The Official "Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty" Thread

Hello everyone, the forums have been down for a little while, and during that time Wings of Liberty has gone live! That's right, the beta is over and we can now begin enjoying the full features of the game. I thought I would start this thread so we could consolidate all discussion on the game. Feel free to post any opinions, news, information or otherwise, the idea is that this will be the [H]ardforum source for all things Starcraft 2.

P.S. If you need someone to play online with, post your Moniker and ID number then I'll add you to the list.

Try creating a public google docs spreadsheet list. That way you dont need to manually update each time someone posts with cells for email, alias or ID. Trying to figure out how to create smurf accounts like how it was in WC3. Im assuming 1 key+1 email= 1 account?

I got mine for like $45 shipped from gamestop using one of their coupons, granted it's still enroute, but at least I didn't pay $60..

I bought this on launch day. The store I got it from had $20 off the game for the first day of release, and because I preordered it, I got the discount AND a free t-shirt.

I've only played it for a few hours, just the single-player campaign. Loving it to bits so far.

£39.99 at game in the UK

HAHAHA, no.

I'll give the singleplayer a whirl and if that's good I might buy the game if it drops to normal game price of £30 in the UK. I'm a bit miffed all round with this game, excluding LAN play is incredibly lame, I hear BNET2 is lacking in a lot of ways which is astonishing considering it's competative nature and time in development. I also hear the graphics are lacking for a modern game, AA doesn't work etc. Quite a few people have reported crashes and my SC fanboy friend says he's not impressed with the campaign so far, I think he's about 1/2 way through it.

Starcraft 2 is the same price here as most new PC release games (AU$100) before the discount. Guess we're lucky...

I even tried it on an 8800 gt rig with no luck. Though i'm not sure about nvidias newest lineup.

to enabled AA on nvidia cards, rename the exe file to SC2.exe. Then create a new profile for it via the nvidia control panel and it should work just fine

Were you really going to play LAN games at a place where there is no internet connection?

Graphics lacking? Who cares. The game isn't about graphics

Your friend is nuts. Hands down one of the best single player gaming experiences I've ever had.

I'd like the choice to, I'd like the option to play on a fast lag free connection rather than doing the stupid thing and forcing all players to be online.

I care, graphics aren't everything but it doesn't mean we can simply dismiss them.

Meh, completely subjective. He was irritated with the timed missions being lame and a few other things. The overall feeling was that it wasn't worth the 12 year wait to carry on the story.

I certainly don't see justification for a £40 price tag, jesus christ, that's worse that MW2

The graphics aren't that bad. I've completed the campaign and while it wasn't perfect, it's definitely the best RTS campaign I've played. Not having LAN is a really poor 'deal breaker'. I don't think anyone's happy with that decision, but personally it is far from a deal breaker for me. I have bigger issues with battle.net 2.0 itself.

I wouldn't call it deal breaking in any practical way, however if you're standing up for traditional gaming then it's important. Truth is our LAN partys are mostly at my house and I have 50mbit fibre, soon to be 100mbit fibre. Lag probably wouldn't even be an issue however that doesn't mean it could be, it doesn't mean we've sacraficed something just to try and stop a handful of pirates. Sometimes the principle of the thing is important.

The rest of the game, meh, I'm not a massive RTS fan but I do like to dabble, but they're not getting £40 of my money, it's £35 on play.com which is a little better but I'm still not shelling out over the odds, especially for something which looks 2-3 years old.

I think i'll save my money for Diablo 3, that might be worth the extra 33% asking price blizzard are after, who knows.

honestly i dont think MW2 was even worth half the price just the single player.. so much shit was broken in the single player that it was annoying.. though i havent played SC2 yet.. but when it comes to RTS games the single player is useless to begin with.. all its really suppose to be is a tutorial to teach you how to play the game basically and give you a glimps of the storyline and what the games about.. they are about the multiplayer and thats it..

The SC2 single player is very different actually... There are a bunch of units that don't exist in multiplayer that exist in single player and the research / armory system obviously break any sort of balance that exists in MP.

Also, people need to stop complaining about the price. Blizzard games have been $60 since Diablo2 / Warcraft3. End of story, stop posting about it because it just makes you look silly.

Game kicks ass, never played SC1 but I will most definitely be playing this one for a while.

As for graphics.. they are great for what they need to be. The ingame cutscenes are amazing and the game while not revolutionary looks good.

Price? If you can't afford $60 for a video game you need a new job or a new hobby, wtf.

This game is a WIN for PC Gamers and if you appreciate PC gaming you will go out and buy this EXCLUSIVE immediately.

Didnt the first one come out on the N64?

Damnit why is this a physical game, having to go to a store is blah after the steam sales! Maybe over the weekend. Unless it comes to steam...

Just one question, I heard the servers were locked to location so that players from korean couldn't play ones in america, europe etc. So if I didn't want to play the 3 players in europe would I have to make an american account? Internet only play is a pain in the ass,,,with my 300 ping...

A bunch of PC games have been *ported* to the console after but they have never really ever been considered the "real game". Kinda of like Command and Conquer on the Playstation.

Yup servers are locked. In fact if I remember correctly the game is linked to the continent of purchase too. So an NA version of the game can only register NA and Europe version can only register Europe ect..

Here in Canada the french Canadians get to use the France server :D

I just picked this up 2 days ago. It's my first RTS ever, and its a blast. I constantly get my ass kicked, I am not good at all, but I also have almost no idea what I am doing. I've been watching some videos and trying to learns things, so I am slowly progressing. But yeah, I can definitely see myself getting addicted to this very quickly.

Yeah. I played Half-Life on the PS2...horrendous. Controls are just awful. Of course, it's the sort of thing that makes PC gamers smile considering how many stupid console ports get slapped out each year.

The Australian version is only partially region-locked. We are in the Asia/Oceania region, but can play with North American players. I guess gamers here got up in arms about getting limited to all the uber professional Korean Starcraft players, and Blizzard had mercy on us.

You can buy directly from Blizzard website. So far it doesnt looks like this will be available at Steam.

This game is perfect. The first one came out when I was 16, so its like reliving my childhood. Love how they did the single-player campaign and the challenges.

Online results have been mixed. I suck and wasn't in beta, but remember some of the old strategies. Initially placed in the silver league for 1v1, which sounds about right. Hopefully I will float to a place where I can win a few, lose a few.

Favorite new feature is the replays and post-game stats. Its really helpful when you get owned to see the actual build order and moves of the other guy, learn and improve from that.

The game is excellent. I'm only 4 missions deep into the campaign due to RL commitments this week, but I've had such fun with it exploring the different parts of the ship and choosing my upgrades and research.

I'm god awful at multi, but it's still fun. Need to get through my placement matches so I can get dumped into bronze to play with the slow folk like me :p

The only complaints I've heard that have any validity are about battlenet 2.0 and not about the game itself. Blizz has promised to rectify most of the problems with bnet, so I'm fine waiting for the fixes.

Well worth the 60 bucks and I'd honestly be fine paying another 60 for each of the expansions.

Such a fantastic game, I course I expected that coming from Blizzard. :D

How do you view custom games like in warcraft3tft? I wanna play some custom maps like tower defense.

LAN party Tower Defense in WC3 still occupies some of my weekends.

No LAN definitely = no buy from me.

Good thing for blizzard is that the LAN crew is small and they will loose little revenue.

Your huge loss.

Wow, I really suck at 1v1 :p. I got dumped into bronze, but I keep getting killed my mass void rays. I've just got to remember to build mass marines to counter. Also, what's a good way to counter mass hydras? I only came up against it once, but a marine/marauder mix didn't seem to do much.

I played some 2v2 with a friend last night and it was fun, but my connection dropped in the middle of the game. I've actually lost 3 1v1 games due to my connection dropping. It's getting really annoying. I need to contact my ISP and see what's up.

Meh, the game is way too zoomed in, playing in 2560x1600 is a joke, the HUD is massive and clunky the units are huge and the viewable distance is tiny, really just an awful way to have to play an RTS

Production quality seems quite high though, the graphics are a bit lackluster though, the 3d cutscenes have good voiceovers and whatnot, but the low resolution textures on the armour and some other areas are a bit distracting, especially on the HUD.

Anyway first couple of missions aren't enough to really say anything about, I'll wait until i've seen some more before I comment on that.

I agree, I'd prefer to be able to see more of what's going on at once, but I've seen it said that it's intentional, so that players with really powerful PCs and massive eyefinity setups can't pwn normal humans because they can see more of the map at once.

Not sure why that limitation would be there in singleplayer though, unless they thought it might be too easy for MPers to hax0r.

MS did the same thing with AOE

I sure a zoom hack will come out for single player soon enough. It's annoying to be stuck at the default zoom level. However, with how crappy this game seems to perform, zooming out further might actually hurt performance pretty severly (If I zoom all the way in, it almost doubles my FPS)

The hud on the other hand doesn't really bother me too much, but it would of been nice for them to include a minimal skin for people that prefer the 'less is more' approach

I've been having a blast with the game since it came out. I haven't mustered up the courage to try any 'real' ladder matches yet, but I will sometime soon. I've been too busy playing the campaign to care though :-P

i agree with the default zoom level being too close. i catch myself pulling back on the mouse wheel trying to zoom out, sometimes.

I'm like 4-5 missions in and still relearning how to use the new interface. love being able to select multiple buildings! i think the campaign so far is fantastic. bringing in old units, the upgrade system being out of game, makes it really nice to not have to re-tech stimpacks in every level. and the upgrade system from zerg/protoss is ingenious. i'm loving this game and already thinking about the next two races

I dont know how much it can hurt performance. Im getting 300fps with everything maxed.

I totally owned in the tutorial.
:D, that was funny.
My wife pre ordered the game for me on our anniversary and I got it yesterday. I played the tutorial and owned it as well. lol
I also played the first 2 missions, man brings out good old memories of the first game.
Good times indeed. I can't wait for the Protoss campaign.

Probably wait till I can get this at a bargain.
I think this might be a while till it goes to bargain.

really? what the f*ck!!!

seriously, I'm getting a very inconsistant 10-40 fps in game and close to 50 (but often dipping into the low teens) in menus

SLI has got to be screwing with it... either that or my CPU is just bottle necking the shit out of me. Crysis and Metro give me a smoother game play experience (and that's saying something). So annoying :(

20 missions in (1 mission left @ the star map), best one so far is...the 20th one

This might give you an idea of how anoying the zoom is on a large monitor:

I'm not sure why it's zoomed in so close for you. At 1920x1200, it seems to be less of a problem, though I'll try comparing it tonight. Maybe someone could confirm the difference (or similarity).
