Who would have guessed? Apparently Apple is refusing to answer Gizmodo’s request to attend.

"When this whole thing with Gizmodo happened, I got a lot of advice from people that said you've got to just let it slide. You shouldn't go after a journalist because they bought stolen property and tried to extort you," Jobs said. "And I thought deeply about this, and I concluded the worst thing that could happen is if we change our core values and let it slide. I can't do that. I'd rather quit."

They'll have someone inside, won't be an issue.
 
What exactly is the process for the press to get into these shows? Do they request to get in for free? If they buy a ticket like everyone else, how would Apple know who is buying a ticket on behalf of Gizmodo?

Interesting article. I don't blame apple for banning Gizmodo. On the other hand, that website, Ripten, has a banner that says "Everything is permitted." That's a pretty broad charter. 'Everything' would include the very activity they're taking a stand against.
 
You got to admit that everything you do comes back to haunt you at some point. IF they had been smart, which is a bit of stretch for them, they should have given it back to apple and used the good will to get insider info in the future. Though I would not put it past them to have stolen it in the first place. Maybe to get an exclusive that apple planned on being a center point of the show.
 
I thought the story was that they tried to give it back. They just wanted Apple to say "yes it's ours, now give it back..." and Apple didn't take them up on the offer.

Well, I think we can discern that really was an Apple product.

That would have required considering tomorrow. It's entirely evident they were entirely focused on today.

Like you said, imagine if Gizmodo had just asked to be reimbursed for the bribe money they paid the thief and for a future exclusive. They wouldn't have forever soured their relationship with Apple. For a tech journalist (that's really pushing it for Giz. staff) having Jobs "owe you one" is a prize that couldn't be bought with money.

What's that saying... something about retrospect is always 20/20?

Steve Jobs personally talked to Gizmodo and asked for the phone back. Gizmodo said no, not like this, we want something in writing. Gizmodo got the request in writing and then went ahead and put the phone pics and specs along with the letter on their site for the world to see. Not going to make many friends doing that.
 
The info about the iPhone prototype - meaning everything Gizmodo had on it, all the pics, etc etc - was posted before Steve Jobs contacted them asking for it back based on all the reports I've seen.

That's what the stink is all about:

- Guy loses iPhone
- Someone finds it, makes a minor effort to locate said Guy
- Fails, keeps the phone, doesn't take the SIM out so Apple sends out the "Magic Bullet" and disables it
- Holds on to it for a few days or so
- Starts baiting it around to tech sites hoping someone bites
- Gizmodo bites and buys it
- Gizmodo does their little article on it but doesn't publish it just yet hoping to build up exposure
- Apple refuses to acknowledge it's a real prototype or their product at all and basically ignores the building hype
- Gizmodo publishes the article
- Apple makes a request but unofficial one i.e. a simple phone call (not the Steve Jobs call)
- Gizmodo says "Ok, first you said it wasn't real, then you say it is, can we get something official that states it's yours instead of someone just telling us yeah yeah it's ours, it's a big joke, give it back"
- Apple doesn't respond as Gizmodo hoped, doesn't send anything official at all, no letterhead, nothing that Gizmodo can then use as "proof" that it's the real deal
- Steve Jobs puts in a call himself and asks for the phone prototype to be returned
- Gizmodo returns the phone within 24 hours of that call
- All fucking hell breaks loose
- Time goes by, reporter gets his door bashed in, possessions confiscated, etc etc
- Media hypes it even worse, The Daily Show does their "Appholes" routine, etc etc
- Still being talked about to this day
- Steve Jobs basically said last week at D8 (not an exact quote of course) that he wasn't going to be called a pussy over this and plans to pursue it to the fullest extent possible

Now this with WWDC which as stated is no surprise. They're both being stupid about this, both Gizmodo and Apple, that's my opinion.
 
Haha take that gizmodo. Funny that such a hardcore apple fanboy site is on the backhand side of Apple now.
 
It's time for this story to just die. Honestly, who believes ANYTHING being said by ANYONE related to this incident anymore?

will agree with this except for this point, Apple was by far dumber here. They should have claimed it at the first chance and not been so utterly stupid to try and ignore it. then to send the cops in on Journalist (and yes they are Journalist not bloggers) because of a "theft" is just plain stupid on there part. they needed stop wearing their feelings on their sleeves and said thank you when they got the phone back. dealing with the press on something like this is just a loosing battle. Jobs has a stiff neck and it cost them more then it should have here.

don't take me wrong, Gizmodo didn't take the high road here ether.

and for anyone that thinks this should be dropped, no way in hell. not until some heads roll. they need that judge out of office and the DA canned IMO. They never could have done this to a newspaper so why is it ok now?

They publish as their occupation I suppose; but your right the difference here is blurry. And to be honest posting is free speech as well. Any corporation \ government \ any entity using the legal system to retaliate against press / news / US citizen is really a direct violation our right to free speech. They had the phone back. it was never stolen. Apple and esp the DA / LE involved deserve to canned. and that judge needs to retire.
 
I'm with the minority here that thinks Giz could have handled it better, but Apple has been everything from childish to bullying. And I can not believe the search warrant went through after the documented return of the phone. What were they (Apple) trying to do, get the article off the 'net?
Oh well, Jobs got away with hiding his medical condition (Major SEC violation for a CEO, I believe), so at this point its just going to be more and more until they cross a line some law enforcement will not tolerate, then it is off to... (probably a light hand slapping)

What the hell is apple thinking? If I was looking for an Iphone, it wouldn't make a difference if Giz posted an article or not, if anything it would get me more pumped about the device.
 
Well there is a saying that sometimes the two choices (Gizmodo and Apple) are both "evil", and you have to "pick the lesser evil", which, right now is Gizmodo.
 
Jobs should be a woman. Never seen a man act so bitchy in all my life. How did Gizmodo "extort" anything from Jobs? Oh, was it because they tried to make him admit the property he was asking for was actually his? Did they, or did they not, return the phone to Jobs?

Technically, doesn't Steve Jobs only make $1 per year? Granted, the dude obviously doesn't lack money in any way due to stock options and whatnot, but the actually paychecks the guy gets aren't exactly what you'd call fat lol.

not if apple is sitting on a few million current gen iphones. ideally you want to sell all the old ones off for as much as you can. if the apple fanbois get wind that a new version is around the corner then they are more likely to sit on their money and wait for the current gen. the old phones then have to have a price drop to get rid of the inventory. people don't want to upgrade to old tech. so in a way yeah its screwed apple a little here in that they may loose the chance to sell the old tech for new pricing. in other words it will make a small hit on their overall margins. (a big hit on the margins of those phones) still it was going to happen and jobs has done more with the bad press to contribute to the "immeasurable harm" then anything gizmodo did. on the other hand gimodo did get a LOT of press and have probably doubled their popularity due to being on apples hit list. if jobs was smart (or not anal / overly proud of himself) he would have just let it go. this seems to be that he somehow want to win this fight when its a loosing battle to start with.

My thoughts exactly. I don't see where extortion comes in to play here, so Jobs needs to stop throwing that word around in such a matter-of-fact fashion. I call bullshit.

The Steve Jobs call and the posting of pics by Gizmodo was probably the same day from what I can tell. Gizmodo probably did post pics first which prompted the call from Steve.

You got a lot of other facts at least a little off:

"Guy loses iPhone" - can be debated. he said it was in his bag and it might have fallen out or been stolen.

"Someone finds it, makes a minor effort to locate said Guy" - Nope. The finders had his name and never tried to contact him personally. The finders called Apple tech support, (Apple Care).

"Apple refuses to acknowledge it's a real prototype or their product at all and basically ignores the building hype" - Huh? Apple tech support got a call about a potential prototype, which isn't their area of expertise. What did Apple refuse to acknowledge?

Please show me what Apple ignored. Gizmodo posted pics and got a call from Steve Jobs the same day. Apple also sent a letter, on company letterhead, the same day, asking for the phone back.

If you mean the lame call to Apple Care by the people who found the phone, that doesn't count as ignoring anything. The finders never called Gray Powell even though they had his name. They called what amounts to tech support at Apple who of course are not aware of prototypes.
 
I dont like them both, but I really think Apple is overreacting, the story and issue has been over a long time. its their fansite for ffs.
 
Gizmodo should have been banned from everything after fucking up people presentations at CES with that TV-b-gone thing.
 
And yet Gizmodo still continues to choke on the Apple dick.

Why the hell are they still promoting Apple's garbage when they get treated this way? Gizmodo has a serious case of Stockholm syndrome.
 
Gizmodo posted pics of the phone, Apple sent letter the same day. Gizmodo responded and agreed to comply that same day by AT LEAST 11:50pm (time of when the article about their compliance was posted, so probably much earlier).

I don't see what Gizmodo did wrong here. Apple are acting like a bunch of fucking assholes like usual.
