This incessant teasing by Dell is startin' to get on my freakin' nerves... anyone else? We still have no clue what the pricing on this mofo is going to be either, but ... crap, a few more days I suppose.

Not that I can get it unless I end up dumping this iPhone 4 which I'll probably do as I don't even use it as a phone; I've taken to just thinking of it as the iPod touch 4 that'll never actually be. ;)

yeah- dell should just get on with it. In the UK it's 479 so I'd assume around 500USD here. Worth it? Meh- but I'd guess that's the price point.

I've heard $499 unlocked, that's why I haven't bought one yet. o2's giving them away free with a 2 year contract, but I'd rather be contractless.

Sold my iphone, sold my ipad, and I'm waiting... waiting... waiting. It was listed as late July on their site until a few days ago, then changed to "soon". How hard can it be to release an already released product? ARG

Doesn't this piece of junk run 1.6? I was looking at it too, and I was annoyed that 1. it had a proprietary connector, and 2. it was running some terrible version of android.

5 Inch screen > 4.3 Inch screen.

But at the same resolution as the Evo, Incredible, Nexus One, and Galaxy S and lower resolution than the Droid, Droid X, and iPhone 4.

Snapdragon, 512MB RAM and ROM, 5MP camera...weak nuts. This thing might have been a contender if it was released a year ago.

Lol, Im pretty sure their tweaking it a bit before releasing it to us :D

It was, It should be running 2.1 now, but im not sure.

The extra 0.6 inch screen really matters to me, but this delay.. if the Droid X was available for GSM, I'd have ordered it by now.

It really is a damned shame that so many brand new devices just coming to market soon if they haven't already, the Dell Streak being one of them if not the most anticipated one, aren't hitting with Android 2.x already installed. That just seems so incredibly stupid to me, it really does. It's not like they haven't been able to acquire 2.x for a long damned time now and do testing with it... I mean really, what the hell is going on with some of these companies.

I'll never understand it I suppose.

Surefire way to get screwed on the market: create a killer device but cripple it with some old ass version of the OS which lacks all the stuff people want right now and they're going to go get a device that offers those capabilities right now and not with some damned future update "to be announced..."

UGH. Archos? Dell? Are you folks paying attention?

Do you know how incredibly stupid you will look holding that thing to your ear and talking on it? I wouldn't be caught dead using it for voice in public...

Here's a video of a guy trying to stick the phone in his pocket and as you can imagine he's having a very hard time:

Sure the concept of a 5inch phone is awesome but it isn't practical right now. Cell phone tech hasn't advanced yet to give us a "whole" touchscreen based phone. One where there is none or very little black area.

Imagine owning a phone the size of the iphone4 but the entire thing is one uniform piece eliminating all the black areas.

I, and several other people, own a bluetooth headset and a hands free bluetooth connection in my truck. Holding it to my ear won't be a problem. What would be a problem would be moving down to a 4" or smaller screen - for MY purposes.

So, while I appreciate your concern for the appearance of potential Streak owners, you can rest assured that many of us will be just fine. ;)

I'm going to seriously ridicule the first person I see carrying one of these as a phone.

Considering how tough that Gorilla Glass is, don't be surprised if said person smashes it upside your skull for it, too, and then records your reaction on the Streak for posting to YouTube or whatever as well just to add insult to your injury... :D

Well it's official: the Dell Streak will go on sale this Friday finally:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/10/dell-streak-on-sale-august-13-for-300-on-atandt-contract-550-wi/

Downside is that insane price: $299.99 on contract, $549.99 without one. Oh well, guess I'll keep an eye on craigslist and figure about 6 months from now I'll manage to get one at a decent price. :p

Damned shame, really. It just became a seriously small niche product even more so than it already is/was... crap.

Android 1.6 with an incredibly ugly and butchered UI? I'll pass, thanks.

5 Inch screen > 4.3 Inch screen.
I prefer a solid .8" screen myself.

I know you're being facetious, but Gorilla Glass really isn't that tough. And I don't mean, "Not tough enough to bash someone's head." I mean, "Not really much tougher than any other smartphone screen." It's still rather brittle.

Sure doesn't look brittle to me... I don't think any other smartphone on the market today could withstand that kind of beating. I had hoped someone would do this with the iPhone 4 just to test out Apple's claims of the "custom created glass" but, when they stated it's just 30x stronger than plastic, that means absolutely nothing... who the hell compares glass to plastic, anyway. :)

Just ordered mine, we'll see how long it takes to get here. Came to $543 with EPP discount, BT headset and car kit (plan to use it for some Navi).

I take it by that price you got the unlocked one? Just got the email myself and I'm tempted but, I just can't afford to get locked into a new contract at this point, my current provider is just fine and I didn't actually want the damned thing as a phone.

Sometimes I just wish PDAs were still available with all the latest and greatest and not forcing me into buying a damned phone with a contract since I can't afford one without it... :(

Yeah, I ordered it unlocked, planning on using it on O2. Didn't want to pay to get out of my 3GS contract and get it from O2 on another 2 year plan. My 3GS is carrier unlocked, so I'll either sell it or give it to my wife.

If you're willing, post a review or some opinions when you get it will ya? Would like to know what you think of it...

Yeah, I'll post up a mini review when I get it. I've used one before, buddy had one on loan from Dell and also in the O2 store. Definitely need to use it in landscape mode for most things, hopefully Froyo will change that.

Id be interested in a review from and actual use perspective.

The streak is going to flop when it comes out, very few people will want a phone that big. The Evo is pushing the size boundries. I wish my Vibrant had a 4.3" screen but at no point do I ever want anything bigger than that.

Except screen size is a shitty way to measure the size of the phone, since things like the iPhone have a massive bezel around it. Evo really just shrunk that bezel, it's physical dimensions aren't all that much bigger than most. The Evo is 4.8" by 2.6", the iPhone 4 is 4.5" by 2.3"

Doesn't change the fact that the streak is fucking huge. It's a joke as a phone.

Depends on what you use your phone for. I have 30 min of talk time on my 3GS since June of 2009, I'm more concerned with email, web access and Nav then I am with holding the thing up to my ear.

A bigger concern is depth.

The iphone 4 is only .37" deep and weighs only 4.8oz

The evo is .5" deep and weighs 6oz.

That's a bit too thick of a phone for me.

I could care less about the size except that I want a big decent device, just not a damned phone... ;)

But anyway, what Dell has apparently done with this stupid "unlocked but not unlocked" bullshit has basically just canned the Streak before it's even out on Friday, what a total fuck-up this is going to turn out to be for 'em.

Oh well... my Axim X51v just remains my most used device going on 6 years now, and no signs of being replaced... :p

Little bit of depth isn't a bad thing. I like the way my Droid feels in my hand (also .5" deep). Too thin makes it awkward for me to hold it. Likewise, weight isn't really a concern for me. As long as it isn't too heavy that it gets tiring to hold (which the 6oz Droid isn't for me), then I don't care. Too light can also feel cheap. After all, people hold the iPad in one hand, and that fat ass is 1.5 lbs - which IMO is too heavy, and the rounded back makes holding it a horrible experience.

No one has any illusion about being able to slide an iPad in their pocket, though. For me, a phone that doesn't slide gracefully into my pocket without fuss is just a bad phone (an iPhone with a bumper on it, for example, is a bad phone) :)
