New Lian Li PC-V354 m.atx case : Specification & Feature

This Noctua NH-U9B SE2 is very quiet. Is it out of your price range or something? For an extra $30 you get great mounting hardware, and 2 very quiet fans. I'm sure anyone who has used a Noctua fan will tell you Noctua fans are pretty much completely silent. I can barely hear my rig, despite that it has the 2x 92mm Noctua fans, and the two front 120mm fans + the 140mm top fan the case comes with. and I'm not even using the ULNAs (Ultra Low Noise Adapters) that Noctua gives you to make the fans slower and quieter.

just not sure about the setup, will those fans clear the northbridge cooler on the Rampage 3 matx mobo? it would have to go vertical with the tall ram i have. The case is coming tomorrow and im just going to look it over to see what i truly have room for. But ill look into the NH-U9B, just trying to keep it below a budget so well see.

Jeeze, that's an expensive mobo for somebody on a budget. but yes, looking at pics on Newegg, I would say the U9B will fit. It looks like there's a decent amount of space between those heatsinks and the CPU socket, and the U9B is smaller than you think once you see it in person.

Anyway, I've got an update on my build for you guys. Since the GA-73PVM-S2 I have in here now is a crappy overclocker, I just bought a DFI LANParty JR P45 from wsnors. I also ordered a StarTech.com 2 Port USB Motherboard Header Adapter , so that I don't have USB cables coming out of a PCI bracket in the back. I guess that's the only way to do front USB 3.0 ports though.

Edit: Canceled my order for the adapter, since on Newegg, the picture shows this case coming with an adapter like that! I don't remember seeing it, but I need to look around.

I am suprised Lian-Li didn't go for full ATX. Given that they already have 5 slots and 1 inch above the mobo, it seems like they would only need to add 1 inch to height of the case. Ditch the top fan and move the mobo up 1 inch, thus adding the 2 inch needed to take full ATX.

With this setup they could then move the PSU down 1 inch, thus providing 2 inch more clearance between top of PSU and bottom of CPU heatsinks and allow for a 140mm rear fan. (case would also look nicer with no top fan grill IMO). Slide out mobo tray would be nice too.

If Lian-Li made a revision like this it would be the perfect case for me. (would also fit many of the coolers people want to fit in this thread).

@CrimsonFury: What I'm disappointed about is that their normal case accessories don't fit (e.g., PCI slot fan, cable mgmt stuff). I swear this case only needed an additional 1cm for the power supply and HD bay, and I wouldn't have to do any of this stuff below....

I'm looking into cutting vents in the bottom of the case to intake cool air from the bottom. I took Lian Li BS-08 PCI slot fan, removed the air box, and added the fans to the bottom of the case. Just need the vents at the bottom for intake and then I'll have four 120mm fan intakes, two 120mm + one 140mm exhaust. Should take care of my cooling situation.

I'm a bit squeamish about cutting holes in this pretty case though (even on the bottom). I'm planning to mount fan filters there too. What do you think for painting over my cuts? Black enamel paint?

Is it not disqualified b/c of push-pin attachment? :D

What's wrong with push pins? You don't really need anything more secure unless the HSF is extremely heavy or if you planning on slinging the box around, right?

Just installed the arctic cooling freezer 7 pro on my i7 860 (I bought it on sale. Plus I don't plan on using sli or crossfire). Idles at 34c and full load is at 68c. I replaced the stock thermal paste with arctic silver 5 so I expect those numbers to drop.

That HSF uses push pins but is pretty light, quiet, cheap and there's plenty of room in the case for it.

hey! good case
i have a v351 and i need some fresh air and more space for longer cards

noctua NH-C12P SE14 fits this case without modding¿?
is my old cooler and dont want to sell it
hi from Spain!

Regarding the H50, I just cut the screws that were included down to a size small enough to where I could mount the fan directly to the radiator. Then just used the v354 mounting accessories to remount the fan. Works perfectly.

Any pics? I am really interested in whether or not the h50/70 is a true possibility in this case.

Here's my build. This is an AMD setup. I used the 92mm Noctua cooler. I didn't measure but there is about .25" between the top of the cooler and the power supply. The gfx card is a 5850 and as you can see, it would interfere with the lower drive cage.

Yea very few decent psu's would have cable lengths short enough for that extra 6" to be an issue with this case.

Once power supply is in place, obviously not. However, when you're working on your system, having the extra length is helpful. Of course, this case was designed with a modular power supply in mind, so if you have one of those, probably a non-issue.

FYI, the hard drive cages hang over the mATX motherboard by about ~6mm. A reference GTX 460 has ~30mm of clearance. Back power connectors will be tight but workable.

meh.. taht wouldnt be de facing the case.. The face would still be pretty & Pristine.

@Bastage: Did you end up doing this Dremel work? I am interested in cutting a hole in the bottom of the case to install an intake fan (with filter) for the PCI cards. Never done this before, so any pics of your work and tools would be of infinite help to me. ;)

I don't have this case, but if cutting in a fan a dremel is the wrong tool. A hole saw will make quick work of it and come out much better.

I know this may sound crazy.. but what would you guys think of stuffing these items in this case?

(1) Asus Rampage II Gene
(1) Intel i7 920
(2) Corsair Dominator 6GB kits
(2) eVGA GTX 260 SSC (216 Core)
(1) Ultra X4 750W Power Supply
(1) Thermalright TRUE Black 120

The reason I ask this is I already own the hardware above except for the case. It's currently in a Lian Li v350. I just haven't ordered a moddified back plate so I can move the power supply over the video cards and put in the Thermalright TRUE.

I got R2G, 920, 5850 in a v354 myself just to add a bigger heatsink

Looks great to me. You might have some issue with mounting a CPU fan, but see my pics above how you can mount a slim 120mm x 12mm fan, if necessary.

Hell I was planning on R3G, i7 930, 5870 and a 120.2 rad in the front

No, this is crazy: I want to shrink my crazy system - do you think I could get away with a

R3G
Core i7 980X
Dual GTX480 in SLI

Or would that just be pushing my luck?

Thanks for your thoughts,
N

Dual GTX480 is crazy by default, yes :D

On a more serious note (not that I wasn't serious above too), I'm not really confident at all that the case could handle the GTXs.

It will fit (taking out bottom cage), but you will having serious cooling issues.

With some cleaver modding this could "work"... I'd suggest turning your PSU so that it sucks cool air from the outside of the case and doesnt further strangle your cards/cook your PSU. Also might pay to raise the case up a bit and add a fan thatll just blow air on the cards.

That was a good review. I wish they had gone with that i7 980X and Asus Gene II build just to see how well it installed and performed. I'm liking this case more and more as reviews are coming out now. :)

Has anyone built a file server using this case? How noisy is it with 4+ hd's?

Silentpcreview complained about hard drive cage vibration in their review of the Lian Li PC-Q08, which is very similar in design, but is smaller due to mitx.

i know this takes things outside the box but has anyone thought about getting the Lian Li power supply extender to make a little more room inside, plus mounting the pull fan of the h70 push/pull configuration on the outside of the back of the case?

The PSU extender wouldn't help, there is already room to mount extended length PSUs in this case. The extender doesn't move the PSU back far enough to use 120mm tower heatsinks.

This pic gives you a good idea of the space with the PSU installed http://www.techspot.com/articles-info/323/images/Image_37.jpg

From what owners of the case have said, there isn't room to mount the H70 at the rear of the case due to clearance around the 120mm mount (even with 1 fan on the rad)

OK, what do you guys think of this? I'm trying to get my case temps down a little farther. My hard drives are also running near 39C, which I want to get down to 35C or less.

I'm proposing cutting two fan holes in the side of the case (the cover panel). Both fans would blow over the hard drive cages. So, that would be a total of 4 x 120mm intake fans and 2 x 120mm exhaust (incl power supply) + 1 x 140mm exhaust. It will be a tight squeeze, but I think it's do-able. Question is: Good idea or bad idea?

Bad idea (imo).
1. There's plenty of airflow with two 120mm intakes and those 3 exhaust fans.
2. You may get fitting and cabling issues with side fans.
3. You may ruin the side panel (or just make it ugly)
4. 39C is an Ok temperature for most HDDs (it's a great operating temperature for many, in fact) -- check the specs of your drives, they probably go up to at least 60C. Try moving the HDDs within the cage(s) if you're so unhappy with 39C - you may find a cooler spot.
