Corsair H70 Water Cooler Performance Testing @ [H]

I'm really impressed with my H70. I bought it at Fry's last week alongside a HAF 922 case and a 2TB refurb HDD. Temps are really stable, I've not seen it even approach 70 degrees C under 100% Prime95 load.

It's 2010 use Intel Burn Test. :p

Gunna be fitting my H70 today, just as soon as my mobo/ram and cpu arrive, should be arrivign within the next 30 minutes so the tracking info says.

got mine today. really easy install, on a socket 1366 board. dropped my idle temps by 7C over a true black with high speed fan. i was not expecting this, i recently put my stuff into a lanboy air and the true touched the top of the case. i guess it did more than touch, and was slightly cocked. anyway, the "cpu" temp from eleet 1.08 (the sensor under the socket?) is now 27c at idle, used to be 36c. after 30 or 40 min of prime on all cores, highest temp is around 75c, with a vcore of 1.40v. much better than the true black i have been using. more quiet, too.(swapped out fans). i, also, am really impressed. this is my first corsair product in over 12 years of building my own machines.

27oC at idle ?

I fitted mine today on a i7 950cpu and the best I can do is 37oC - 44oC idle.

27 is a helluva difference compared to mine, that sux, I want 27oC :(

maybe he his room temp is drastically lower than yours, because my i7 920 idles around this same temp with this cooler.

Do you all use speedstep ? and what voltages are your cpu set at, also what case do you all have ?

3 of my cores are below 40, 37/38 and the main core, core 0 is 43/44 @ idle.

I suspect that its my case, as things are pretty cramped, although saying that, I did prime95 for about 30-45 mins and all 4 cores were maxed out at 100% and the hottest core got upto 59oC, the rest were 52/53oC

Also, I did as Kyle did, use the fans to exhaust hot air over the radiator instead of sucking air into the case, maybe I should change it so that the fans are sucking in instead of blowing out ?

that would help. my pc is near an open window, and i believe thats how my idle temps are so low. i get nice cold air directly in to the radiator. my ambient is around 20c right now. i dont use speedstep (at least right now) and i am using lanboy air.

I figured out why my temps were slightly high, it was the ambient temp of the room/inside the pc.

I forgot, its basically now winter over here and although it isnt exactly cold per'se, this room heats up quickly as its kinda small and has loads of electric things in it and, my window was closed and lo and behold, the other half had turned on the central heating to low.

Once I woke up today and without the heating being on, my temps for all cores are low 30's

I did wonder why I could walk about with a t-shirt on and feel hot, I just thought it was the hot air coming from my tv and pc :S

I just finished my install into a CM Sniper black mesh from std intel cooler, on first boot the pump did not cut in, the cpu was at 99c from switch on to windows, that's how much heat a cpu generates so when we talk about 30 or 40 with a cooler it means 60 degrees is being treated.

Anyway, the computer shutdown itself I checked all the fittings and gave the pump a wrap with my knuckle figuring it had been sitting idle for awhile and needed a wake up call, startup and everything was fine.
I'm using the resistors on the fans, and I have set them to exhaust out of the case, ambient room temp is 26c idle is about 34 to 37, full load running for 30 minutes does not push the core temp above 67, I think this is a great solution for the right sort of case.

I have also noticed that the thermal gunk they have applied on the copper part, I have noticed that for me anyway, it has taken a couple of days to work to its full capacity, as for some reason today my temps are about 2 degrees lower than what they have been.

So I will put that down to the thermal paste needing a few days solid use to get to its full potential.

Fry's has these on sale this week for $84.99. I want to buy one and see how it compares to my H50.

If I can take off 10 degrees off of my over clock load temps seems like it may be worth it.

If it doesn't perform I can return it and keep the H50.

Got one at Frys yesterday and it looks promising.

Will do a setup as exhaust (blowout) and keep the stock fans (2000rpm!). They are a bit loud in full speed so only use this speed in gaming. Will connect them via my Zelman fan controller.

Also, I will replace the stock compound with a fresh layer of Shin-Etsu X23-7783D. Let's see how much it will pull the temp down from my notoriously hot 4.08ghz i7 870.....

The H50 had some Shin Etsu already on it from the factory. I think the H70 may have some on it as well.

I got a H70 today.

I'm going to swap out my H50 set up for an identical H70 set up. I'm hoping for at least a 10 degree Celsius drop in temperature under full load on my over clocked 4.0gHz i7-930.

I have put a lot of trust in putting my money down on a H70. If it doesn't perform as well as what all these reviews claims against the H50 I'm going to return it and keep my H50.

Yes I know but the Shin-Etsu MicroSi X23-7783D is the top-of-the-line compound (Ultimate Thermal Performance grade). Since I have already paid $8 for a .5g tube, why not using it :)

I helped my friend upgrade and transplant her components into an Antec 902 tonight.

Here's the skinny:

Asus M3A78-T with latest bios
Phenom II X6 1090t
4gb Corsair DDR2 1066
1x MSI GTX 470

Here's how we set this up... the 902 has two removable drive bays for 3.5" drives. In order to mount the radiator/fans as an intake as Corsair suggest, we had to disassemble one of the two drive bays and enlarge the holes for the 120mm fan screws so that the outer radiator fan could be screwed in from the outside (we used one of the included Antec Tricool 120mm fans for the outer radiator fan).

Then we mounted the radiator and fan to roughly the middle of the front of the case, with exactly the right amount of room for the hoses to reach the CPU and still allow one drive bay on the top for the DVD drive. I know that the bottom would be ideal but the hoses don't reach the CPU from there because the Antec 902 has the power supply mounted in the bottom.

Anyway, ambient temps here are about 68*F (20*C). BIOS hardware monitor indicated 19c CPU temp.

After booting to Win7 64 (stock speeds/bios settings) both CoreTemp and HWMonitor show core temps of ~16c. I'm guessing this is a bug with how the M3A78 reports temps? Here's the other numbers (this is with Prime going on all cores):

TMPIN0 = 35c
TMPIN1 = 34c
TIMPIN2 = -54c

Cores all show 22-24c according to CoreTemp and HWMonitor with 100% Prime load.

What's the deal? Is one of these actual CPU temp? Why do the cores and bios report lower temps?

edit: One other thing... the actual heat thrown off from the rad and case exhaust fans really is barely warm.

I absolutely LOVE this setup and I'll probably do the exact same thing with my own stuff at some point. I am really impressed by both the Antec 902 and Corsair H70 (just gotta figure out what the actual temps are with this motherboard...)

If you have good airflow to the fans, why would you need to install them blowing in? I'd like to see what the difference is with the fans exhausting normally pulling from the case. I'd like to have one of these, good review.

not sure why its really call water cooler, you do not need water to run this cooler ;) Call it water free radiator H70

Well the idea is to use the coolest air possible to cool the radiator. If you have it mounted as an exhaust, the air being drawn across the rad is coming from the air inside the case which is almost always a few degrees warmer than ambient room temp.

So as the 'cooler' air is drawn over the radiator it is heated and then dumped into your case to heat up the MB, Vid Cards, Memory, drives etc, further increasing the heat of the cpu which in turn heats up the radiator to in turn increase the heat coming into the case! and so it goes on and on.

I'm not saying Corsair are wrong! I just can't believe a thermal engineer would agree with their instructions, mine certainly exhausts out and I have 2 x 200mm fans drawing air in from the front, from the review I have read there is little to no difference in temps.

Maybe not, I was just telling kooda what the idea is behind setting it up as an intake. I am sure 100 people would have 100 opinions as to which way actually works better.

Contemplating buying one of these... but.....

I'm just trying to work out where the hell I would mount this thing. No chance in hell I am having it replace the rear exhaust to suck air INTO the case, asking for trouble. Only when summer comes around alot of people will realise this.

Say, on the HAF X for example, where would you mount it? The ceiling?

Place it where your present exhaust is only turn the fans around so it exhausts out!

most just mount these types for exhaust despite manufacturer's suggestion.

the H50's been found to be the better buy, showing the same performance with an optimal fan setup in testing done by forum member SonDa5. the H70 wasn't planned out very well or was marketed incorrectly, take your pick, lol.

So the H50 ships with a single fan.

Am I right in saying you could just attach that to your current exhaust fan, with the supplied one blowing onto the radiator from the other side?

Does seem odd, the price difference is nothing to be sneered at.

My H70 is exhaust out!

And I like it that way :D

I have 3 more 140mm fans (1600rpm) sucking fresh air IN and an additional ONE ceiling 140mm fan (1600rpm) sucking air out also!

Just ordered the H50! Under the hot deals thread tiger direct has it for $20 off right now making it $59.99 so if you were thinking of getting one just to put it through it's paces and see how it works in your rig I would say now is a good time!

Interesting results...great design to have a cooler much smaller then any of the best air coolers yet cools better

Nice review. I love my H50 and I changed the stock fans and converted it in to a pull/push setup. Both fan run aroung 1800rpm (rated as 2k). I have to say I get similar numbers like the H70. Now one thing that is to my advabtage is my office is in the basement and it tends to be much cooler than the rest of the house.

What fans are you using? I just bought a H50 and a HAF X case and want optimal performance.

I'm really thinking of getting one of these maybe the h50 instead though. I'm afraid Ill have to uninstall it every time I have to move my case though.

I ordered the H70 today, hoping I can get it into my Nine Hundred Two without removing the motherboard and hoping it'll do better than I expect because I'm not very optimistic at the moment but I'll post the difference after it has been running a few days.

I'll be going from a Scythe Yasya to the H70. The Scythe has been working fine but I'm hoping the H70 adds some insurance.
