3 weeks is considered much in the US?
In most of Europe you get 5 weeks each year, 4 in the summer and 1 in the winter
Paid of course, I just had my first week of work after one month summer vacation here in Sweden

Weird - ya, pretty lame as far as pranks go... Honestly, not having played any Sega games for several years now, I didn't even know (or care) for sure if Sega was still in business... really looks like this whole thing was meant to be more of an Ad for the company than anything else. And I guess it succeeds at that - now I know they're still in business, and have some mildly talented designers working for them. And this prank vid also probably saved them a bunch of money on producing an actual advertising campaign.
Oh, and yeah, pretty sure this was also their creative way of telling that guy he doesn't work there any more... what is he supposed to do in that cube now??

Yea 2 weeks is standard if you get any at all. Usualy 2 weeks sick leave too, which typically does not accumulate so it's use it or lose it. Most lower wage jobs don't even offer PTO. many companies right now have cut sick leave and vacation too. My Last company had us working 80 hour weeks followed by removing all accumulated sick leave, followed by layoffs.
New company just has PTO, no official sick leave or vacation, and we get 4 weeks a year (accumulated after you have worked there for a year of course).

I've got 4 weeks a year, plus 5 options day, and my sick leave builds (up to 200 hours or something) based on my days/hours worked. I'll gain another vacation week next year too. Sick leave rolls over year to year, vacation is use it or it get's cashed out when the year rolls over.
Dunno about the rest of the US, my time seems normal to me. Wife has 6 weeks vacation + 5 option days, I'm always playing catch up.

I thought the prank was cool albeit a tad overkill. I was hoping for a better reaction from the victim.
Re: Vacation - I get about 5 weeks total vacation btw (4 weeks vacation, 1 week "personal days") and "unlimited sick". I'm in IT of course. I'm definitely thankful for it because I know it isn't the norm. On top of it management is very understanding of personal needs so it isn't a pain to utilize the time either.

I don't mind being the one to pull off that prank. It may take a lot of time and effort, but I think its fun to do something else every once in awhile rather than just working all day everyday
Where i work you start off after 1 year with 1 week vacation, after 3 years you get 2 weeks, after 5 you get 3. only get 1 week sick time.
as for the prank. I also see that as a lot of work time being wasted. First you have to think it up, then create all the little displays and stuff. I'd say that is probably at least a full day or two worth of work there that they put into the entire prank. Times a few people so you have at least a weeks worth of man hours put into this. The pictures of packing peanuts in side the cubile here in the thread, that is a good prank. It takes little time to setup and execute. Of course the cleanup when the person gets back and tries to do their job is going to be awhile.
Yes you need to have some down time and fun at work. But there is a certain point in which you are just waiting company time and money. Its like working for a cab company and thinking it would be a funny prank to let the air out of all the tires.
Now if they did this over their lunch and other breaks during the course of the 3 weeks then it wouldn't be that bad. Overall, it did turn out nice, I just have to agree that this is a waste of compnay times and also thought the same as a few others about the quality of their games. I myself haven't found a sonic game i have liked since the old 2D games. They changed Robnic's name to Eggman. One of the things i always felt they lost is that the new games are far to linear. Most of them move forwardward for you and you have little control over anything other than jumping to get coins. While the 2D games where fast paced, you have different paths to go and could find hidden mini levels to get the parts of the crystal to become super sonic. Too bad they wouldn't put the effort into making a new sonic game that people actually want to play that they did this prank.

Before everyone goes running off to emigrate (yes I spelled it right, means to leave) to Europe don't forget that Spain's economy collapsed, Great Britain is looking in to tightening immigration and let's not forget that all those days off and health care are paid for with higher taxes. You're not missing much if you haven't seen the video. IIRC, it shows 4 - 6 employees emptying out a vacationing employee's cubicle and spending a lot of time making Sonic the Hedehog backgrounds and items (trees, pcs, rings...). The guy's workspace ends up looking like a Sonic level. He returns and smiles. Pretty mediocre for what probably amounts to 40 - 50 employee hours.
Vacation: I generally only take about one solid week off, but I come and go as I please - so it amounts to a lot of time off. Plus a lot of my trips are a combination of work / personal time. Being an owner does have its benefits.

Actually, that had nothing to do with it and to be honest, it's scary that you honestly believe this.
Sure, that's partly to blame b/c of low productivity and high gov.'t spending. What do you attribute the PIIGS' financial situation to?
It has nothing to do with their financial situation. In fact, many European countries have long since abandoned their shorter working days to compete. The US is the reason for their financial crisis. Europe's financial sectors are heavily infused with the industrial sector...that's been their business model for ages now and why they have trouble bouncing back from market corrections. Europe also has it's own subprime crisis which is partially caused by the Euro's adoption and it's effect on interest rates. Ireland, Spain, and a host of other countries who whose economies were not built on a strong foundation to begin with reaped the benefits of low interest rates which were originally developed for the different economic models of financially secure nations such as Germany. This led to their own housing boom. Their financial institutions put themselves in a position of great vulnerability to market correction. In short rapid credit growth, low risk premiums, abundant availability of liquidity, strong leveraging, soaring asset prices and the development of real estate bubbles screwed them. They were just as arrogant as we were in thinking that they were immune to any type of correction....like us they thought the good times would keep on rolling so when our financial system collapsed it took theirs down with us. Vacation time and work ethic had absolutely NOTHING to do with any of it.

Having lived in Europe and quasi-Europe (New Zealand) I can tell you from experience what I think is at the heart of this breakdown. I believe its media and political correctness for the sake of productivity that has spread itself from the office and into the streets causing communication problems between every layer of society... nobody talks about the most important things to them anymore.. politics, faith (or lack there of), art, history, family, nationality or for that matter anything requiring an opinion or taking a position, outside of something as innocuous as a sport.
At the same time we've been convinced that we're in competition with everyone around us, neighbors, other companies, other people's kids, even friends.. and we treat them in our thoughts as just. We amplify this by our incessant consumption of news that makes us fearful of everyone.. fearful to come near them, much less share an opinion.
We've become people defined by cognitive dissonance... our view of ourselves as open, social and accepting, yet struggling with our impulses to keep everyone around us at an arm's length.
It sucks for what we discover only when its too late as being the real meaning of quality of life, but for our productive early lives, this is the most efficient way to produce effective workers.. always in competition, and never trusting enough to band together.
Its only in the end that we realize that we're better off trusting people, with their faults, instead of trying to control our lives in dehumanizing but predictable corporate environments.
The difference is that when corporations ask people to give up their traits in Europe, the people resist, and the corporations just keep pointing at how efficient those American corporations are where the people gave up their opinions and need to be with and interact with people other than customers.
What I'm trying to tell you is that there is a different way of life and work than in the states, and its better for you than you think.. where your boss would be more surprised if you didn't take your vacation than if you did and people care about what you think and don't shy from sharing their thoughts.. no matter how inefficient it makes them.
Just travel for a period of longer than one week in a foreign country and try and talk as much as possible.. the lack of walls around people outside of the US will rub off on you, and you might feel disappointed when you return. Then imagine what life & work could be like without those walls, and put in some applications for positions in a place like New Zealand, as I did, after grad school.
