Who else is getting the Droid X?

Huh? How's that gunna happen apart from Moto cooperation?
Highly doubtful anyone's going to want to put forth effort to crack encryption on an electronic device that'll be outdated in 6 months.

What? I thought it was fairly clear. By "copy" I meant a similar device. Similar specs, screen size, etc... that good for you? I don't know know what agreements are in place concerning hardware but it can't really be that tight.

Oh you mean another MANUFACTURER release a Droid X-like device? If that's what you meant, I understand now :p

There's always the Galaxy S...

Anyone know what time the phone goes on sell? Is it midnight in each time zone, or east or west coast time for everyone? Wirefly has it going on sell at 2am my time instead of midnight..

probably not because you can't use custom roms as the bootloader will corrupt if you not using the factory rom automatically

nevermind, I lied

It's up on the east coast @ 1:13 AM on Verizon's website

No custom ROMs = no deal.

I rooted my Droid and installed custom ROMs on it back in the beginning of the year because I was sick of waiting for 2.1 from Verizon + Motorola.

I'm not putting myself through that again.

I wonder what bad-ass new Android phone will be out in November/December. :)

I would if I wasn't working in Canada. Can't use a foreign ESN on the two CDMA providers up here. It'll be six months or more before a NAM GSM version comes out (if it comes out at all).

Think about how you used the Blackberry. Screen was probably off 95% of the time, you didn't surf much because it was painful and slow, you didn't run many apps because there weren't many worth running, etc. You basically talked, texted and emailed on it, and maybe used it for an MP3 player.

Going from a Bold 9000 to a Milestone (GSM Droid), I had a bit of battery shock too, but once I got over the new and shiny and screen never off for long phase, I was able to get a full and productive day out of the phone. It's even better now that I'm able to under-volt it. I'm also careful to use WiFi instead of the 3g radio whenever possible, keep GPS turned off it I don't need it, reduce the update frequency on shit like Facebook or Twitter, and make sure all my non-Exchange email is coming in through Gmail, so it's battery-saving push instead of battery-eating pull.

The Droid X should be even better, it's a more efficient 45nm vs 65nm CPU, with the same GPU and the same amount of pixels to push (though with a bigger backlight). All with a larger battery and better battery management software. Clock speed should be a non-issue, since it's dynamic anyway, clocking down to 250mhz at idle, and only bursts up to full speed for short periods of time, which has always proven to be more energy efficient than slow-but-steady fixed speed computing.

All that said, a good Android device begs to be used more than a feature-phone or email appliance like the BB, and will eat through battery faster as a consequence. Price you pay for all that functionality.
Sensible advice Croak and I'll definitely consider your pointers when I pull the trigger on my next gadget. I'm still using a (gasp) Razr but am strongly leaning towards a Droid when they become available in my area (and my contract is up). All is not well in "Appledise" and I don't like their bullying lockdown tactics and deceptive marketing, especially the turd-polishing Mac commercials. No deathgrip iPhone for me! Droid Droid Droid ...

Damn, it's $199 online, why the hell is my local supplier charging 3 hun with a 99 rebate? Fuckers.

Well, got my Droid X, left home around 4am, got to destination an hour later. Hate to call an ex girlfriend to meet me for breakfast. Killed a few hours with her then had to wait 90 mins in line with about 15 others.

They gave me instant rebate and $50 dollars off phone. I think they did this for everyone waiting in line.

Was able to get phone, car charger, media dock, clear plastic case and screen protectors for about $238 with tax.

Loving it.

Gizmodo absolutely TRASHED this phone...

Can anyone with it in-hand confirm or deny some of these opinions? It's depressing me...

http://gizmodo.com/5587225/motorola-droid-x-review

Gizmodo still masturbates to pictures of the Apple logo despite the iPhone 4 prototype deal. I wouldn't expect an objective review of any Android phone from them.

On the flip side, the Droid X does deserve to be trashed solely because of Motorola's head-up-ass lockdown tactics.

That's all stuff that could easily be resolved with a custom ROM, but... That ain't happening.

I see no reason to not believe it though, as soon as we found out about the encrypted ROM thing, you know Moto screwed the pooch from the get go.

Do you expect anything less from a typical Apple-Fanboy site? Seriously, I use to love Gizmodo, but they lost their way awhile ago, particularly after the whole "we purchased an iPhone 4 Prototype" fiasco a few months back.

Giz is no longer a trusted site on all things tech for me.

With as much as Motorola has locked this device down I am seriously reconsidering.

They are using an eFuse chip to brick the phone if you try to tamper with it. This combined with RSA2048 used on the bootloader is going to make this uncrackable. People are not even sure it will be rootable at this point.

http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/droid-x-discussion/3330-how-droid-x-locked-down-let-me-tell-you-what-i-know.html

eFuse is not a big deal, nor is it a new development. It has been on the droid 1 and milestone (which have been hacked on to no end) and it was never triggered.

How about a droid army app that tries to crack the bootloader in a distributed fashion, like fold@home. If we have thousands of droids trying to break the encryption every night, maybe we'll get a hit.

Me, either, but you really question all the crap loaded on it? They even provide screenshots.

You'd also have to say they outright lied that the hotspot dropped connected devices without warning.

And MotoBlurr quite frankly sucks, especially when compared to the alternatives.

It's really all stuff that wouldn't matter if you could custom ROM it.

Gizmodo is now saying that Motorola is looking into the eFuse "issue."

Sounds like they didn't intend for it to brick the phone?

They might look into that "issue" however the fact remains the bootrom is still encrypted.

I sure as hell hope that's right and that the encrypted bootloader can be circumvented. I ordered two of these this morning (me and wife). I had compared all of the specs on them more than a week ago and decided that they were what we wanted, without seeing anything about the efuse/bootloader issues. If I would have known about those issues, I would have gotten something else instead. Fail on me for not researching enough, but more fail on Moto for defeating the purpose of open source software.

Seems like the eFuse implementation could easily result in bricked phones if something goes wrong with the official updating process as well. Imagine the backlash if Motorola releases a buggy update OTA that bricks a lot of people's phones...

I don't think Motorola is implementing the eFuse in any way as it pertains to the bootloader. The droid X isn't the first phone with this feature.

@ Everyone that picked it up today. Impressions? I'm seriously considering getting the Droid X and was wondering what people thought. Also, how does it feel in pocket? Having a slightly larger profile and all.

I just got mine i'm using voice to text as we speak. I like this phone even better than my incredible.
The virtual keyboard is the best i've ever used. I'm in love the screen is amazing. The camera seems to be superior to the incredibles as well. She does run hotter than incredible

You may want to look up RSA2048 encryption. Experts say it is virtually uncrackable with current levels of computational power.

I played with the phone today and I'm happy I didn't trade it in for the Incredible. The entire OS is very clunky and is not smooth at all. Compared to INC the touch/feel and general webrowsing experience is subpar. The display looks a little better but thats because it's larger. The camera has the same problems that the INC does, it drops frames left and write. The best camera on the market really is Apple's right now.

I also brought the phone to face to see how I'd look talking on the phone and I looked fucking stupid. The phone ist just to goddamn long and wide.

You'll be hoping until you die, then.

You can always return it. I'm sure Verizon has a 30 day return policy or something, too.

Agree 100% as usual. Been "hoping" for the milestone's bootloader to be cracked for months (Just because mostly, The telus rom is actually fairly good aside from a little spat of random rebooting once in a while. ) for some 2.2 action a little early.

And what this?! No news. :(

That's probably what it will come down to. Realistically, the only reason that I want a custom ROM/root access is for free wifi tethering. If I can have that with Froyo, I'll be plenty happy, but I'm guessing VZW is going to make us pay the $20/mo fee even if Froyo natively supports it.

Exactly true...

That said some devices (like ATT's Aria) they've tampered with the kernel and wifi tethering for free has been hard for the community. So no guarantees there.

The kernel needs tampering to enable it on just about any phone, which is why wifi tethering doesn't work on my milestone.

And while I normally hate wifi tethering (Talk about a battery murderer. Kill isn't a strong enough word for what it does to a battery.. ) it would be nice while I'm at my cottage.

Yea, it's a battery killer. But plugging it in while using it is still a huge advantage (especially if you're sharing multiple devices).

My buddy at work picked his up at lunch...I have to say the one place it spanks HTC is build quality. It feels really good and has a nice weight. The OS seemed responsive enough and yes it has some bugs and the phone's boot loader is locked down like fort knox, but hey, a lot of phone users could give a crap as long as updates come and there are no major issues.

I've decided not to bother trying to change from the Incredible because it's more screen real estate than I really need and performance is similar. When it comes to gaming I know there is a big boost for the Droid, but I could care less about that. Gonna chill and wait for dual core Cortex A9 based phones at the end of this year/ beginning of next year..

Me, either, but you really question all the crap loaded on it?
And MotoBlur quite frankly sucks, especially when compared to the alternatives.

Motorola has already confirmed that this device isn't running said "Motoblur". It's a widget system that shares characteristics but is a whole new entity.

And I do question just about anything Giz reports or reviews.
