First off, let me take a moment to say that it's a pleasure to be a part of the [H] community; I'm a big hardware enthusiast and this forum is definitely the [H]ardest around.

Now to the problem at hand...

I have an extra Intel Core 2 Duo e6700 laying around which I got from a friend, and would like some input as for what to do with it. My options are as follows:

  1. After reaching 100 posts and fulfilling the other requirements for the BST forum here, put it up for sale and save up for my next build.
  2. Purchase an inexpensive LGA 775 motherboard and utilize some spare parts laying around to build a spare rig to run Folding@Home or VMWare ESXi on.

Nice and straightforward. I look forward to hearing other suggestions as well; be creative!

Thanks!

I'd sell it. It doesn't hurt to have extra money for your next build :)

If I do decide to build a new rig I need to liquidate some other stuff, including most of the current rig (listed in my sig), an lcd projector, and some other stuff... Seeing as I already have two computers that run 24/7 folding and downloading things, I probably don't need to add a third to the power bill. My Folding@home performance would skyrocket if I moved to a more aggressive main platform, so I may decide to do that.

Thanks for the feedback! Keep it coming.

Like I hinted at, I have everything but the mobo for a third rig (with this Conroe CPU), so it's still pretty-much up in the air. Leaning towards selling, though, once I meet the qualifications.

Well, thanks for the feedback everyone! I've decided to compromise between the two options.

I plan on getting a cheap LGA 775 motherboard from the BST forum here, setting up the rig, running F@H for a few weeks, then selling it to my roomate's girlfriend to play WoW on once I find a decent GPU.

sell, dont put money into a 775 system unless its a part u can carry over to a new build

There's no need to part out your rig for a new one. There's not much to upgrade to besides the expensive hexacore cpus, and possibly 6gigs of ram in your case.

This thread is actually really old, compared to my current setup. I have a 1055T 6-core rig right now as my gaming pc, a phenom x4 first-gen as my Server 2008 box, a Celeron 440 machine running untangle, and a Core 2 Quad Q8200 machine just because.

I never even realized. 6-15 registered as this month, just a couple days ago.

Oh well, best of luck.
