Politicians Push for New Internet Sales Taxes

Once again lawmakers are zeroing in on collecting sales tax from internet sales. This has been an ongoing issue for many years and has successfully been defeated each time it was proposed. Internet sales are really big business, mainly because there of low overhead and no sales tax.. Goose? Golden Egg?

This is hardly a new debate: pro-tax officials and state governments have been pressing Congress to require taxes to be collected for a decade or so. They argue that reduced sales tax revenue threatens budgets for schools and police, and say that, as a matter of fairness, online retailers should be forced to collect the same taxes that brick-and-mortar retailers do. But with states scrambling for new sources of revenue during what may be a double-dip recession, pro-tax lobbyists are hoping that they'll have better luck this year. The National Conference of State Legislatures applauded Delahunt's legislation, saying he should be commended for allowing states to collect as much as $23 billion in new taxes.

um yeah california collects internet sales taxes.. doesnt look like its helped at all.. lol schools are still suffering and police officers are quitting or being layed off left and right in northern and southern california..

interesting, though it will kill off some interest in online sales....not sure if it would be successful......maybe spending should be cut back and then they wont have to worry about it!

If government stopped spending so much...Maybe that would help.

I agree, the only thing taxing internet sales will do is cause them to spend more, offsetting any extra money they would have gotten.

Imagine how many people would skip out on federal/state taxes if they didn't have the looming specter of the audit hanging over head... I mean plenty of people with the whole "If they'd just stop spending as much..." attitude that this country would go broke even faster

That's true, many people *would* skip out on taxes if there weren't a chance of an audit... but that doesn't change the fact that they spend outside their means.

Figures.
A federal tax on online sales.
Do the hookers in Vegas have to add taxes to thier vaginas for the democrats in our big government too?

Vote the liberal big government out in November.

What we need more taxes in times like this. Hell try to raise taxes that way you can insure no re-election in November.

November can not get here fast enough!!!! The Jackasscrates only see working people as thier personal flock to be fleeced!!! So they can pay off the deadbeats for voting for them!!! I hope that years from now that people will remember what they really stand for!!

Uh, the economy has hurt my income, so I think I will increase my prices.
Wait, that SHIT does not work??
When will these idiots get a clue.
Less income = reduce spending,
Not the 10% budget increase they did last year.
The issue the states are having is they can't print money like the federal government.
Our government sucks. Total morons.

Stupid pols don't look at the big picture. No sales taxes are balanced out by having to pay shipping charges, potentially two ways if you return something. If you start charging taxes in addition to shipping, you hurt Internet businesses, costing jobs, not to mention hurting the shipping companies as well.

Sales tax just makes things more expensive. and with buying online there are shipping costs. The politicians should take a pay cut for themselves isntead of taxing everyone to death. congress people make 250k+ a year. Senators make $60K. I think a senator's Pay is reasonable but Congress make too much. Especially considering they are often wealthy multimillionaires before they even run for office. November cannot come soon enough. Got to throw the bums out!

I am going to whine and bitch about this for eternity. It's such a sweet deal, now, but you'd have to be a fool to think big government can pass on these sweet revenue stream for long.

IMO, they should pass this tax for federal ONLY and make it 3%. It should go EXCLUSIVELY to Social Security. Maybe even require retailers to give people an option to add 1% tax for the program of their choice, like schools (state), the space program (federal), etc.

So why don't they just stop spending as much?

I have to pay sales tax to Newegg because they have a warehouse in my state but I configured a system on Newegg and ZipZoomFly (no tax there) it's only slightly (less than $100) more expensive than Zipzoomfly (do they even have stuff in stock anymore?).

Not that I'd be a fan of online sales tax but I think that if online retailers can keep prices significantly lower than the local competition then the tax should only be a slight sting. :\

I'd rather not put any more of my money in that bucket that does not even have a bottom in it.

I live in southern Colorado and when this bill passed here I about shit. Our governer (Ritter) isn't running for reelection so he pushed for its passage. Local special interests that felt they were losing sales to internet companies were behind it. Most of the internet purchases I make can't be found locally, and the ones I can find are priced way out of line compared to most of the etailers I use. Needless to say I have cut back on my spending, both online and locally, so who really loses? I'll remember this when I vote.

Anyone honestly surprised here?

Welcome to Government Math 101 :

23 Billion in NEW taxes = 100 Billion in NEW spending.

some of the more popular etailers already reside in the state where i live. i've been paying an internet tax since forever. now maybe some of you out of state wonks will feel my pain.

And put the big government Republican party in there? I hate to break it to you but both parties are the same.

They are NOT even close. There are some RINO's (Republican in name only) that do want more govt., but the vast majority of Republicans support smaller govt and fewer taxes contrary to the vast majority of Democrats.
Research how your Congressman voted and all the others on various bills.
Just the facts ma'am. ;)

Hey, wasn't the original title "Democrats Push for New Internet Sales Taxes"?
Somebody must have found a few RINO's supporting the idea.
The bill is logically consistent with Democrat party philosophy

Co-sponsors of Delahunt's bill, the "Main Street Fairness Act," include Reps. Michael Capuano, John Conyers, Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, and Peter Welch, all Democrats. No Republican has signed on as a co-sponsor.

I was wrong. It IS a fully 100% sponsored and created Democrat bill.
WHY DID YOU CHANGE THE TITLE????

It's well established anytime taxes increase, the GDP decreases.

I've done more than enough research and used to vote Republican as well. I have rarely if ever seen the Democrats or Republicans try and cut government. Instead, they are cinstantly passing more and more laws. How about the Patriot Act where loads of Republican Congressmen voted in favor for it. There were other things passed as well.
Fact is both parties spend insane amounts of money, keep chopping up the Constitution, flip flop on issues, and cater to big business.

Quite frankly it doesn't matter that Obama is in office or if McCain was in office. Your life would not be any different.

more people need to look at the tea party. it is absolutely for smaller government. not the nuts that the news likes to make them out to be.

Yeah, it said "Democrats" and now it just says "Politicians". Maybe Dumbocrats begged [H] to change the title. :rolleyes;

Can I elect not to pay SS and medicare taxes if I agree not to rely on benefits when I retire?

God knows I'll never see those money and will not need em anyways...

I held my nose when voting for RINO McCain, but to say he's no different than Obama?

Like I said earlier. Research who voted for every one of these bailout/stimulus/healthcare bills. Result. 99% of Democrats supported. 99% Republicans against.
To say they're no different is like saying Rosie O'Donnel is no different than Laetitia Casta.

Great thinking. Let's take something that actually helps the economy and kill it by taking away one of it's major attractions - no taxes. It's a shame none of these politicians today have the slightest understanding of the holiday we're about to celebrate.

There were bailout bills and stimulus bills during Bush's time that Republicans supported and Democrats were against. Now the tables turned and the Democrats are putting out garbage stimulus bills and the Republicans are against them. With the exception of a few Congressmen, both parties are such a joke.

Ah so this part is of Obamas $787 billion economic stimulus package to tax us more in the long run.

I swear its like America doesn't want the average joe to have money saved for a rainy day. Always a new law financially being introduced that makes us the public even more broke.
