The Mafia 2 Thread **Contains Spoilers**

LOL, some people have made an entire wiki about all the things 2K or the rushed schedule removed from Mafia II!!!

http://mafia2removedfeatures.wikia.com/wiki/Real_Mafia_2_Wiki

The game was originally much more GTA like with tons of activities to do like fighting in a fight club for money, betting on the race track, drag strip racing, etc. There was also a respect/reputation feature so if you were a classy gangster or were well respected, people would respect you more and offer you lower prices or lower bribes, etc. and if you were a cold blooded killer who harmed the public (police, civilians, etc.) your reputation would go down and police would go harder after you.

Look at the full list of the original save points. There were other missions set in WWII before the one in the final game! There are far more missions and even the 4 different branches to the 4 endings. There's even a minimap of the Italian campaign on the wiki.

Jimmy's Betrayal/Vendetta was originally going to be a single large DLC called Rags to Riches but Sony gave 2K a bag of money and they got the exclusive rights to half the story and so they just rushed Jimmy's Vendetta to market with scraps from the leftover cut missions (the mansion) without cutscenes or any storyline and broke it in half and made it a Sony exclusive.

There was also a big job system with tons of jobs you can do which also includes choices your character can make.

http://mafia2removedfeatures.wikia.com/wiki/Job_System

There's also a ton of public transport cut of the game. The Taxi system is mostly complete. The subway was modeled and there are even tunnels running through the 3D map. There were trains, buses too, etc.

You know all those neon signs showing clothing/diners/gunshops, etc.? Well there were also signs for buying houses from the realty shop and also for buying cars from Diamond Motors (that's why the interior is fully modeled).

^^ Pretty amazing and not really a surprise.

I think most people who have played the game and see how large, detailed, and fully realized that amazing game world is can easily intuit that there was a LOT more intended for it than what showed up in the final product and DLCs thus far.

Enjoying it far more than GTAIV. They're not comparable, one is a sandbox game and the other is a linear game set in a big city. They're not the same thing, even if they were supposed to be originally.

I'm enjoying the game. No bugs or issues or annoyances for me, just working as intended and feels nice and tight at that. Kept me playing for a lot longer than GTAIV did.

I wonder how many of those removed features will be accounted for after a year or two of DLC.

Wow, did this game ever fall off the radar quickly.

Me, I'm still on Chapter Seven. But anyway, most of you will have seen the Steam advertisements for the new Mafia 2 DLC in the way of new cars and outfits.

I like the military one, and the one with the Letterman's jacket - very 50's. I think I'll buy them.

It fell off people's radars because it was a mediocre game with even worse DLC. I haven't seen the new DLC you're talking about, but it sounds a lot like Oblivion's horse armor...

With Dead Rising 2, Civilization 5, and F1 2010 all having come out in the last week, there's no reason for someone to come back to Mafia II.

If memory serves me right, most if not all of that $2 a pop DLC was bundled in with preorders of collector's editions depending on where you preordered and how.

I think you're right, I seem to remember that too.

How completely pointless when there is no game to use these outfits and cars in! Just like all the other DLCs so far. I wouldn't even call Jimmy's vendetta a real game. All those clothes and cars were actually made for the original game but then cut out later. There was a racing jacket because there was a part in the story where you would do drag racing for money. That was deleted from the game. There are jeeps because there was an entire Italian campaign designed for the game. That was deleted. Those DLCs all came free with the various versions as well, just one was exclusive to each retailer. Now you are paying $$ for it. It's absurd. They are just clothes to wear and cars to drive in a game where there is nothing else to do. A hollow, vapid, empty world where any discerning player can tell that things are missing.

So you're on Chap. 7 now? The best part of the game is over sadly. Soon after this, the "montage" happens. The part where you realize there was supposed to be a ton of storyline and a ton of gaming but they just skip it all and throw in clips of cutscene segments and it jumps like a year and nothing has changed except the feeling that all the story was just yanked out and skipped.

Unfortunately I kind of feel this way, too. I've moved on for now.

I've moved on as well, but still, it's only two dollars. You get a jeep and a war uniform. And the 50's letterman jacket - that's worth two dollars. Or I could just buy the whole thing for eight dollars. Or I could slit my wrists in the bathtub and have a little party beforehand.

I think instead you should enjoy Darksiders, F1 2010, Civ 5, and Dead Rising 2 instead of pissing away $2 on bullshit.

^^ Man's gotta point. ;)

I need to look into some of those games myself come to think of it.

Wow. I bought the Jimmy's Vendetta or whatever DLC, and was very disappointed. I enjoyed Mafia II for the story and for some of the game play... but a bunch of mini missions tossed loosely into a story told by loading screens?

Ugh.

And now they want us to pay for this. Screw that. I'm pissed I paid $60 on this, since they're just milking it.

It was originally going to be part of the PS3 exclusive DLC Jimmy's Betrayal, but Sony tossed money at 2K and poof it became two things. At least that is what I've heard.

I loved Mafia 2, but now that I've beaten it I doubt I'll play it again.

The game could/should have been much more than it is

In its present form...me, too. At least until either official or unofficial (re: mods) really open some things up and add some things.

I only lasted until chapter 3....just couldn't force myself to drive around and do pointless stuff anymore. This game reminded me why multiplayer was invented.

Not my style at all.

Sadly there is evidence of multiplayer features people have found in the code but that too was cut out to make a deadline by 2K.

Considering the content that was cut out of this the game is great. I just had a superb moment where I stole a car, and as I went to pull away the car's owner opened the door and pulled me out. Didn't expect anything good, usually it's an annoying "realistic" mechanic that just serves as a pain in the dick when you're trying to get a mission done.

The good thing though was that as the guy pulled me out of his own car, a police car pulled up behind it and witnessed him pulling me out and smacking me in the face. An inconvenient and tedious moment turned excellent when the police pulled a gun on him and attempted to arrest him for stealing his own car, according to what they'd seen. He resisted, was shot in the back, and I jumped back in and drove away.

No gay Oblivion-style psychic police or anything like you see in GTA, the game's been designed with this stuff in mind. Adds to the immersion and the moments like that, where you stick up a clothing store, rob the cash register and some police run in and get gunned down are taken from generic to hugely satisfying when you can then steal a new set of clothes and walk out past the reinforcements who arrive, unaware you're the criminal because you killed the police before they could call in your description.

If this game hadn't been rushed it would have been GOTY material.

Those very infrequent moments FAR from make up for the tedious missions, ludicrous amount of driving, and countless other shortfalls detailed throughout this thread. Maybe if the game were baking for another 6 months it could have been different, but you could say that about tons of games.

Still not sure what people were expecting. I still love the first Mafia and loved the second. Could have been a lot better but knowing what the first one was like, 2 met my expectations.

Yeah, it's hyperbole, but I actually enjoy the game a lot more than the others people hold up as preferable examples. GTA has been complete shit since San Andreas - I was playing that before I got Mafia 2, and as good as I remember it being it's just too clumsily put-together to be a legitimately good game. The less said about GTAIV the better. SA2 is a great game too, and better than Mafia 2, but it's about the only one besides the original Mafia.

I may just be lucky, but I've had no issues with Mafia 2. The story's more compelling than any GTA, the aesthetic is enjoyable and well-researched, the gunplay and combat is better-done than all but SA2. SA2 is the cartoon equivalent of a sandbox game, just a playground in which to go and do silly shit. M2 is the other end of the spectrum, with all the little details taken into consideration like driving too fast being a great way to fuck up a mission by killing yourself or attracting police attention, whereas GTA is now just middle-of-the-road mediocrity licking its own arsehole with just as much tedious driving. You can see the developers genuinely wanted to make this game good and were just buffaloed in that respect by the publishers.

I liked the driving a lot, and the missions, for me, were far from boring. The mission in which you have to bury the guy in your trunk was a refreshing change of pace, because the mission didn't involve killing.

Even as I was playing through that mission I was thinking about the hundreds of thousands of mostly male gamers who find The Sims to be 'pointless' - why? - because the game isn't about killing or destruction of some kind... and I thought, they're going to hate this, and complain that it's 'pointless'.

Joe's Adventure $10 DLC out now.

Anyone going for it?

That DLC is only about the time when Vito was in jail ??
Or it's also about the final part of Mafia 2 ??

Does anyone know how I can force the game to run in directx9 so that I can make xfire videos and take screenshots? Thanks.

Could some mod please ban this thread necromancer? k thanx
