Post your "Ghetto Mod" pics

That Halloween case has zero ghetto in it unfortunately. Look through this thread for examples of ghetto. Ghetto would be if that halloween case was made of cardboard, the skull was stuck on with duct tape and hot glue, all your wiring was held together with paperclips and masking tape, and the LEDs were actually Christmas tree lights jammed into holes not drilled but made by punch and hammer.

Ghetto means it's a mod that you slapped together with what raw materials you had around into something that is functional or somehow adds functionality. Carefully crafting and painting something is the opposite of ghetto.

There are some ghetto rigs in here, not sure mine is ghetto enough... I'll post some pics tomorrow, if I don't forget.. a brief description:

Cut a whole in the side of the case with a jigsaw to install a 120mm fan, "trimmed" it up with some pliers & vice grips, hole now has rough uneven edges.. :D

Some of the PSU molex connectors have been stripped and connected to 80mm fans to make them work.. using duck tape to hold the wires together. One of my fan headers died, had to revert to some... extraordinary... measures for cooling.. :)

Rear exhaust fan is zip tied to the case.

Foam weather stripping on some of the case edges, used for "sound deadening" and to stop rattles...

Front 80mm intake grill removed with wire cutters for maximum airflow...

GPU is a GeForce FX5200 128MB AGP card...

CD-RW quit, so I threw this:
in there, it's a CDROM from a Compaq EZ2200:

Think that's about it.. :)

Ok I get it. I saw a lot of other cases that didn't fit that profile so I was confused but it didn't cost much to make that mod. The PC was an obsolete piece of junk and the materials didn't cost much just some hard work...

Does this count as ghetto?

Made a faceplate for my fan controller from a drive bay cover. Tried using black nail polish to cover up the scratches from when my drill went on a little dance across the surface. Didn't work out so well.

i've got a Ghetto Modded iPhone 2G 8GB........the top "power button" was pushed in permently after a drop(honestly it wasnt that high that the drop happened)....so i took it apart and figured out something in the housing was pushing it wrong, so it has to be slightly open.....well nothign a little bit of duct tape cant fix :) ...... best of all, the vibration worked like crap before, and now it works great....

Enjoy the pictures that will make steve jobs shit himself :p

btw, it is better now.....it still runs great with no issues whatsoever

Ha. I had forgotten about my biggest, ghettoist ghetto mod and I've been sitting on it the whole time.

I wanted to cut it into a circle so it would be even with the chair base, but the wood is so damn hard and thick that I just gave up. I went through 6 jigsaw blades just doing the front and middle pieces. Maybe I'll finish it and stain it one day, but for now I don't care anymore. It's ugly but it works.

man i bet that chair is much more stable and solid than the crap i pick up from staples every other year

This chair is awesome. Shopko has them with a matching footstool for $99 (what I paid a couple months ago anyway, may have been a sale price.) Unless you're 5'5" and under, though, you'll have to raise it a bit as it's too low for most desks.

So I ran out of drive bays... I kind of like this setup though because it directs my intake fan flow straight to the GPU. :D

Decided that I wasn't going to pay for a docking station for my Samsung Moment, so I took some different sized paper binding clips, an unused metal book shelf and decided to get creative. Here is the end result.

The phone does not budge at all when trying to move it from side to side (i.e. swiping or tapping the touchscreen) or when pressing the call/hangup buttons while it is docked.

I love all the things you could do with the big paper clips, I have a bunch for wire management using the clips and the holes themselves :D

Yes, that's a standard ATX motherboard sitting sideways on an anti-static bag in an old desktop case that used to house a proprietary IBM motherboard with riser cards and a pentuim III 450. Note the cables running sideways to exit in the upper right corner over the fortron source 200w atx power supply(also added afterwards) The black box is for component output from the low profile GeForce 6200

The Ghetto Fileserver

All housed inside of a lovely subwoofer box, this little number features two fans, a removable motherboard tray from some old HP something or other, and 4 hard drives stacked on top of each other with little balls of electrical tape to allow airflow between them. One of my favorite features was the power switch...old cd-rom audio cable attached to the motherboard header with the other end duct taped to the outside of the box..a very specially bent staple would allow me to bridge the pins in the connector for long enough to power it on or off...yes, I said off...no ACPI on this box! Don't mind all the beer bottles, I used to brew my own beer and would save them to bottle my brews. Even though the ghetto mods might insinuate otherwise, I'm not that much of a slob, I promise :p

The ghetto SCSI box

Old Compaq case, mostly gutted...two PSUs wired together to power all the drives...one is duct taped to the top of the case, although it's difficult to see in this pic. Drives duct taped and stacked pretty much wherever I can fit them. I built this when I wanted to learn about SCSI several years ago...it served it's purpose. Note the hard drive duct taped to the top of the PSU that's actually inside the case. Also the power switch board lighty thingy from some other computer sticking out of the front at the bottom...complete with electrical tape to keep it from shorting against the bare metal.

These were all several years ago when I was getting my start in IT...my ghetto modding days are mostly over now...these days it's more efficient to just buy something to accomplish the task at hand rather than spending my precious free time constructing something.

It was fun building all these contraptions though :)

So how many food stamps do I get?

A ghetto mod on my new desktop.

I couldn't fit the standard 200mm side intake fan because the H70 rad and interior fan are too large but I still wanted to flow some air towards my video cards. So, I did this:

How is that working? Those scotch mounting pads don't hold up too well in my experience, especially when cut into small pieces. I used them to hold a filter to a fan and it fell off after a day.

There's a screw holding in the one corner, so it's in place pretty well from that. The double sided tape was just to make sure it doesn't move (wasn't going to anyway with the screw tight) and doesn't make noise from hitting the side panel. So far so good!

They are definitely conductive, so I recommend turning that machine off and removing the bag asap

Yeah, it always is a good laugh to see people thinking that antistatic bags will somehow protect their technology. The only way for an antistatic bag to offer any protection at all is if the component is inside the bag and it is sealed as a faraday cage and the component is unpowered.

It's not designed as any kind of magical protective material of the future for people to lay their harddrives and videocards on.
