So I know a few people are getting hex cores by the end of the week but how about the rest of you?

I have a gift card to Amazon coming in (yay for credit card rewards!) and I will be buying an H70 as soon as it gets here. I've been running my [email protected] stable for a long time due to heat but now I want more. I'm hoping for 4.2ghz but we will see.

Move the i7 out of the WHS box and make it dedicated. This will let me run -bigadv on it, net 10+k ppd.

Maybe another 460 and Hex cores for the SR-2 down the line.

I think I'm actually gonna downgrade, sell off my gamer rig and my GPU folding rig, some spare hardware, a Cisco Catalyst switch, some tactical gear, and maybe the i7 if things get tight. Obliterate my bills so that when spring rolls around I can maybe build a second SR2 rig and then just have only 2 rigs in the whole house

obviously that second rig is all pending a better job or a deployment but for now I'm forced to downsize. Sucks, but alas, that is life. Atleast I'll still have my SR2 :)

In a perfect world:
buy SR-2 board + 2 quads (hexas definitely not affordable for me)
sell 1 i7, sell e8400, boards, cases that go with them etc.
consolidate remaining i7 to secondary system
use SR-2 as primary workstation
move q9450 to work to replace e8400
gpus - remain put (still happy with my 260s for gaming which is their primary use @ my res, w2710 1920x1080)

Realistically:
don't see any upgrades for awhile. new baby girl coming in less than a month, money will be even tighter. I'd love to consolidate boxen though and go from 3 at home and 1 at work to 2 at home and 1 at work (by getting SR-2) but I just will never have the $$$. Our CC is already kicking my butt too much, need to get that balance down. :D

Just continuing to optimize at this point. I'll get the new single hex rig running tomorrow and optimized this weekend, then decide what is going to end up where. The dual quad core will probably come out of my Three Hundred case and into a rack mount case. One of the single hex core will go into the Three Hundred. I may end up putting the 970 under water if I put it in the desktop case, which is where I am leaning at this point. Then, I could possible get 4.4 GHz out of it. Possible moves from there:

- swap the X5550s out for two more L5640s (+14K ppd)
- swap the X5550s out for L5640s and swap the Asus board for another SR-2 (+60K ppd)
- 1 or 2 more GTX 460s (+11K to +22K ppd)
- stop screwing around with everything for a while (not gonna happen :))

Depending on how I do it, none of these would cost me anything if I can sell all of the stuff I have laying around.

Well, I have done SETI many years back and now F@H. I have a few small plans for a multi GPU set up but as I already have 5 servers( 3 internet radio stations, FTP, FTP BU) going 24/7, I can't go too big. My power bill is really growing here by leaps and bounds. My first priority is to down size all the servers I can, get on a power diet.
Are these new AMD X6's any good at folding? I've built a few for businesses but not really had the chance to play with them.

They are good for folding if you have to stay with AMD.

i7's are the better way to go if you have more hardware flexability.

It all depends on OC, but....

X6 = 15k+ ppd
i7 930 17k+ ppd
i7 930 on -bigadv 25k+ ppd

As this economy has killed off a lot of business for me, I have to take as cheap of a route as I can.
15k.....how much of an OC is that?

Upper 3's If I am remembering correctly.

my next build will be an x6 1075T on a gigabyte 890GX board.. either ill retire this setup and sell it off for what ever money i can get out of it or turn it into a dedicated folder/htpc..

4.0Ghz or higher will net you between 15-16k PPD..

you only need 3.5ghz to complete a bigadv WU but of course since its an x6 its not allowed.. dumb ass PG..

well....for me:

A Mobo for the Q9450 i've had sitting on my desk for a few months, and the PSU to match it....

An H50 for my main rig

After that not sure...

Are these X6's good OCers? Air, water?

great on Air, excellent on water

alot of members are getting 4.0 on either X6 on air, alot are also going over that with water

I think that I am going to build a mini-itx system for my desktop and then sell off my Phenom II 955BE and mobo to fund a new dedicated i7 bigadv box. Besides that, I am planning to replace my last couple of generic rackmount cases with Norco RPC-470s for the excellent airflow and build quality.

I have 2 i7's and a i5-750 ill swap out the i5 for a i7 when funds are there. if i sell my dirtbike i could maybe swing a 970

My bigadv rig contines to acquire the needed parts, just need cpus, ram and os now. Potentiallly blooking at a pair of 460's to replace my 8800gt and gts 250 but they are dependant on funds being available.

Next year my main rig needs an upgrade - i may take my current folder and use that and look to bulldozer for my second rig

Once the wife picks up a new job, i'll start banking money again toward a new hex sometime next year. The ole x3350 just can't keep up with you young whippersnappers anymore running your fancy i7's! So if she gets a decent job i'll probably end up with a mid to high end sandy bridge. If she gets a good job, well then i'll probly go with whatever is coming to replace skt 1366, and probly a hex for that. But those are what, a year out still? AMD needs to drop some competition on intel asap!

As it stands I'm going to be getting a I7, for my day to day use. That will allow me to relegate the q6600 to the media center. Which will replace the (now ancient) inspriron 9300.

March or April I plan to start on a dual socket system. Maybe the sandy bridge hex's will be available, (and affordable enough for consideration:)) However I'm really an AMD fanboy at heart, and I'm hoping that they will have something competitive in the works by then. I'm not a big enough fan to dismiss intel, I just have the underlining hope that AMD will get their butts in gear and pop out something effective and equivalently priced.

Either way, an SR2 system would look killer in my G5 case:eek: Hopefully a 3x120 rad will be able to keep 2 hex's cool. If not I may have to sandwich 2 rads' together.

Upgrade the cooling on the 465s. That's pretty much it until I pay some bills off.

upgrade both workstation/htpc from i7 920 to i7 6-cores.
Might be soon if L5640 works and clocks well.

Video cards I won't be upgrading anytime soon. I don't like gtx460's power consumption, doesn't feel like an upgrade as far as 98gx2 still produces near 12k

I would say around next year, one or two high end sandy bridge systems and could be water cooled.

Dropped in a pair of HS22 today, dual E5540. not as pimp as my 6Cs, but still hard folders.

They're getting some crap projects though, P6050 and P6052. Only worth 4200 credit :(

If you really want a Octo Core Xeon. :D:D

Yeah, and can I borrow your credit card?

I cannot believe what you have to pay even to get a 4U capable processor from Intel when every Magny Cour from AMD is supposed to be 4U capable.

No upgrades planned. Maybe if our first videogames sell really well I can buy something new next year :)

Upgrades? After my last power bill, a downgrade might be in order... :) However, I will definitely jump on Sandy Bridge when that comes out.

I hate to say it, but I might have to let my SR-2 go.

ill take it off your hands.....i've got all the power it needs :)

haha, I'll take it, free electricity FTW! :D

noo

Are you in the northern hemisphere? Winter is coming. Free heat!

For me, I have a Q6600 & 9800GX2 that have been sitting on the sidelines all summer. Once the weather cools I'll fire that baby up to get around 15k ppd

I have a GTX470 on the way which will get around 14k ppd

I'm also hoping to push the overclock on a couple of my rigs, but we'll see about that.

So, I'm at around 110k ppd average right now, I should end up around 140k ppd this winter.

I'm very tempted to grab an X6, but this late into the game I'm probably just going to wait for Bulldozer.

Would you say an X4 630 would out fold an unlocked X3 720 clock for clock? Just curious how much the L3 effects the performance since my 630 can't unlock its L3. I can't get either chip to OC past 2.9 with a dual fan Xig for some reason. Tried on two different mobos, just no luck at all when it comes to the OC lottery.

So when are the octo-cores out? ;)
Intel or AMD? If Intel, then S-2011 or S-1567? The latter is already released and the former in about a year from now, give or take. Buldozer will have several core-iterations and as amdgamer stated you can get a dual or even quad duodeca-core Magny-Cours right now if you're really thirsting for that many cores...

If you really want a Octo Core Xeon. :D:D
I think there are cheaper sources but still exorbitant...

Are you going to have access to the amount of machines you mentioned last month or only a few?

Give it a little time, you'll receive the bigger units later. :)

Eventually... the gear is in the process of being ordered. It'll probably be a month at least before it lands.

I want big unit NOW! :(

I'm rebuilding my dual nehalem systems into windows bigadv today

got one done but it didnt get a bigadv core, just a smp core (P6023) :(

Digging Win 2008 R2 tho, pretty seamless so far
