Need to convert WMV file to DVD-player compatible format ASAP!

I have been recruited to convert a WMV file to a DVD player compatible format for a funeral tomorrow. In other words, I have a .wmv, and need this movie on a CD/DVD that will play in a standard DVD player. This means I need a good, free .wmv to ?mpeg2 converter, and I have no idea where to start. The computer I am using only has a CD/RW, but the file is only about 100mb, so that shouldn't be a problem. Thanks!
 
Well, that's because you're using DVD Maker to make a DVD, not a CD, silly.

You can use something like Nero to create a VideoCD that should play just fine in DVD players even though what you'll be making and burning is an actual CD - that's Compact Disc, not DVD which is Digital Versatile Disc.

Not meaning to point a finger here but, they're two different things obviously.

VideoCD is the predecessor to modern DVD discs. VideoCD content was designed strictly for CDs (hence the name, "Video CD") and as such is effectively guaranteed to be playable on any modern DVD player whether it's car, boat, plane, TV, desktop, set top, portable, PC, doesn't matter.

Go get the trial version of Nero at (unless you already have a version of Nero, you don't have to use the latest and greatest, all of them since version 1 can make VideoCDs):

and convert the content to a VideoCD which will only use a CD. 10 minutes of footage should result in a file for that CD that's roughly 100MB since VideoCD uses industry standard MPEG1 for the encoding, but the VideoCD you'll end up with isn't an ordinary CD - it can only be played in VideoCD or DVD players.

If that's too confusing, well, that's because VideoCD never took hold in most parts of the world but was extremely popular (and still is) in Japan and some parts of Europe.

Anyway, get Nero, use the portion of that software that lets you convert your media files to playable discs, and choose the VideoCD option. I would be telling you to just use the same software to create a DVD but, as you only have a CD drive (CD and CD-RW, same thing when you burn them), that's what you have to use:

The VideoCD format.

I know all this already, hence why I was asking purely for a codec conversion util. Thanks for the info, either way!

Thanks for the info. I ended up using Any Video Converter, which really worked well and was hassle-free. I simply converted the .wmv to PAL mpeg2 and burned that file to the CD. It worked like a charm in the DVD player, as expected.
