Microsoft Windows Live Essentials

I decided to update Movie Maker etc. to the 2011 versions offered by Windows Update. I see hardly any difference in Movie Maker features but the most annoying thing is that Microsoft have deemed it necessary to sign into Windows Live just to upload a video to YouTube from within Movie Maker. They also have a Windows Live ID Service and Windows Live ID Service Monitor running in the background.

Another thing I noticed before even updating to 2011 version is that if you use Windows Live Photo Gallery to edit a photo Microsoft is assigning an ID number to the properties of the file.

I also saw a video yesterday of Balmer proclaiming that we all want "The Cloud" and that they have enough talent to ensure our privacy. Like fuck, they can't even make IE secure so there is no way they can make cloud computing secure.

I need Live ID for some games but no fucking way do I want it running all the time and integrated into any other programs I use. What douchebags.
 
I installed it and declined the LIve sign in options. I can manually upload to youtube no problem.
 
I didn't see any Live options, just went to upload a video direct from MM to youtube and it asked me to sing in to Live. But that doesn't help with my concern about the ID number they are assigning to files edited with their Live software or the two Live services that are always running in the background. Sounds like a way to trace a file to the user if they breaks any laws so I uninstalled Live Essentials 2011 which removed the services. When I got o Microsoft update now it offers me both the old versions and the new 2011 versions so if I want to use the old MM I still can. But I think I am going to find a free alternative to MM that is not so nosy.
 
If you upload a video to YouTube, it's attached to your account anyway, and they can trace it nonetheless.

I know but I just don't like the whole concept of Live and only use it because I am required to for a couple of games I own. I refuse to use it for anything else.

I hear you there. I noticed the two new services running after installing it. Don't understand why so many services and useless stuff is installed with good software. Think you can disable those services though.
 
And Live will still work if you do? If that is true then exactly what are those services for? I use Thunderbird for email and it is going to stay that way. I just need a free alternative for MovieMaker now because I did use that app on occasion. Don't need their Photoviewer app either.

it's useless to most folks. I just stopped and disabled the service. if you want you can set it to manual then it won't start up unless called by a program.
 
Live Mail suits my needs just fine. I had everything installed from the start and started dropping off apps as I went on. Only thing I have left from the suite is Live mail.

I've never seen Live Mail in action but friend of mine installed it and complained that it is way more than just email now so I told him to get rid of it and use Thunderbird.

Windows Live is a suite of apps. If your friend installed "it" they likely installed the whole Live suite which yeah is way too much. I have Mail, Messenger, and Photo Gallery. Live Mail 2011 is kinda nice, has the ribbon and they tweaked gmail IMAP access over the previous version so it works faster and smoother. Tho Live Mail is really designed for Hotmail accounts.
 
He was talking about the changes just to the email app and not all the other apps you can get too. I have 2 Hotmail accounts but just use the web version login. Even that is bloated with loads of "added" features, and God forbid if you ever want to delete an account. I tried to delete a really old one and had to jump through hoops to do it and then at the end of the process it informed me it couldn't delete the account.

I use the free fastmail.fm mostly now anyway and Hotmail is just for my GFWL account.
 
Yeah, I did not see any "Live Options". They may mean "Live Essentials" which does install the services.
 
Totally agree with OP. I find it terribly annoying when companies try to strong arm you into tracking and IDing and cataloguing every little thing you do on the PC. I think most people don't even use all those features. It's more bloatware.

Ummm...I guess that means you are either running IE6 still, or having been paying attention since IE7. Or, you just don't know what you are talking about, and fall into the "I'm with the cool kids who bash Microsoft" crowd.

You may call them douchebags, but I happen to like the new Live Essentials 2011. I have files, e-mails, contacts, favorites all synced across three computers, completely free...just like my corporate information. The apps work very well, and I am definitely getting my money's worth from my Live subscription....considering it is totally free.
