I'm surprised there are no kinect threads. Is everyone too busy playing?

I'm curious too. A lot of reviews seem to be leaning more towards the positive.

So far from Giant Bomb's live stream I'm not seeing anything that makes me want one, especially for $150 plus $50 per game.

It'll take quite a few really good games to persuade me to get one. I prefer just relaxing with a controller in my hand when I game.

£130 in the UK when it gets released (or $211 straight conversion !)............fock that!!

Yeah. I'd need a lot of good single player games because the only way to play MP here would be to stand on my bed cause there is no where to move it out of the way and even if there was I wouldn't.

No option for something like "maybe... I'm going to wait and see first" ???

No plans on getting one, but if there were to be some kind of killer app I'm sure I'd reconsider. I'd dare say there are more reasons to get a 3DTV than Move/Kinect right now :p

Looks like I can't edit it after people have voted.
the poll was sort of meant to be a joke to get people talking.

I snagged one at a midnight launch last night. So far, the tech works as advertised. Not once did the camera, my avatar or anything on screen 'not work'. No jittering arms legs or unresponsiveness. I should add that I was playing in very low ambient light as well. Due to this, the only slight downside was blurry photos during Adventures photo snap shots. Low light + long exposure = blurry so I can fix that by turning on a few lights. Right now all I have is the pack-in Kinect Adventures. First game I tried was Rally Ball, which is that red ball/brickbreaker style game we've see demoed for the past year. I chose this because I figured it was the shittiest one, and I wanted to see the pitfalls (if any) of Kinect, first and foremost.

To my surprise this game was damn fun, and I mean that. Fun. The controls are precise, in and out of games. Voice commands worked as I expected and I was able to quickly swype between items/movies in Zune with ease.

After getting a few achievements in Free Play I went online. Matchmaking paired me with another player and we played mutliple modes in the same game. It was a blast, I felt being able to play online for these types of casual games brings a whole other element that Nintendo completely failed to tap into. I think in time, this will become a standout feature when discussing motion control in general. Xbox Live layered atop Kinect really brings it do another level. In addition to competing online at how well/fast you can press buttons on a controller, the user can now compete physically. Being an active person myself, it sort of tapped that physical competitiveness inside me.

Overall my experience thus far has been quite positive. People looking to point and laugh at the tech are going to find themselves with nothing to laugh at, and thats because Kinect works as advertised. Whether or not you choose to laugh at people playing the games is another thing. However the important thing to keep in mind is that having fun is part of the formula, and I play games to have fun.

I'm going to pickup both Dance Central and Kinect Sports tonight, since both got good reviews. Wife and I will likely be playing this on our off nights in between other games. My advice for skeptics is to keep an open mind, give the product a shot when you can and come to your own conclusion.

Don't let the colorful software distract you, underneath it all seems to be a pretty solid, fun experience.

edit. The only issue I see with Kinect is the space requirement. While I was able to find ample room I believe some customers may struggle to do so.

Looks like I can't edit it after people have voted.

Would be nice if a mod could edit the poll to give more balanced and realistic polling options.

damn, that means that im the second one here to cop one??? Played kinect adventures with my son and it was a blast. And my wife walked in and saw us playing, and she had to sit and soak in what she was seeing..

Yeah, kinect might work if you have a large living room. You need 16feet of empty living room space for 2 players, and that's barely enough. But reports are pretty dismal for a new product launch. Game reviews are sitting down at 70% and below (with dance being the exception at a low 80%), and the tech doesn't work as advertised: you can't navigate through the menus/movies with hand waggling unless it's in Zune. No netflix support. No USB/local net support.

Dunno where you heard 16, but the manual for Kinect says 8.

Wife had to have it. It's pretty fun so far. My 3 year old loves it. Easy for him to pick up games etc... I'm thinking it was worth it with how much fun he's having with it. We only have the pack in game so far. The Kenictamls game looks right for his age for $60 though gonna hold off on it. Doesn't look worth the cash atm.

I'm digging the menu system and motion controls for the xbox though.

If that source is your friend, then you need to erase his number. You only need 8ft max. The tech does work as advertised, and its actually fun. My son lives it, I had a blast tonite, and my wife can't wait to try it out. also you must consider that it its a casual device, so I only expect family like games. To me this is literally the wii on steroids, without the controllers.

I'm having a blast with it, too. I snagged one at lunch -- they were sold out everywhere, but I found one in stock at K-Mart (which, btw, you get a $25 coupon for any game when you buy the Kinect). I got it home and realized I didn't have anywhere to put it -- I have an LCD on a wall. Under that, I have a small shelf with my center channel, and under that is my subwoofer. I ended up setting it on a tray for now after I was out scouring the town looking for a wall mount for a couple hours (couldn't find one).

It works, and works well. There is (for me) a slight lag in the controls which made it difficult to get the controls down (I kept missing the balls in the breakout games). Once I figured it out, though, it worked like a champ.

Bought one on an impulse buy yesterday, when Amazon had them back in stock and with release day delivery. Gotta say it was better than I expected. Wish it had Netflix support, but to be honest I'll be using my PS3 for Netflix, at least until the 360 supports 1080 res and 5.1 channel for Netflix.

Had a friend over and everything worked fine with both of us playing. Took a snapshot to show the space I'm dealing with. Between the couch and TV is 8 ft. Had to move the coffee table :( (You can see where the coffee table was sitting...). I have plenty of space in the back of my living room, so I may move the couch back another foot or two.

One thing I'm really bummed about is there is no way to attach the Kinect on the top of the TV without buying a mount. So I have it sitting on my center channel, which is okay when standing up, but gets in the way when I'm sitting on the couch. Will probably just buy some blocks of wood to raise the TV a half a foot.

Overall I'm not disappointed in the Kinect, but I'm not completely satisfied... yet. The way Microsoft is backing the Kinect, I have confidence in them that they will release some worthwhile stuff for it.

I'm surprised you are surprised. This is the [H], not the !

Seriously though I don't think many people on this forum are terribly interested in Kinect.

I got mine today around 4:30 and I payed it until 9PM. I picked up kinect sport, kinectimals, and Dance Central along with the pack-in Kinect Adventures. Dance central is definitely the must have. My kids love kinectimals and Kinect sports. Kinect adventures is fun as well. You need space. Need to be 8ft from the screen to be in the optimal area.

Anyone know how to do a private match in Kinect Sports with people on your friends list?

Ill definately get one when its £70 or less new, i think there will be a lot of arguments with house proud wives in the UK (i think were known to have smaller living rooms in UK) to get that coffee table in the living room. fortunately i dont have the space problem, i just have the price problem! if we didnt have the space and the coffee table was in the way id get the middle finger!!

I like the Joystiq Living room vs kinect article:

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/04/kinect-vs-our-living-rooms-a-survey/#continued

I'll be picking up kinect for christmas. Just too many opportunities for fun especially with young kids.

Where's the option for "I live in Europe and I'm a second class citizen"?

I have a buddy who pretty much buys everything (good, bad, indifferent) so I hope to give it a shot over Christmas. I still don't plan on getting one sans a killer app, but that doesn't mean it can't be fun. Wii Sports and Tiger Woods are a total blast here and there...so I'd assume the Kinect is probably similar.
I can imagine getting a little tipsy and playing that dancing game should be a good time :)

Got it from Amazon with the xbox slim. I'm happy with both of them. I was worried about it being problematic given that I use a ceiling mounted forward projecting projector. It didn't have any problem with it.

As another user noted my Kinect Adventures pictures were a tad blurry because of the low room lighting. The pictures were clear enough however to show my idiotic grin in all of them - so apparently I was having a great time.

I was happy enough that while I was transferring the eight billion rockband songs from the 120 drive over to the 250 I went out and picked up Dance Central. I've never been interested in any of the DDR iterations - and my music taste runs more along the lines of Rock than R&B... but I had a great time moving my two left feet to the music.

I was a little disappointed that the xbox vocal commands didn't have wider application - but I imagine it will mature. That is the whole question of course though - will there be enough interest for the development to follow. I'd rather it did succeed and have time to mature (and thus I threw my money behind it instead of waiting to see) but if it doesn't - I will still have had a great time with it. I don't regret either of the stage kits I bought for RB2 even though RB3 currently doesn't support it. Though I'm not throwing them out, I'll just pop them over to the PC and let it do the work instead - as well as pick up a sound sensitive moonflower light. Yes - I do have a wee bit of an RB addiction, but I've come to grips with it.

So - while there are no "killer apps" yet - I'm happy with it and hope to see it grow - but will have fun with it either way.

some pretty scathing reviews, dont think im in for one yet.

I grabbed one on impulse seeing it at a Bestbuy, so far it's alright. I have a very cramped space; I'm just over 6 feet back max when standing and another foot or so back farther when sitting as the couch and the wall are there. For people wondering about space and distance it works, but barely. I have a small 'ledge' going around the wall behind the TV so I placed the Kinect up there on top of an old motherboard box since it was thin enough and had to use some tape to anchor the box from falling off (yes it looks crappy but for now it's the best I can do) so it's up 6ft and looking downish a little. As a result I cannot finish the calibration for the 'Face Sign In" part as it wants you to do certain poses and I can't walk back to step 'back' on the tic-tac-toe grid.

Despite that, I can do the menu hand gestures fine sitting on the couch and the mic works fine too of course. My complaint with the menu is that it's NOT the entire dashboard but a smaller Kinect screen with 7 options or so. I wanted to flip thru to my networked drives to launch a video or play music like that but no go. Zune is an option in the Kinect mini dashboard screen BUT you only have three options while in motion mode; Movies, TV and Play Local Media which is just the videos on the 360's hard drive. UG. As soon as I picked up the controller, confirmed I was going to use that then all the option options popped back up...and I guess they got rid of the networked/USB options altogether in Zune for this Dashboard update? Lame!

I didn't get around to trying Adventures, that will be for later. I tried the MSN webcam portion but nobody was online or not away to test it. I noticed the quality it was showing of me was NOT good though, like an old $10 logitech webcam. Is that because I have a classic style 360? I mean the cheap POS cam I have in my Acer laptop lid was much better quality!

Overall I'd vote, "Yeah I got it, meh it's alright" with that webcam quality thing being my main, "WTF?!" part.

I checked Futureshop's return policy and figured I could try one for 30 days and return it if not satisfied.

I must say, first of all, it works as advertised. As a sidenote, I'm brown and it works for me...

I wasn't so much interested in the games as I was curious about the tech...

Voice commands are cool and work fine (I heard this morning on Feedback that apparently it does support Netflix...haven't tested it myself tho...) and gestures work fine as well...

I haven't tried the chat function but people say it's cool and works well...

I do agree that a mounting appartus sold separatly is kinda lame, but I'll find a way around it I'm sure...

All in all, great piece of technology, which works well (unlike the Move) and provides a decent amount of fun...

I will say that this is not for everyone tho, for now at least...

Seems to be pretty much in line with the Wii and Move launches. Some good stuff, some average stuff and a bunch of shite stuff.

That was always horseshit... seems people just wanted to try and latch on to something to lol at. "lolololol, Kinect only works if you're white lololol"

One thing thats fucking rad about this device is the configuration software available. I wasnt too pleased with how far back I had to stand. Low and behold it was because of how low my Kinect was and the manual angle I applied. So I relocated it above my TV, angled it down.. ran the Kinect configuration tools and dial the goddamn thing in PERFECT.

I was able to move another 4 ft closer to my TV, allowing me to restore my living room to its original state and play. This was a turning point for me, now I'm greatly pleased with the device since I no longer need to move furniture to play.

Pro tip : Spend some time in the configuration tools to really get Kinect dialed into YOUR living room, instead of the opposite. Microsoft should be praised for giving us this kind of control, I honestly thought I was stuck with the original/out of box setup.

:D

The poll options suck.

I will get one in the future but none of the games I have seen really appeal to me. I am sure one will come along that will and then I will get it.

Fuck Kinect, that pc setup looks alot more interesting! :D

If you move your Kinect above your TV, it looks like it'll even be back another 18 inches. Doing so means you wont have to play so far back. I'm telling you, try putting it above your tv and re-calibrating it. :D
