No one can say for certain if Crysis 2 will become the same benchmarking standard as the original, but nVidia is taking no chances.

nVidia is taking no chances to the tune of $2 Million.

For that, it will not only want exclusive marketing rights – nVidia will also want to make sure that Crysis 2 is stressing the right parts of the graphics card. Cynics would guess severe levels of tessellation and PhysX will become significantly more important to the Crysis 2 development team overnight (even if they, somehow, missed including the right levels over the previous 3 years of development).

Sigh

I've been sick of this trend for years now, guess it's not even really a trend anymore, just plain ol greased palms.

Definite mixed feelings on this.

On one hand, it seems the PC version will have a much tweaked graphics engine compared to the console.

On the other hand, TWIMTBP + Physx is just a shitty way to do business. If I can't run this fully on my 5850's, I won't buy the title nor am I likely to go to the green team next refresh.

It looks like a desperation move because their graphics card business is down. This is just more wasteful spending in hopes of selling more graphics cards. LOL

2 Million could be spent on a number of things from web content to developer time. Who knows, maybe bundle not unlike HL2 and ATI.

I'd rather the money was spent on making the game good..

They've been revealed as basically conmen with PhysX being one of the most laughable physics APIs about, especially it's speed and support on Non-Nvidia hardware.

Tessellation isn't so much of a problem, you need to push quite a lot to slow down cards to the point where you probably cannot appreciate the additional detail that's been added, for example tessellation on a typical NPC in a game can only be so high before it's pointless doing more, so if they stress it in order to try and fake some kind of advantage it's not actually going to benefit gamers.

Also the ATI 6xxx range will have increased tessellation speed so they might just end up shooting themselves in the foot.

I've been extremely dissapointed with some developers and their willingness to jump into bed with nvidia, the PhysX thing is especially jaring, I'd love to appreciate PhysX in games on my quad core CPU but the optimisation of the code is completely and totally shit, they can't even make use of 50% of the available resources.

Crysis was already a TWIMTBP game - no Physx, though. I still laugh every time I see a silly TWIMTBP or "Future is Fusion" logo in a game.

it's to get the "NVIDIA THE WAY ITS MEANT TO BE PLAYED" logo plus the NVIDIA decals will be all over the map.

So instead of North Korean soldiers having Kim Jung Il on their lapels, they will have nVidia?

Lousy news. If it does turn out that Nvidia reaps the fruits of this relationship, then I hope it'll at least cause more sites to write about it and bring the issue to attention.

Same here.

I've skipped a few titles recently because of Physx or brand specific AA.

Now, if the green team does come out with something I want to buy, I have no problem owning an nVidia card. At which point I would go back and play the titles I missed but I won't play them unless I get the full experience.

Batman AA, here we go again.

I am curious about why they might go with Physx, when the Cryengine has its own cpu code for physics.

Haha, they are going to spend 2m on Crysis 2, so you guys all blow your wads trying to build rigs that can play it~~~

If nvidia hasn't had another huge architectural change by March who wants to bet that Crysis 2 will be delayed to coincide with their release ala Just Cause 2.

The Way You're Meant to Be Played

Maybe if they spent more resources on making better GPUs, they wouldn't have to do this kind of crap.

PhysX would run on CPUs if they made more than a half-hearted effort. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/phyx-ageia-x87-sse-physics,10826.html and http://realworldtech.com/page.cfm?ArticleID=RWT070510142143

Can't wait for more open physics standards for GPUs in the future than PhysX. Unfortunately that won't be for a while. Fortunately Havok can do just fine in the interim.

yeah what he said. they spent a lot of time and money making their own physic engine, i doubt they will scrap that and use (broken) physx.

My bet is 3DVision.
I've read that they plan on having Crysis 2 be able to switch to 3D without any performance hit. A high profile benchmark type game might be just what nvidia needs to promote the technology.

Weird, that actually sounds kinds low for a high profile title like Crysis 2. I mean ATI paid Valve 6 million for the marketing rights to HL2 6 years ago, you'd think Crytek could demand way more than 2 mil now to optimize for nVidia only/give them sole marketing rights/put nVidia's proprietary bullshit into their game.

Oh wait, some part of the article says its for the demo rights, yet other parts and the title say its for 'Crysis 2'. Could be possible the author of the article thought a 'Crysis 2' headline would bring in more hits than a 'Crysis 2 benchmark' headline.

Same here. I'm thinking this money is for Nvidia being able to put their logo on all Crysis 2 ads and other promotional material. Two million isn't enough to make Crytek go back and rework PhysX into the game. I also doubt the bit about Crytek increasing the tessellation level at Nvidia's request. Doesn't make any sense to artificially cripple the performance of a big portion of potential user base.

That is an awesome mod idea, by the way. AMD vs Nvidia deathmatches! Teams would be automatically selected by your card brand.

Not quite true. ATI paid to be able to distribute Half-life 2 with ATI products as well. Also while the hardware enthusiast community is fascinated by Crysis, I'd say overall it pales in comparison to Half-life in terms of recognition.

While this does carry some negatives, if you want PC gaming to compete with consoles I think it would be necessary for companies like Nvidia to step up and do this. Consoles have Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo investing in marketing, developing relationships with developers/publishers, media lobbying, and direct/indirect financial investments. PC games do not have these for the most part. Nvidia is actually really the only hardware maker that does somewhat reach out to developers, whether this is a good or bad thing well, that is somewhat debatable.

Wow, you guys act like ATi hasn't done the exact same thing to many other games before.... Its branding all that it really is. Crytek has a right to be compensated for advertising. Your not going to stick a log on a box for free are you?

Heres an example you people probably don't care to remember. Stalker SoC, was a TWIWMTBP game, and the performance on x1800/x1900 cards was terrible compared to 7800/7900 cards of the day. Then its expected that clear sky would be the same deal, then on the last minute, it fell through, and CoP is an ATi/AMD branded game. O but that's totally different right? Anything to bash nvidia right? if that's the case, you should be championing this because it makes them 2 million dollars poorer to the ultimate goal of bankruptcy.....

Who the fuck would want Nvidia or AMD/ATI to go out of business. That would be horrible from the consumer stand point. No competition, they could charge anything they wanted, and wouldn't have pressure to release new product so they can extend the life of outdated hardware for monetary purposes (just like Sony and MS with consoles).

Making a stab at "fanboism" while wreaking of fanboism. Good for a chuckle or two at least.

Consoles are quite a bit different than graphics cards.
Console makers require games and accessories to help offset the cost of the consoles so it is in their benefit to maximize the life of the console.

This would be too cool, got any links? Really guys, AMD or Intel or anyone is free to pony up money to support an open physics standard. Bottom line is that we are going to get a better PC game.

You must not read the video card form much. There have been many people who wish for nvidia's death because of inherent bias (and hate), if you don't believe so then you are blind or ignorant or both.

A call of fanboyism is a weak attempt to somehow invalidate what I or anyone may say, which may put the "other side" into a bad light. I wasn't attempting to take a side with my statements, just simply pointing out how short sided some of the people in this thread have been when looking at nvidia's investment into crysis 2. ATi (amd) has done the EXACT same thing many times with many games, its called advertising, its what good company's do. You or someone else may then point out that crysis 2 will have physX features built into it, and that this 2 million dollars is simply a "non-compete" payoff, not to use Havoc which would be compatible for both brands cards where physX isn't. Well I think that argument is logical and is made very easy to support, but I believe this argument is superficial and fails to look at the whole picture.

To make a good AAA title now adays requires 50-100 million+ to produce, hundreds of developers, many more QA people, thousands of computers and different pieces of hardware, and some of that hardware was designed by ATi, because that is half the market, and you have to make sure the game reasonably works on all compatible hardware. When put into context, 2 million aint' shit. Crytek is a developer in the past with crysis and farcry strives to produce the absolute best in rendered graphics for its games that is possible, sometimes in spite of current technology. Isn't it reasonable to think that maybe they chose to use the physX API in conjunction in their game because they believe that its the best physics API on the market and want the best for their game, not simply to take the easy payoff and snub ATi and its owners?

Lets be real here. Crytek and EA aren't going to put any 3rd party brand on the box without some kind of compensation, no game company would now adays, and would be insane to do so. But at the same time, ATi going to put their name on a game that uses their rivals proprietary technology. With that being said, Outside of physX, what says nvidia is actively and nefariously working to make this game run less than optimally on an ATi card? unless your definition of sub-optimal is phsyx vs none. If this was the truth, then why is crysis 1 which was a TWIWMTBP game now runs better on ATi hardware? because they somehow unpatched the game and the real superiority came out? or because ATi engineered its cards and drivers around the game and its rendering routines and years of sub par drivers been corrected and optimized?

I choose not to think as superficially as many people would about this move by crytek and nvidia. I believe crytek uses physx because they wanted to add the best elements into its game, and nvidia payed them this cash to use crysis 2 as A. adverting, B window dressing to its portfolio of games it "supports" and C offer its AIB partners a notable game to include in its package. Not simply to "hold ATi down" and subvert its technology and its market standing. But im just a simple fanboy right karma? not to be believed because of inherent bias (racism) against one company and not another?

Jesus some of you guys take shit like this way out of control. Take off your tin foil hats. I hate nvidia as much as the next guy but it's probably just some performance enhancements and getting their logo on the box that says they are the best.

Yep. YOu have to remember, Crysis, antoher TWIMTBP game, is where the HD5870 actually beats out the GTX480

...admittedly, that was on launch drivers. I dunno the current situation.
