I bought it from a kid locally, he told me it was a full retail motherboard and it looked the part...

turns out it is a sample board and MSI will not RMA it

890GXM-g65

so what should I do?

is there any recourse I have against this kid?

Contact the kid and let him know what happened. Maybe he'll work with you.

Probably not, unless you think your case would stand up in court. And that's only if you have genuine contact info for the guy.

wtf is a sample board?

pre release sent out to reviewers i would assume.....or maybe a sample product sent out to say the local MC or Fry's, to see if they want to carry the product

edit: sniped...

is there something wrong with the board? Have you talked to the seller? Also most warranties are for the first owner only (at least all the mobos I have owned).

yeah basically the board just stopped working for no reason... it was acting funny(not posting) so I asked him for warranty info, he said he would get back with me later that day, it;s been nearly a month

not really an issue with the MSI boards, they don't require registering and they don't require a receipt, they only go by the build date for warranty

How long ago did you buy it from him? Did you pay with cash/check? I would try to find him and get a full refund since he sold you a board that might not be final hardware (pre-release, sometimes board change a little after review samples) or a demo/review board (damaged by the reviewer or maybe even put on display, who knows what could have happened) while telling you it is a retail board. If he didn't know kind of sucks for him but he should know what he is selling, if you think he is genuine in that maybe you could work out a partial refund with him?

I'm going to stop by this thread every so often to see what's going on. I've locked down all of JoshuaLX's sale threads at Notebook Review...at least the ones that are still open.

He already has a problem or two with members there as well.

That makes me suspicious, whenever someone pulls something like that it seems to be a bad sign. Sounds like he knew it was a sample board when he sold it to you.

he knew it was a sample board...

I found a pic in his photobucket acct that has his address and name, under that it says overclockers club...

then it says its from MSI

i will link it later

This is not the place for this kind of converastion once it got past the MSI will not RMA "sample" boards.

There is a sub-forum in FS/FT for this kind of thing.
