I have a customer that wants to do an in-house streaming video server with 5 big screens to show videos, slide shows, POS promo type stuff.

They said they don't mind wiring up a dedicated network for this use to avoid flooding their existing network with the video traffic.

Just looking for suggestions from you guys who have done this type of project on video appliances or video servers and the hardware to connect the 5 screens.

You can get units that will take a VGA input and output it to several monitors over Cat5. One of my clients uses this in their office, forget the exact name of it.

streaming 1080p takes about 5-10% of a 100mbit connection. if you have a gigabit network already there would probably be little reason to run a parallel network. though only 5 screens and a server isnt a big network to install, if they are currently running only 10/100 in the building its not a bad idea, wont cost too much, and will make your life easier to configure.

tripplite makes VGA-over-cat5 adapters, though this means you would need to be at the server to play the video.

you would probably be better off with a netbook-type computer at every screen so that you can browse around at the screen thru the files. have the netbooks just running a off of a VM image on the server so that they are all centrally managed and dont need anything other then a processor, some ram, video card and net connection. you could stand at the server and play movies on any given screen, or control it from the showroom floor directly.

That sounds like what I need. Would be great if you can remember the brand name of the equipment. Was it the Tripplite stuff mentioned?

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
