At all? Even using a uxtheme patcher you cannot change the theme. All i get is basic, classic and a few accessibility themes.

This is just beyond silly to disable basic functionality like this...
 
Anytime Upgrade to Home Premium. If you want the extra features, get the extra version.

Changing the desktop background is hardly an extra feature...

Not paying $80 to be able to change my background and the color of the start menu. This is ridiculous.
 
There are programs that will change your background for you. I used one on my netbook and it works well. Never tried a new theme though.

This program should get you started.

If linux didnt perform like shit on this netbook and lose me 1/4 my battery life i would.

I ran 4 different ditros on it over the course of the last month and its just bad. Linux support for mobile devices is severely lacking.

Seriously, the limitations of starter are described up front. You want the extra features from a commercial product, then spend the money for the anytime upgrade.

What was i thinking when i bought a netbook in a brown box i should have known. :rolleyes:

Its $80 to upgrade to home premium. Its $100 to buy it from newegg. Hmm the pricing makes sense right?

$80 to change the theme and background... Makes total sense to me...

If you look for deals windows 7 can be had for around $30 (although kind of hard to find now days), if you are a student you can get windows 7 pro for $30 from MS.

Someone else has stated that you're not paying $80 for the ability to change the desktop background? That it's just one of many things that are different between starter and home premium? That your comment about it being ridiculous to have to pay $80 to change the background is disingenuous at best?

Now that that nonsense is out of the way. I never said the only difference was changing the wallpaper and theme... All i want to do with this machine that it does not already do is change the theme and I am not going to pay $80 for the privilege.

So can you please keep your condescending shitty attitude to your damn self if you dont have an actual answer to my question. Thanks.

Odd, the post you quoted earlier was me pointing out that you weren't paying solely for the background changing, but all the other stuff included in the upgrade. So I had already said something 'new' at that point.

At the risk of getting fired upon, I'll try to say this calmly and politely. If you take a moment to read up on what Windows 7 Starter is, and what it was intended for, you will realize that changing wallpaper isn't a big deal, nor is it a necessary feature to be included in something like Starter, that's basically one small step above Windows Embedded.

Could it have been included without slowing the OS down? Maybe...but the devices intended to run Starter aren't meant to be loading large graphic files each and everytime. I'm not saying this to be an ass, or add to the flames in this thread, but you should have looked into Windows 7 Basic instead. If it was me, and many others reading on this site...and we saw Starter as the included OS, we would have kept on shopping around. We can bash Starter all we want, but it is what it is, and that's why most of us wouldn't be running it...even on a Netbook.

No, its basic functionality that is forced off. If you can change the wallpaper and theme on a freaking cell phone then there is no justifiable reason why this netbook should not be capable of the same. Win 7 starter is a joke and obviously now that i know better i would never consider another device with it. But none of that helps me NOW.

I should have looked into it before i bought it. I get it. But responses like this help me in no way and serve absolutely no purpose.

Windows 7 Starter does not allow the user to alter the wallpaper or the theme so, the concept of it being "basic functionality" means Jack Freakin' Shit at that point - it's not a basic function of that OS so your line of thinking just ran smack dab into the brick wall of logic, sorry.

The issue doesn't lie with the Netbook, it lies with the specific OS, and the analogy with the cell phone is just... well, I don't know what it is but it's not relevant at all, that much I can say for certain.

My suggestion about a Linux distro still stands: it'll add zero cost to the Netbook you've already got (except some time and effort), it'll do most anything anyone needs done with such a device including extensive theming capabilities and obviously the wallpaper is alterable to suit your needs and wants just as easily.

You seem to be highly focused on that cost perspective so... Linux is a free solution to all the issues you've mentioned in this thread.

But you know this now hence the thread has served a purpose after all. ;)

Changing the wallpaper has been basic functionality in every OS with a GUI for over 20 years now. I dont care what 7 starter has its a joke that something so simple is BLOCKED. Not missing just BLOCKED. Even Aero is installed and ready to go just locked out.

Its ridiculous and all the microsoft apologists have nothing but excuses and stupid defenses for it.

If you want the extra features, you pay the extra money. I'm not seeing what's unfair or difficult to comprehend about this. Would you rather they didn't offer you the choice of starter and you just got charged another $60 for the netbook?

For what i payed for this netbook there is absolutely no reason under the sun why it dont have a full OS on it.

You can buy a $400 laptop with win 7 home premium now you tell me why a $400 netbook gets cheaped out of a normal OS.

I dont know what kind of sheeple you guys are but anyone that considers changing a wallpaper in an OS an "extra feature" needs to get a handle on the fanboy bullshit. Thats beyond ridiculous.

Because your netbook has smaller, lighter, less power-consuming parts which are more difficult and expensive to produce? Or because people like you will pay it and the company wants higher profit margins. Either is perfectly reasonable.

Its a netbook it has the exact same hardware 90% of the rest of netbooks have.

Atom processor, 1 gig of ram and some wifi.
