Who else is getting the Droid X?

Posting from one now. Swype is killer, and voice to text is generally very accurate. Scrolling doesn't feel as smooth as an iphone, but the phone is very responsive. This is my first smartphone, I can't believe I held out this long. Very satisfied

My buddy at work picked his up at lunch...I have to say the one place it spanks HTC is build quality. It feels really good and has a nice weight. The OS seemed responsive enough and yes it has some bugs and the phone's boot loader is locked down like fort knox, but hey, a lot of phone users could give a crap as long as updates come and there are no major issues.

I've decided not to bother trying to change from the Incredible because it's more screen real estate than I really need and performance is similar. When it comes to gaming I know there is a big boost for the Droid, but I could care less about that. Gonna chill and wait for dual core Cortex A9 based phones at the end of this year/ beginning of next year..

Well I carry two phones, one simple (for quick jaunts ) that is micro and fits in my pocket then a second smart phone. Not everyone has that luxury and if it were just one phone, I would choose the incredible becuase its the perfect size. I am in the business and feel it is important to really get a feel for each phone to better servce my customers and in the case of the Droid X, its a real pleasure. It will also be replaced by the next latest and greatest.

Motorola has already confirmed that this device isn't running said "Motoblur". It's a widget system that shares characteristics but is a whole new entity.

And I do question just about anything Giz reports or reviews.

I concurr, The moto devour was so "in you face" with moto blurr that I wanted to toss it out the windwo. THe X is not using it. The "skin" and fonts resemble it but that is where it ends. It is a pretty good program but I prefer facebook mobile. Simple and to the point . No need for an aggregate program since I only have the one social network site , and one ( linked in) prof network site.

You're holding it wrong.

I went to Verizon today and did a comparison to see if I wanted to exchange my Incredible for the X. I took some pictures of the two to compare and the pictures don't do it justice. The X just feels like it overwhelms the Incredible in sheer size. It's one of those phones where if you managed to get it in your pocket you would never be able to get it out if you were driving and had to answer a call. It was just way too big for me and the OS still has some kinks that need to be worked out. It was noticeably clunkier than the Incredible and less responsive.

The clunkiness could probably be fixed in an update (or by the ROM community, if Motorola didn't have its head up its ass) because the processor in the X, I believe, is definitely faster than the Incredible's snapdragon.

Anyone have any word on when the Samsung Galaxy S phone is coming to Verizon?

Yeah, my love for the Droid X is quickly ..... going away.

The UI is very very sluggish.

I mean VERY sluggish. Doesn't seem to make a difference what Live Wallpapers I use. This thing is taking a huge 3D hit somewhere, because of sloppy code, weak GPU, buggy software? I don't know.

Battery Life is such that, if you play with this thing for an a few hours or less, you can kill the battery. I know, I did this twice today.

I guess you can't really use this thing? Just for quick calls and ... a few dozen text messages and maybe 30 mins of music, 30 mins surfing the web? But my battery is just draining super fast. from 50% to 20% in under 30 mins. Anyone else? I have a lot of the processes killed but some come back right away depending on the app you open. My LCD brightness is set to default ( automatic ) so no, I don't have brightness up.

I am going to pay close attention over the next few days. But at this point, I'm not going to keep it. Using that choppy UI is just ruining the experience for me.

The Iphone might have it's issues, small screen size, but my 2 year old ipod touch is silky smooth.

Even with just text, I'm getting those split second screen locks where things just for a fraction of an instant, stop. then start again, so if you were drag your finger down and expect the list to just smoothly scroll down, no, that won't happen. You will get a nice 2 second scroll into a micro-stutters.

Droid X seems very under powered navigating the UI.

People who've had the phone for about a week already say that the UI and battery get better over time. If your phone doesn't get better, contact Verizon about a replacement.
I was at the Verizon store today and they had two Droid X's side by side. The one on the left was very smooth and responsive; the one on the right was a little jerky and slow.

Also, try searching for a system update.

I'm glad you shared that with me. I've not heard that.

I am honestly not some perfectionist where I need to have things perfect or I throw a hardware fit.

I really want to keep my Droid X.

I am trying to figure out what of the choppiness statements are about. My phone is as smooth as butter. I am not using live wallpapers perhaps that's the reason?

Some sage advice for those who haven't to make things smoother:

-Use an alternate UI. I use ADW launcher and it's more lightweight and smoother than the stock motoblur UI.

-Appkiller is key. You can tag apps that can be killed without consequence and then every time you touch the widget on a home screen, it will kill those apps to free up memory. You can even program one to do this for you, but that gets tricky.

Confirms everything Gizmodo said then.

And BTW alot of phones (including the Galaxy S) take about 5 charge/discharge cycles before their battery life matures.

Do you belong to a particular Android community? I'd suggest scouring for suggested apps that will benefit your use of the X, like the previously suggested 3rd party app launcher and app killer programs.

I too have heard that for whatever strange reason, the phone seems to perform better as you gradually use it.

And again, worst case scenario, you can always return the device up to 30 days since activation. Note however, that they may charge you a restocking fee and/or pro-rate your usage.

I would like to keep this phone. I am in no rush to panic and dump the phone, that much I can say.

I love the phone, I do. But when the UI is sluggish it really makes my experience bitter sweet.

That buttery silky UI performance is key. I honestly hate switching between screens cause I'm reminded of the problems when I see those screens just get all herky jerky on me.

The one screen with all the icons? Yeah, I dare don't go there, that experience is the worst, talk about dropped frames on a phone.

I shouldn't have to .. NOT use a Live Wallpaper cause the performance is lousy. That's lame. Also, I shouldn't have to use a 3rd party UI app either, tho I appreciate the help.
I also shouldn't have to kill processes in order to raise the UI / Phone performance.

How in the hell was this phone even released in this state?

Just played around with a friend's phone and it seemed large and clunky. Maybe it will get more familiar and seem less so but I am thinking about waiting for the Galaxy now.

Honestly, this phone just shouldn't perform this bad. It's going back. They had every chance in the world before this thing was released to get this thing perfect. For me to get this new phone in this state is just really bad. I've learned my lessons long ago. Don't wait around for something like this to get fixed, it almost never does anytime soon, if at all.

For the guys complaining about the UI being sluggish:

PLEASE give launcher pro a try. It's a free home screen replacement that has a horizontal scrolling dock at the bottom. It's VERY smooth. It will also let you use the motoblur widgets if you found any of them useful.

The stock motoblur UI on the X is nothing but an incoherent showcase of widgets.

The hardware on this phone is great. The remarkable thing about Android is that you actually have CHOICES to replace bits of software that you feel are buggy or don't perform well, so take advantage of it.

I am looking to get one for my wife and one for myself as soon as I get back stateside. I can't wait to get rid of AT&T.

So I just got my phone. I will agree, that all the widgets and screens upon initial bootup are a bit overwhelming, but just like everything else you purchase new for the first time, you get use to it eventually. But as others have suggested, as soon as I installed LauncherPro, the phone has not only become more responsive and extremely fast, but it's far easier to navigate!

I'm not sure why all the complaints about its speed, but I'm coming from a Storm 1, and I can tell you right now, I have no idea how I survived with that device as long as I did now that I have harvested the power that is Android!

why not try out the incredible ? or go to sprint for an EVO ?

Well after all my pro-Droid X banter leading up to its release, I must say I am disappointed. I found the device clunky. I found the UI sluggish and I wasn't impressed with the build quality. Top it off with an encrypted rom and all I can say is WTF!

I wound up visiting Verizon, T-Mobile & AT&T last night. They are all within 100' of each other. I hit VZW first and came to the conclusion above, which really bummed me out.

Second stop was T-Mo. I asked if they had the Vibrant. The CSR said they could not display it until the 24th of July. I was on my way out the door when he said "I have one here. Would you like try it out"? He then handed me a Vibrant from behind the counter. All I can say is WOW! Gorgeous phone, gorgeous screen.

The Super AMOLED screen crushes the X screen. Not even in the same ball park. The UI was very responsive and the build quality was good. Not sure how it would handle being dropped, but that's another story.

The Vibrant resembles an iPhone 3G. The Vibrant comes with the Avatar movie pre-loaded. The movie looked incredible on this screen. The camera was responsive but does not come with a flash. I can't for the life of me understand why Samsung wouldn't include an LED flash. Overall though, I was very impressed.

My last stop was AT&T to have a look at the iPhone 4. The screen is also gorgeous, but it does look small. The UI is responsive & smooth, but seems dated at this point. Navigating the phone left me bored. The build quality on the iPhone is by far the best of the 3. The device feels very solid.

I know I only spent 10-15 minutes with each phone, but I think at this point I will wait for the Verizon Fascinate (shitty name) to be released. Samsung has really stepped up their game with the Galaaxy S series.

She does run hotter than incredible
I always felt the original DROID to run a bit hot, but the Incredible never bothered me. Did you feel the Incredible to be hot? (not including GPS of course, just browsing, etc) :D

It will also be replaced by the next latest and greatest.
The Fascinate!! :p

I am honestly not some perfectionist where I need to have things perfect or I throw a hardware fit.
This, unfortunately, is me. I haven't even gone to the VZW to see this thing. Too many complaints and lackluster reviews.

I am thinking about waiting for the Galaxy now.
Same.

Good to hear. One thing that always bugged me about the original DROID was the touch sensor. It couldn't compete w/ the iPhone and always felt jerky or off. When the Incredible came out, I was blown away w/ how accurate and responsive it's touch sensor was. I would even say it bests the iPhone 3GS. So I'm hoping for something similar on the Fascinate. Does anyone know the screen aspect? Is it nice and wide like the EVO or retard narrow like the DROID, making portrait reading a frustrating experience?

Please let this phone have a loud and clear ear speaker and speakerphone, great camera, cool running internals, long battery life, fantastic signal reception, and have the ability to grant superpowers.

Just an update, I got it working and it's gone from a POS to extremely smooth. It's a night and day difference.

God have I been pissed.

Why ... why would Verizon and Motorola ship the Droid X with that horrible performing UI?

After some research and advice I tried out Launcher Pro along with Beautiful Widgets and .... WOW ... pretty awesome

Foot in my mouth? That really doesn't fit the situation.

The Droid X ships with a U.I. that frankly has caused the phone a lot of unwanted attention.

When I called Verizon in Topeka this afternoon, I was told that there has been a lot of complaints in-store and over the phone about the U.I. I was told to change my U.I. to Launcher Pro and that it would fix my issues. That's how I heard about Launcher Pro, thru Verizon, kinda funny.

I just loaded that launcher pro and its amazing...thanks for the tip to whoever suggested it. Does anyone know how much resources it uses compared to the base moto UI?

I can't belive that this thing is a "beta"

Does anyone know if the moto ui still runs in the background while this is on?

I don't believe it's a major resource hog.

It should be noted, that people are reporting that if you download a 3rd party launcher and attempt to remove it to return to the original UI, your screen will be blank. The only way to return to the stock UI is to do a factory reset.

Yea....I don't see that happening in the near future. However, I am curious as to what will happen when the froyo update comes. Does the phone get reflashed and back to stock with no apps and base ui?

the phone software was probably rushed because they knew the phone would have 2.2 real soon

You mean like how quickly the original Droid got 2.1? Am I seriously the only one that remembers "oh, it'll be any day now...no, wait, woops, it'll be next month...it'll be any day now...no, wait, stay tuned, we'll get it to you eventually..."

Knowing Motorola, honestly, you'll be lucky to see 2.2 before October.

They're working closely with Google so I think they'll make the August date. Andy Rubin was at the Droid X event.

No incredible never got hot except when i was looking for wifi when there was none
none. The screen real estate is so much better i'm in heaven. My old eyes appreciate it

We agree!? :D

I haven't picked this up yet, because we both know I'll wind up bitching and moaning until I eventually return it. Could you compare the 2 a little more? For example, is taking a photo as easy on the X? What about the awesome touch sensor of the Incredible, does the X follow in its fingerprints? Is the ringer loud? Does it get hotter than the original DROID?

Thanks buddy!

For example, is taking a photo as easy on the X
Depends on what you prefer: a dedicated camera button (Droid X) or tapping on the screen (Incredible).

From what I've seen, the touch sensor is as good if not better than the Incredible. When I had the Inc, I did some touch sensor tests and straight lines got a little wobbly at certain areas of the screen.

However, in this YouTube video, the lines are totally straight like the iPhone.

Some people say it's loud, some say it's quiet. I guess it's relative to what phone you used previously.

I don't know.

You can actually use the optical sensor button on the Incredible if you want to take a picture by pressing that. It's not technically dedicated, but it's a physical button none the less.

My question wasn't referring to a button, but the overall speed and ease of focus. The Incredible was the first phone I could actually snap a quick pic of something that would only be there momentarily. If anyone remembers the DROID before the camera fix, there were lots of focus issues. And some phones have tons of shutter lag. I just meant...

1. Is it quick?
2. Does it focus easily?

It is much cooler than the original droid. Touch screen is nearly as responsive but not quite. . I like the virtual keyboard better. Froyo will make this device shine. Voice to text is more accurate than incredible
