PS3 officially sells over 3 million more consoles than 360 worldwide in last 12 month

I keep scratching my head because I can't figure out why Microsoft wouldn't put a Blu-ray drive into the new slimmer 360... hopefully they will with their next console.

Its because MS along with Apple think Digital Distribution is the way forward and want Bluray to die, whilst i agree with them on the digital distribution part there is probably another 5-10 years before the whole world can just click and stream a 480p/720p/1080p movie along with 5.1 sound. (bandwidth limits/people still have not got sufficient broadband speeds or broadband at all etc)

yeah like MS is going to fragment their user base.........

Doesn't Sony own some kind of patent on the blu-ray tech?
Plenty of them, as to many other companies. Blu-ray itself is owned / licensed by a consortium of 20 different companies though, and Sony wouldn't have any real say on who they could licence the format to (Microsoft actually holds a few of the patents on tech used in blu-ray players too). Sony actually "owned" more of DVD's IP than they do blu-ray... and besides, I don't think most people realise that Sony and MS cross licence tech / work together all over the place.

If MS want to use blu-ray next gen, it wont be a problem.

How would that fragment anything? 360 games are DVD, HD-DVDs are on their external drive...All it would do is add more appeal to the 360. It would be stupid for Microsoft to not put it into their console eventually. Digital Distribution is okay for some things but not for all games. I still think disc media will be around for a while.

I originally bought my PS3 mainly as a blu ray player, but I have found myself playing console exclusive games on it as well.

game makers would not be able to use the blu ray drive, and people that just wanted a gaming console would need to pay more.

simple

you would have a group of people that had the feature and a group that did not. I mean all you have to do is look at Sony and how they fragmented their user base..lol

some systems with card readers
some with PS2 compatability
some without card readers
some with no PS2 compatability

to be fair, the xbox360 slim removed the stinking memory cards, too (in favor of more USB ports for USB flash drives, however).

Oh wow, Blu Ray gets more mainstream and a Blu Ray player starts selling more.

News!

erm
360 with wifi
360 without wifi
360 with hard drive
360 without hard drive

whats your point?

to be just as fair they come with 4GB internal storage which is > any memory card

erm
360 with wifi
360 without wifi
360 with hard drive
360 without hard drive

whats your point?

lets see here

First off MS never took away a feature (Ie you could still buy a hdd for your console or buy a console with a hdd for more $) from the 360. @$199 Arcade has everything except for hdd same cannot be said for the PS3 as NONE of them produced now have B/C with PS2 titles

At first MS had no console to compete with the Wii so they made the acrade that problem was solved

Second wifi is a feature added to later consoles (all currently produced 360s have it)

while MS took away the ability to use Memory cards they made up for it by giving the console 4GB internal storage (that's like having 8 512MB memory cards)

again you point is?

Just because your console has a blue ray drive doesn't mean you have to put all the games on blue ray. I just recently bought a PS3 because the new xbox didn't hold any features besides WIFI that my current xbox can't due. Wifi wasn't worth forking out more dough and I needed a blue ray player.

Man give me a fuckin' break you tried to take a stab at the PS3 for removing feature's and the 360 more or less does the exact same thing. Both consoles with the bare bones components are the cheapest, $199 360 or $299 for the PS3. Both of those options will give you the least accessories built in, whether it be HD size, wifi, or card readers, etc.....

The only difference is that all PS3's come with HD's and wifi. Your argument is that MS doesn't remove them, they just don't put them in the lower bundles, so they can charge outrageous prices for them later when you do need an HD or wifi.

And the arcade 360 unit still does not ship with wifi.

The PS3 has always had more features, just bringing up the whole BC removal shit shows how desperate you were to create some flames, but whatever, you should play the games and enjoy both systems like myself, because when you start bringing up the removal of the card readers man.....

it's just pathetic.

If you followed his conversation, his biggest removal was PS2 compatibility. He just responded to what someone else posted grasping for straws. And yes it's grasping for straws. Wifi isnt' needed for gaming. And MS has help alleviate the Harddrive systems/No harddrive systems by giving more options (hook up your own usb and able to install, Flash memory already on system)

While all those other little removals of the little things that don't matter as much from the PS3, I'll hate it if my original launch PS3 couldn't be fixed mainly because of PS2 removal. BC is a big freaking deal.

No, the 360 doesn't do "more" of the exact same thing... Microsoft did "less" and chose to add features that makes the "less" part insignificant. If I'm not mistaken, the new arcade will have wifi, 4gb built in memory, and everything the current 360's have minus the hard drive.

Woooo I feel secure about my purchase! /Fanboygasm!

I honestly don't see why anyone cares. At this point both consoles are pretty long in the tooth. I play exclusives on the consoles and anything is available on the pc on the pc.

Anyone know the spread in the US? Regardless of numbers, it always feels like I have more friends playing the Xbox.

outselling the 360 worldwide by a couple mil is no feat, its still considered a complete failure from its initial expectations of continuing the dominance of the previous consoles.
bottom line is MS must be pretty satisfied with the progress they made with the 360, Sony obviously isnt

They chose the publish this before the xbox360 slim sales figures came in, likely.

The 360 lost billions, is currently in second place, but looks like it will end up in third. I don't know how MS could be satisfied with that.

Sony may have lost more money on the PS3, but at least it won them the format war.

This. MS chose to support HDDVD in the most meaningless way possible. However, digital distribution works, IMO. I'm just curious why I still cannot buy most of the films I want across MS Zune in HD, yet I can rent them so?

Whilst this is true, the amount of money they'll make over the entire life of blu-ray wont even come close to covering the money they lost in the gaming division.

someone already pointed this out in previous threads but MS has been making a profit ont he 360 for some time now and have actually overcome their investment.

can you get a ps3 for $199?
can you get a ps3 with wireless N?

MS has not removed any features other than memory cards and as explained before they give you the same space as 8 of them on the replacement console.

at the PS3 entry pricepoint of 299, the 360 has more space and faster wireless vs blu-ray and user replacable hdd for the PS3....so it's a fairly even match

at MS entry point of $199, you get a 360 with no hdd but you get 4GB storage and wireless n.....where is sony's console? Oh, that's right there isn't one.

As stated earlier, at $199 the Wii is the only competitor and while the 360 is the clear hardware winner, it still cannot really compete with the overall family oriented factor of the wii nor can it compete with it's unique game play.... (lol before you say Kinect, that requires a $299 bundle (arcade), $399 bundle (s console) or an extra $150 (for current console owners))*

So at least if you are going to try and make someone look stupid, get your facts straight.

Btw, one thing that I like about my Wii and my 360 is that I can play ALL of my NGC games on my Wii and a fair amount of original xbox games my 360..

With my PS3 I cannot play ps2 games but I can play ps1 games lol wtf is up with that lol....

Okay man I know your a raving Xbot and that's fine I have 2 360's myself, but you do realize the new arcade isnt out yet right. So yes I was right, there is no 360 Arcade right NOW that has built in wifi. And they just added it on top of that. So they've been charging consumers almost 100 bucks for the wireless add-on for what 4 years? Yeah I would say it's about time they started adding it:p

And I wasn't trying to make you look stupid, you made yourself look stupid when you mentioned Sony removing the card reader as an argument.

And you think a $199 360 is comparable to a $299 PS3 because it's Wifi (N) is a little faster and it has 4GB of storage. Compared to a PS3 with a upgradeable 160hd WiFi(G) and Bluray? Do you have a 360? No disc based game will install on 4gb of HD space, and 360 drives are extremely loud, so if I can't install, it's a no go. I mean what are you going to put on 4gb? After game saves what it good for 2 demo's and no downloadable content? The 4gb's are worthless to someone who has LIVE.

So you still have to spend $130 bucks for the 250gb HD and even after that you'll have spent $30 bucks more than and PS3, and you still want have bluray. But yeah I would take wireless N over G, vs having a Bluray drive opposed to DVD lol.

^give it up ok becuase you just are not getting the point.....

sorry pulling the card reader, 2 usb ports, ps2 backwards compatability, the ability to load another os...is not the same as MS removing memory card readers and giving you 4GB of space

uhm now to the next point

MS has a 360 at the $199 price point sony does not

now for the final point

at the $299 price point it's pretty much a draw imho as you trade 250GB plus Wireless N for Bluray +120GB + the ability to change out your drive.

I did not compare a $199 xbox to a $299 PS3

see "at the PS3 entry pricepoint of 299, the 360 has more space and faster wireless vs blu-ray and user replacable hdd for the PS3....so it's a fairly even match"

Edit: BTW if Sony were to sell a PS3 @199 it would be game over for MS as console + your own 2.5" HDD SATA drive is less expensive than $299 MS console with HDD

Their entertainment division lost $1.28 billion the first year of the 360 and $1.89 billion the second. http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=8118 While the division has been making money the last 3 years, they haven't overcome their losses. It's still almost $2 billion in the red.

Don't forget they also lost $4 billion on the first Xbox.

 That is an invailid argument. The newer 360's disc drives are very tolerable... Also, after the 4gb fills up you can just go buy an 8gb flash drive for real cheap, heck 16gb are even pretty cheap now a days. ;)

Might as well close/lock this thread now before the PC-only gamers start chiming in, too.

*Some* of the new 360 drives are tolerable. The new Jasper in my house sounds worse than some of the older first gen 360s.
