Apple announced its fourth quarter financial results today and, get this, the company sold more iPads than Macs.

Apple sold 3.89 million Macs during the quarter, a 27 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 14.1 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 91 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 9.05 million iPods during the quarter, representing an 11 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter. The Company also sold 4.19 million iPads during the quarter.

The cheaper the item, the more it sold. Not a real big deal. Impressive numbers though.

Not surprising, I do see the day were the Mac could become almost irrelevant to Apple.

Apple's the third largest vendor of PCs in the U.S. as of this moment. Interestingly, it's been suggested that the iPad is actually directly responsible for the Mac's recent market share gains:
“Apple’s influence on the PC market continues to grow, particularly in the U.S., as the company’s iPad has had some negative impact on the mininotebook market. But, the halo effect of the device also helped propel Mac sales and moved the company into the number three position in the U.S. market,” said Bob O’Donnell, IDC vice president for Clients and Displays.
Mac is still a pretty big part of Apple. I don't see that changing any time soon.

scary thought on how many people run out and buy subpar products cause it looks cool and lacks features.

Not a surprise to me at all. I have absolutely no intentions of buying a Mac desktop/notebook, but I bought an iPad. Simply put - I can get cheaper things to do what I want when it comes to mac desktop/notebooks vs the competition, but right now there's simply nothing with the qualities of the iPad below Apple's price for the iPad.

The only feature I can think of is Flash (and there's even a version of that for jailbroken iPads, but it makes HTML5 videos a little flaky and as it turned out few of the regular sites I go to use Flash for important things). Simply put - my notebook doesn't come close to the portability and comfort of my iPad. (no heat, no noise, and a solid 10 hours that you actually get unlike a lot of notebooks that claim up to 10 hours and deliver far less). It doesn't have any design problems like the iPhone 4 keeps having pop up either.

The lack of USB really limits the device in my eyes. I would never buy a tablet without the ability to import files, or, if I had to, connect it to a printer. Just having the option is worth it.

You can print from an iPad, you photocopy it! Haven't you seen that news thing...

I still don't understand the draw of the i-pad. It just doesn't seem all that useful too me. Sure it's a neat toy, but other than blowing a good chunk of change on a neat toy I don't see the point.

Then you my friend have common sense, I'm sorry to break it to you so harsh. :(

Not all of us have that horrible affliction though, 4.19 million to be exact! ;)

I like the iPad but would never buy one because I would not want to be locked in. I like the idea of having a small tablet like device to carry around the house but I feel like iOS has severe limitations and is generally too locked. I want run things my way.

Thats absurd, why would you want to customize your experience on a device you paid hundreds for? Just ridiculous...

I know a lot of people that have an iPad for business. They use it for note taking, and for easy access to email and files when away from their desk. There's just nothing else even close once it comes to form factor and battery life for the price.

Get all that on my phone thnx.

If I need to take notes I'm either using a notepad or a laptop, not some touchscreen crap.

The iPad really isn't that good of a note taking device, a Tablet PC with an active pen is MUCH better overall and unlike a plain old note pad handwritten notes can be searched just like regular text without any type of explicit conversion, this is a must have feature for any real note taking device.

I thought the iPad was a waste until I bought one. I have a 45 day and no restocking fee deal with Best Buy so I thought what the heck. Bought the 16 gig version (i.e. cheapest) to trial it out.

It is an amazing media consumption device. It is much more than a bigger iPhone.

These are my thoughts and needs on the device. Yours will be different. I understand that, do you?

1. Reading on it is such a pleasure. I use it for pleasure reading and journal articles (work related). It is much easier than lugging around a bunch of books. I also have a Kindle, and the color screen and ability to resize on the fly makes it so much better (in the arena of reading only). It is back lit, so I can turn off the bedroom light and read. That's easier on the wife.

iBooks is a great app, on par with the Kindle app.

Sure I can't read it in bright sunlight, but chances are I'm not going to want to read anything out by the pool. Nor do I work outside

OMG, reading comics is the best on the iPad.

2. The battery life is very long. No need to bring chargers for a short weekend trip. Definitely not Kindle long (not even close) but 5 times more than my laptop.

3. Decent apps. Some are excellent. I have a couple of games, but the news media apps are excellent.

4. Internet access via WiFi is fast. To load up and to get content.

5. I was bummed about the lack of USB reader, but I can't really think of an instance where I would use it (me personally).

6. Watching Netflix during some work down time is excellent!

7. No direct printing (wireless) is a bummer but I think that is being addressed with 4.2 (November).

8. Screen is quite nice. Not superb, but quite nice.

9. Most of all it has the correct form factor for a media consumption device. Any bigger and I would not take it with me. Any smaller and why carry two phone sized devices?

Its not a full fledged computer. Typing on it is a chore. If I have to do some more extensive research or write a longer email, I wait until I get to a real computer. Quick stuff I'll bang out on the iPad.

I carry a microfiber cloth with me for the smudges. I can look at it and it smudges.

I like it so much, that I'm getting the 32 GB as well. Of course, YMMV.

Really not that surprising as the apple more or less has the corner on the market on portable devices, and the fact most people see apple computers as over priced and under valued, especially when you can get a PC for 1/3 the price and for a desktop if you are dead set on a mac again you can get a mac (hackintosh) for 1/2 the price and get twice the power!

that has been proven to be false multiple times. Feature for feature (including software) Apple computers are a smidge more expensive, but definitely not 3 times as much.

Lay out the components MB, video card, etc and then with the software. Compare price to price and see what is comes too.

I'm not a die hard Apple fan. But your statement is just wrong.

Depends on what machine we're talking about, though. Every iMac model is a damn good value, but only certain configurations of the Mac Pro and MacBook Pros are price-competitive. The MacBook doesn't excel in any particular way in my opinion. The Mac mini isn't price-competitive with any particular desktop on the market right now (though I still think it's a decent product, all things considered). The low-end 13" MacBook Pro's price is not particularly breathtaking, particularly with the processor "upgrade". The Air is not currently well-priced either, despite a lack of competitive products in that sector, but that should change Wednesday when it's refreshed. If current rumors are accurate, the new Air is going to be pretty interesting. Might even have what it takes to get me to buy one (and I'm just not a laptop kind of guy).

Diehard PC enthusiasts tend to look at Macs purely from a perspective of performance-for-dollar, so naturally they see every Mac as an incredibly poor value. Apple just doesn't build machines that fit that profile — probably never will. More important factors for Apple are build quality (well, usually), noise output, display quality, size, weight and aesthetic value. There's also the advantage of that really close-knit hardware/software relationship (the way the trackpads work, for instance). Sometimes the numbers still don't add up, but other times the pricing is totally appropriate. I thought that of the iMac, so I went and bought one.

Seems like a simple enough pill to swallow — that sometimes performance isn't the end-all-be-all of what a computer is all about — but it's a hard thing for some people to understand.

I bought one, and they get you with accessories: keyboard, camera kit, case extra charging adapters, etc. Yes, I have a netbook (and a laptop, and a desktop, and a cell phone, and a zune HD) but the iPad has instant on and dare I say it, everything is simplified and works.

The one thing I like to have on it, is a music subscription service. I only have 1gb of music from various CDs after I deleted everything and went with the Zune Pass.

There's a big difference between Apple selling more iPads and people buying more iPads. It's a very fine distinction but it's there, nonetheless. Most people miss it, which isn't surprising at all really.

So what is the difference? It's a zero sum game with only one source.

An obvious sign of deevolution. idiocracy was right!

Can the iTampon be far away? :D

Umm they sold 4.19 million iPads and they sold less mac PCs than that, to me around 4 million does not exactly sound like much when compaired the 89.7 million normal PCs.

And yes mac's are PCs as in personal computers :p

I managed to get by the last ten years or so without one. I foresee myself being able to go at least another ten just fine, unless they are required by law to own.

And when that happens, I'm moving off this fucking rock.

The iPad is a decent product that doesn't really have a competing product on the market that is as polished. Its price is high, but still falls well within the realm of reasonable. Its target audience is people who want a device that can handle everyday technological stuff like light web surfing, simple games, and watching videos. It deserves to sell like gangbusters.

The Mac is a decent product that is horrendously overpriced and has plenty of competition from much more versatile PCs with infinitely larger developer support and software libraries. Its target audience is people who have more money than sense. It has no right to exist in its current state, but then again there will always be people who pay $1.50 a bottle for water.

Guess we aren't gonna be seeing 7" ipads anytime soon. Atleast until jobs makes another statement that completely contradicts it (Which isn't gonna be the first time)

There's no way to adequately Duct tape 2 iPod touchs (3.5" screens) together to make a 7" diagonal device in that manner. Was much easier doing 4 iPod touchs to make the iPad, however. :D

2x2 works, but 1x1... nope. ;)
