Hey guys, I have been out of the loop for a while and could use some help. I currently have a 9800 GTX+, well actually 2 which I have tried SLI, however one of them always gets too hot and games crash even when Rivatuned to 100% fan speed. (I get a freeze with a high pitched sound) I finally gave up and opted to use just one card. The 2 in SLI ran Mafia 2 great until it crashes! I am thinking of getting this card to replace the 9800...

It comes with Mafia 2 so I'd be killing 2 bird's with one stone. Do you think that the 465 will run the game as well as the 2 9800's? With only 1 9800 the game looks OK but nothing like it does in SLI .

Thanks for any input!

Avoid the GTX465 and get the GTX460 1GB...not only is it faster, but it runs cooler

OK, thank you for the advice. Too bad none of the 460's come with Mafia 2. I guess my main concerns are; Will I see a significant advantage between the 9800 GTX+ and the 460?

A GTX 460 will destroy a 9800GTX+, and be a good bit faster than 9800GTX+ SLI.

No. The GTX 460 is only 50% faster than a GTS 250 (aka 9800GTX+):

If you consider how good SLI scaling is, this means SLI 9800GTX+ cards would be noticeably faster.

The GTX 460 is definitely a good upgrade, but don't expect EXACTLY the same settings as you were able to run with the SLI setup. That said, an SLI GTX 460 setup will destroy any game you throw at it :D

Fifty percent increase in FPS in general is a good upgrade.

Well yeah, but the OP tried Mafia II running SLI, and it is that performance level he craves.

This is why I say to him: prepare to have slightly less performance than the SLI setup gave you. The GTX 460 is still a huge increase over the single 9800GTX+.

Hmmm. You all bring up great points here. I'm wondering if it would be more economical to get a newer Mobo with wider spacing than the rediculously spaced PCI-E ports than the ASUS P5N-D provides hence creating more airflow and then just using my existing SLI setup? Possibly any suggestion on a proven 775 mobo?

Ouch, was just looking for a mobo replacement at the Egg and apparently there are only 2 boards available... the one I already have and a X-fire Gigabyte board. It's only been a year and a half and I already can't upgrade without doing a full (new) build. Sometimes I wish technology would slow down! LOL

If you want a 465, only get one that can successfully unlock to 470, otherwise you're wasting your money.
Do your research, there are certain brands and specific models that will unlock like 100%.
If you don't want to gamble, then go with the 460.

I'm going to tack on some discussion here since this thread is related to my current situation...

I'm looking to extend the life of my 1GB 9800GTX+ by adding a 1GB GTS250 to run them in SLI (I've read it's completely possible since the gts250 is just a rebrand, but yell at me if I'm wrong.)

I'm adding a second 25" HP 2509 monitor, and since my 9800GTX+ is starting to lag in some games (read: Starcraft 2) I think I need to give it a little kick until I can save up another $3k to totally build a new computer with an i7, SSD, and all the new fun stuff.

Now, should I spend $120 or so on the GTS250 to run SLI, or just man up and put in a GTX460?

I wouldn't bet on the GTS 250 working with your 9800GTX even if it is a rebrand. Not all GTS 250's are 9800GTX+'s, some are 9800GTX's with no plus. Just sell your 9800 and get a 460 1GB because that will work! The SLI possibility is not a guaranteed solution that will work.

SLI generally requires identical models to work. So get a 9800GTX+, not a GTS250 if you want to run them in SLI. Or sell your 9800GTX+ and buy a 460. Honestly it's probably better to sell off the old card and upgrade to something new.
Because 9800GTX+ 1GB are EOL and buying one new would cost the same as a 460, the only other feasible way is to try to find one cheap used.

the only difference between 9800gtx and 9800gtx+ was the fact that it used 55nm shrink and a corresponding speed bump. ALL gts250 cards use the same 55nm chip that was in the 9800gtx+ so there is no way a gts250 could be a plain 9800gtx re badged. now some gts250 cards could have different clocks but the chip itself is from the 9800gtx+.

+1

The GTS250 is a 9800GTX+, but as said, it has had a die shrink and uses less power overall.

Similar to how the 9800GT is a rebadge of the 8800GT, but with all the bugs taken out. ;)

I think a lot of the confusion stemmed from GPUz, which didn't properly show if a chip was 65nm or 55nm. I dunno if this has been fixed, now. It always showed my 9800gt55nm (Bx die - I took it apart myself) as a 65nm unit.

I have a 465 and it runs pretty good what resolution are you running? Mine runs quite, my case has good airflow. Honestly I run tri 470's in another case has good airflow and they get a little noisy during game play but nothing bad. If you really want mafia II I say get it(465) the 460 and 465 trade blows for which is faster after rebate they are about the same price but it saves you dropping 50 for the game so that makes it an even better deal.

I read that the PNY 465 cards all unlock to a 470. Well, I got a PNY 465 and it unlocked to a 470, so I'm very happy.
