In the networking and Security forum there's a big thread stickied with input from a ton of experienced people here that put a lot of time and effort into that stickied thread. In that thread are links to many tools which work very well.

AKM is actually a fairly easy rogue to clean up...it's very typical of most of the rogue/fake alert/scare-ware variants.

I found AKM a bitch to remove. In fact, it's threat level is 9.

I beg to differ as well, but with you. I've had four of my employees get it with some variant. The only issue I had was trying to do it remotely. If I have the computer in front of my, as I did with three of the four, it is quite simple to remove. As mentioned above, it's old news 'round here.
 
How does this thing get installed? Every web search I did CLEARLY shows it's malware and there's no easy way to download it, at least intentionally.
 
I wish I had an answer for that. Each of my users said they didn't know how it happened, but they always say that, to any issue they have, even ones I know they caused.

I also trust my experience as well...
MBam will nuke practically anything. And with ease.

I don't understand the whole "remotely" part of it though. Install MBam, update, scan, reboot: done. Should be removable remotely just fine.

Yea... It kindof is a great example of how much "kid" is still in us. Denying stuff they've done. It's also a great example of why honesty is the best way... It allows us to PREVENT that crap in the future, whereas if you just say 'I don't know how it happened' then you really don't help anything.

Especially with IE8 and UAC. IE prompts you. UAC prompts you. Two prompts minimum. I think it has more to do with social engineering than anything else... "Your computer is infected, clean now!" Some people honestly think they were doing good by downloading that. I've had someone actually spend $90 on a subscription to a malware AV one time...

The usual excuse I get is "I went to the (name of other room, e.g., bathroom) and when I came back, it was on my screen".

I always go "for God's sake will you fucking tell me what you did?" Nobody realizes it would save them minutes or even hours if the IT person knew what exactly happened instead of having to diagnose the computer every time.

If it's at work: nobody cares. Universally, people in any industry anywhere think IT people do nothing... They don't care about your time. It's a hobby, right? LOL
I remember a story here once a "friend of a friend" called up asking for computer help. The response was "Sure- your husband is a mechanic, he can change my oil while I work on the computer"... the lady's response? "Oh, my husband charges for stuff like that". Like I said, some people think we like fixing their problems all the time...

But if it's a client or something (IE, you aren't in-house IT staff) then it really hurts them in the pocketbook because they won't fess up to it. I guess it's kindof your gain at that point... But we don't like troubleshooting yet ANOTHER infection just because they won't fess up, regardless.

YES. Computers can be a hobby. YES. We like troubleshooting certain problems from time to time. YES. We like trying new toys and software.
NO. We don't enjoy fixing your screwups because you download everything in sight.
