Apparently it is standing room only on the top of Foxconn’s Shenzhen plant in China. Something is seriously wrong over there, ten deaths in 2010? Five suicides in May alone? Jeez.

Another male employee has fallen to his death from the roof of Foxconn Electronics' (Hon Hai Precision Industry's) employee dorm at its Shenzhen plant in China, the tenth incident involving falls from the roof of the plant in 2010, according to a Chinese-language yicai.com report. Of the 10 cases only two of the victims survived.

Guess someone unlocked another iPhone... <points to the quote in the sig from Kyle...>

Who knows.

Jeez. Are we sure these are suicides?

I wonder what would happen if Apple paid one dollar more per iProduct to be manufactuered and said to Foxconn that 100% of the money has to go to the workers or they're taking their business somewhere else...

Seriously, Apple is in some way response for this, and so are other companies that have their products manufactured for the lowest cost without regards for the safety of the workers. People are killing themselves to get this message across!

The world thinks you can build an iPod for fifty cents. Guess what, you can't. This is what happens.

And ultimately, we, the consumers, are responsible.

Go out and buy the next iPod. This death is on you.

Jesus. I hear they're also going to perform an excorcism at the plant. I wonder if the motherboards are haunted as well.

sounds like Foxconn needs to put a diving board on that roof /sarc

I doubt Foxconn has learned anything beyond not to put any tall buildings in to the next complex they build.

[Pretending for a moment that China would have an HR policy anything like in NA]
20% chance of getting turned down for long term disability due to suicide attempt. Grand.

All because Apple is too greedy to manufacture anything here. Sad.

should change the thread title to Steve Jobs kills another Chinese worker.

Wonder if they're taking insurance policies on their working like they do in the united states.

Steve jobs would be walking around the factory with a whip. But seriously, why haven't they just made these products here? It's not like there isn't a problem with the economy with jobs and stuff.

So apparently you can't just quit if it sucks, you know.. like we do?

Don't think they can. They get paid every October, so the workers have to hold out until then. If you quit in April, you probably don't get jack shit.

Because people here would rather be unemployed and bitching than working for a "low" wage.

Wow...did things just get worse in 2010 for them? Or did Apple just order to much extra stuff?

It's not just Apple. It's everyone. Toyota uses more American made parts than GM, WTF. Yet we bailed these fucks out. What about Pratt and Whitney? They have fucking government contracts yet are shipping work overseas. The electronics industry is probably the worst of them all. I don't even know that there is any turning back in that industry at this point.

Keep shopping at Walmart guys. This didn't happen over night.

No, it's because Foxconn (everyone really) would rather pay someone in China $2 an hour than pay a fair living wage anywhere else. What do they plan on doing when half of their consumers can no longer afford their ipods since they can't find work?

I dont see why this is even news, who really gives a shit if another foxconn worker tops themselves ? Its not like any of us know them personally.

If they hate there job that much then leave = problem solved.

All this drama

Why don't you move over to China with nothing and try and find work? There are no workers rights over there and FYI every PC that we are all using right now probably has parts from Foxconn. They are the biggest OEM in the industry.

Do you really think that all of this work being shipped overseas since they can treat their workers however the hell they want for next to no money doesn't effect you? How do you make a living?

It's a modern day sweat shop. I now feel bad to know that this is the cost of our relatively cheap electronics.

Unfortunately the "world" has a rather insatiable appetite for gadgets....everyone wants the latest and greatest, and apple (and everyone else) gives it to 'em.

At the expense of these poor bastards, who feel so stressed and trapped in their shit job they have to off themselves as the only way out.......

yikes.

And many people don't care, as some of the responses show.
I don't agree that people don't care it's that pretty much everything we have in the USA is manufactured in china or overseas. How many are willing to give up computers, mobile phones, TV, etc? Unfortunately there is no way around this problem.

Umm, I dont care what happens in china, I care what happens in MY country, if companies want to pay them a pittance then so be it, its got nowt to do with me as it doesnt impact my life.

It doesnt affect me, because hardware prices are still sky high, regardless if the hardware items are being made for pennies over there, they dont pass those super savings onto us, ok items could be made in the west instead, but we are too lazy and demand too much money and it doesnt make financial sense for companies to do so.

If you care so much then do something about it, boycott the companies that use foxconn and every other sweat shop using company out there and get all your friends and family to do the same as thats the only way that companies will change their practises.

And yes, I am sure there is plenty of jobs in China for those people to get if they so choose, china has a huge growing economy.

Things like this happen everyday in many countries, so why single out foxconn ? there are alot worse companies that make products for us that dont see the light of day in the media.

As I said before, this isnt news and I doubt very much that the company is driving them to kill themselves, even in china. I suspect underlying problems are the cause and working conditions probably have very little to do with these deaths.

Emo's spring to mind, as it is well known that chinse kids like their japanese counterparts are uber emo.

I asked what do you do for a living? When peoples jobs in OUR Country are being shipped over seas we have a problem. How do you think that the economy works? When people aren't making the type of money that they used to or worst of all can't find work at all I know that I won't be doing much if any work for them. People are likely to put off that new air conditioner and without a doubt can't afford that new home.

If you think that this doesn't effect you then you must be living in your own little world.

There will be a new suicide policy employed at Foxconn:
Workers are discouraged from jumping off tall buildings..instead the prefered method will be to /wrist themselves so their organs can be harvested.

Wow. Just wow.

Everyone has the choice to buy or not to buy. If you buy are you directly or even indirectly responsible for what is happening? Probably not but at least it sends a message. Sure, it may be a "small drop in the pool" but every bit counts. Maybe someday, we'll get there.

I have not been perfect in this regard but I have been changing my ways over the last few years, voting with my dollar to companies who cares in the way it provides it's services and/or products.

The Chinese are providing plenty of reasons to move production back here. Beyond just killing themselves, they're stealing and copying technology at a breakneck speed. The labor discount has been getting smaller and smaller besides.

BTW...can't wait to see how well China does if the US moves manufacturing out of there.
