start Button (or the Windows key on your keyboard 'cause I'm pretty sure it's got one in this day and age)
- Type the first 3 letters of what you're looking for, say for example you'd like to adjust your Mouse settings, type m-o-u and wait a half second or so, there it is, on the menu, right there and waiting for ya.
- Highlight the option you want with the cursor keys or the mouse, press Enter on the highlighted option or click
- Done.

If it takes you more than 2-4 seconds to do this, something is wrong, and it works for anything in Windows 7 that can be accessed by any Start menu path. ;)

Bring back remote indexing of a network drive that isn't Windows Server.

(No, MS; your removal of that feature is never going to make my replace an existing file server with one that runs Windows. Now give it back.)

The only thing I want is for it to look and act like a desktop OS and not a cell phone OS.

I want better info on things that are installed surreptitiously so that I don't have to spend hours of my time trying to find out if some new "feature" is safe or a trojan. Couple of examples would be 'VITUALAPP/DIDLOGICAL' under Windows credentials and Protection Service from 3rd party company. When I see things like that it makes me see red because I have to go search to find out just what they are and it is making me waste my fucking time frequently.

~95% market share vs ~.08% isn't anything I'd call a failure.

- Disk defragmentation is automagic in Windows 7, do the worst you can and it'll probably never go past 5%. I'm on the same installation for 9 months now, with a ton of stuff installed and I'm hard core when it comes to moving shit around, copying stuff, deleting it, downloading it, compressing it, extracting it, and I have never done a manual defrag and I just checked the fragmentation - it's 2% which is where it was the last time I checked in early August.

- The MSC is a GUI to add and remove (remove?!?!?!) services.

- You manage the page file from a GUI also in Advanced System options.

- VNC is an app owned by somebody else - Remote Desktop works just damned fine.

- Embedded systems use Windows 7 Embedded, duh.

Should I go on?

Well maybe if you didn't use "God Mode" it wouldn't be an issue. ;)

It doesn't add anything to Windows 7 - it's just a shortcut to some aspects that are easily accessible already with the same concept I mentioned in the post above:

Stop freakin' clicking for everything, it's passe these days and unnecessary. If there's something in Windows 7 you want to access, hit Start, type a few letters, WHOOP THERE IT IS!!!

Really, I am pretty happy with windows 7. The only thing I'd like is better multi-monitor features, like extended taskbar and wallpaper. Native Bluray support would be ncie, but a WMC revamp would be better. Just make something like MPC-HC with native bluray it would be perfect.

Don't release a crap O/S every damn 2 years for starters. Vista comes out, 'bitch/complain festival', so quick fix that with Win7, and just a few years later comes 8? Does this remind anyone else of EXPENSIVE/'JUNK' video games that require 6,000 patches on release day? What's next? Windows 8-2.5 (for a steal price of $120 because they only changed 3 features from 7, or 8 for that matter)

Might be good, might be a waste of money. Time will tell, but until [H] does their thing; my money is staying in my wallet.

Blu-ray licensing is considerably more expensive than the old MPEG2 stuff for playing DVDs, so if Microsoft gets around to it, it'll be a big surprise to me. They'll probably do it, however, given that some folks want it. I still think it'll be a few more years before Blu-ray really either catches or dies, right now it's just not doing as well as DVDs did in the same span of time when they first came out.

If you have nothing constructive to add I suggest you STFU instead of pretending you are a computer Guru.

64-bit exclusive, new filesystem and very non-bloated so it runs well on relatively weak computers like Intel Atom netbooks.

All that was said above plus this: The end of the archaic registry. The registry is prone to exploits and unwarranted modification by malware and the like.

There are better ways to do this (and efficiently) and it's present in Linux and OSX.
