I am going with an i7 1336 socket mobo and I need a cooler for it. I currently have a thermalright 120 extreme on my old rig and it has been flawless. Is thermalright still the way to go?
suggestions?

Thanks.

Thanks I'll check them all out.

The AC 64 is a joke....At least I hope, its an old 92mm cooler that I don't think supports anything newer than the 775 socket. First question though, whats budget on this? And whats end goal? Right now if you want best air cooler you will prob be looking at the Thermalright Silver Arrow, or the Venomous X. There are other more "budget" coolers on the market that get very close, but these are pretty much at the top right now.

So OP, what is your budget so this may or may not be a factor of being the best or getting very close? If you are okay with the Venemous X then it looks like you have a fairly open budget.

Depends on what you want and what you are willing to pony up.

Noctua NH-D14 is awesome and trades blows with the Thermalright Silver Arrow/Cogage Arrow. Both are massive compared to most other heatsinks out there and are simply amazing in the way of air cooling. With good airflow, the NH-D14 can be passive.. not sure about the Arrow though.

There's also the Prolimatech Megahalems or Mega Shadow and Venemous X (previously suggested and a great heatsink)

Could also take a look at the Corsair H50/H70.

In the middle range, people love the Cooler Master Hyper 212+ from what I've read. I've seen this thing on sale for $25 or so.

Budget is a big factor here, and as skizzled points out, the Hyper 212+ is a great bang for your buck cooler, and I have used the NH-D14 and performed rediculously, but is huge and heavy.

The corsair A70 can be had for $33 after rebate. That seems like a pretty killer deal.

It seems like we're hitting a wall these days with overclocking. Every decent tower cooler seems to be able to cool enough to let you hit other limits (voltage, inherent CPU limits, fsb, etc). So find the best deal and go with it, IMO. I think the A70 is far and away the best deal to be had right now.

Yeah I remember having an extremely loud (7000RPM) $70 HSF and struggling to get my XP1900+ from 1.6 to 1.9ghz. :) Now I have a $30 HSF that I can't even hear, and it easily gets my CPU from 3 to 4ghz.

The only thing that hasn't changed is stock HSF's still suck. :p

I run the CM 212+ and while I don't overclock (intel mobo :( ), the heatsink is fantastic and reduced fan need makes it very quiet. I plan on OC'ing my next setup when I upgrade using this heatsink.

Yup. Heatpipes were a game changer. Simple copper couldn't conduct heat fast enough to make a massive sink effective, so the only way to increase cooling was with an extremely fast and loud fan.

I can't wait till we get vapor chamber blocks instead of pure copper bases for consumer CPUs - it should hopefully tame the 2.5lb+ or gtfo race a bit.

Hasn't Intel already done that with this heatsink back a couple of years ago with the extremes?

ignore that its Frostytech, they just had the nice cutaway pics showing the chamber setup. It is odd that there aren't a couple of knockoffs around on newegg already.

Zalman 9900 MAX, I have a Zalman 9900A myself and it kicks ass. It's literally silent, it seems to get a lot of hate around here though. :(

While it doesn't compete in the bang for the buck catagory, it definately cools great while being silent like you said, and it also stays out of the way of tall RAM and doesn't weigh too much.
