Apology From McAfee

McAfee’s executive vice president of support and customer service apologized today via the company’s blog to all the people they hosed with that bad update. Think about that for a minute…none of the people affected can actually use their PCs to read the apology.:rolleyes:

First off, I want to apologize on behalf of McAfee and say that we’re extremely sorry for any impact the faulty signature update file may have caused you and your organizations.

You think they would have tried it out first before making the update available.
 
I'm pretty sure this wasn't the first time that a McAfee signature did this or something like it.

No it isn't the first time and it won't be the last until they go out of business. Although their stock actually went up through all of this and not down so I don't see that happening.
 
Like they don't test things? I quit using McAfee and Norton's years ago. Too buggy and slows the system down. Avaist works better for me. But really no Anti Virus will protect you completely. Safe surfing involves the Supercomputer on Top.

Quite sure it's covered in the nobody-reads EULA, or in this case, *not* covered LOL. This could quite frankly happen to any software company, it's happened to others in the past, it will happen again. Large corps. should have IT people who test this kind of stuff out first before deploying it to eleventybillion workstations.
 
But they haven't apologized for the last 14 years of being crap, and causing a system to BSOD right after the initial installation?

I am well aware they are going to take no financial responsibility for their actions. That was kind of my point. It's really easy to say "oops, my bad" it's another to actually step up and do something about it.
 
Of course many of you are asking how the faulty DAT made it past our quality assurance checks. The problem arose during the testing process for this DAT file. We recently made a change to our QA environment that resulted in a faulty DAT making its way out of our test environment and onto customer systems.

Hmmm, so what exactly did they change? And what testing do they actually do then?

We had this hit out company. Huge pain in the ass.

On the upside, the paycheck is gonna be a lot fatter with all the overtime I pulled in because of this.
 
Why do we put up with this crap from software companies. If you came to me to work on your Cat D7 or 966F or any other heavy piece of equipment and I presented you with a EULA before I begin my work, you would tell me to F right off and call in another mechanic. I do not understand how software companies can get away with it. As of right now I can not think of any business that can sell you some thing and present you with a EULA that takes away their right to not be held responsible for what they sell you. As a consumer I can't shop around on this one because they all have a EULA that says the same thing. Of all the professional fields that really matter, medical or dental, even they don't hand you a form of EULA before they do any work on your body saying their not responsible for their actions. My 2 cents.

Obviously, they stopped testing on WinXP since WinXP is obsolete and nobody uses it anymore. If it works on Win7/Vista, it should work fine on WinXP, right?

Hopefully people will learn. I finally got approved to roll out NOD32 and get rid of the Norton last week. Going to make that aspect of my job much less of a headache.
 
I am a contractor for the biggest chip maker in the world and many, many XP machines are still around and were affected, including mine. If this humongous chip maker still trusts McAfee, then I don't know what to say... I would think McAfee is going to be losing huge contracts when they expire. Let's see what their stock does then! hehe...

Also we had a fix available within hours but it had to be applied manually to each machine. I'm sure many people are able to read the apology by now, Steve. I'm not sure why you would say NONE can?
 
All Ameriprise computers are repaired and today is my day off :)

 
Try asking why this got out.

Some companies have stopped raises for several years in a row.

Some companies have enforced mandatory PTO equating to over a week a year sometimes over two weeks a year.

Some companies of cut matching of 401k.

Some companies of been robbing peter to pay paul.

I wonder what happens to the quality of product and support whenever that happens.

Don't forget about outsourcing. If they can replace one warm body with one over seas, for a fraction of the price, that's job #1. Other items of measurement like customer satisfaction, quality, and SLA are never used after the outsourcing takes place. Hard to pay attention to those items when your saving all that money, right?:rolleyes:
 
Honestly yes. Most of the development of that company. And sadly many many others is now overseas.
 
This POS took down 500+ computers in my company
over 3 locations. On ataff 5 people had to work
an extra 5 hour day, to restore our servers and
network. Were all salaried, nothing in it for us.

It cost us 25 grand in one day!
We had to shut down production.

Our CFO will review, when the contract renewal
comes around, I suspect we will have new software.

Good riddence, it was a pain in the butt.
 
It should have read "Sorry for being a shitty AV product for many years and we are extra sorry for the suckers that had problems"

Mcafee has always been just as bad as symantec in my book.
 
One of my service writers had 5 pc's trash themselves from this. One was the work laptop, the other 4 were his home machines. When it went down, I saw that something from mcafee did it, but I had no idea what. It was fast and easy at that time to just format and reinstall since he had current backups of his work data. Then the next morning I saw the patch...oh well. It was an easy fix, but I feel SORRY for the ones hit bad...ugggggg.....
 
This one pissed me off big time when it happened, even tho it was only one machine affected for me at the time. Was in the middle of doing a new video card in a customers machine when suddenly locked out, spyware style... went crazy trying to find the damn thing that had done it, constantly replacing svchost only to have it gone again 30 seconds later... before finding out it was mcafee's fault, already hated mcafee since they detect most my malware removal tools as viruses and nuke em while i'm doing cleanups, but this just topped the cake for my hatred of them.
 
Just amazes me that a "change" in QA could cause all this chaos. Ugh, McAfee and Symanetc suck.
 
This one hit my Mom's XP box. She's one of the technically uninclined people that you dread assisting, and it figures she'd be the one with the problem.

Over all, the fix was fast and easy, I was done in just a couple mins. Nothing lost, other than a day with out her computer. Though I lost my whole morning answering questions I knew she wouldn't ever understand the answer too.....

I've never had a problem with McAfee, and will continue to use it till it does something to piss me off. Just like I did with Symantec.
 
This sucked hard, got a message telling me about the issue early in the morning waking me up. It took the whole day to get things working at our office and work just started to pile up. Why must they use this pos av software...

You should try Microsoft Security Essentials. Cheaper than McAfee too!
 
This event really shows how messed up the market can be at times. People get 1 bad piece of news about steve jobs and apples shares can drop. McAfee causes a shitload of companies networks to fall on their ass and result in outages for a day and their stock goes up.

Hopefully all of these companies are much smarter and move to something else.
 
We migrated off of them a little over a year ago to declining detection rate, install issues and well COST!

Really? for what their product does I can't believe that this wasn't unit tested before release!
 
Any time anyone says "we're sorry for any inconvenience we may have caused" they're not apologising at all. This statement (as opposed to an apology) is an insult and a giant waste of space and drastically lowers my opinion of them, even more than what it was for their obvious lack of testing.
 
Nice, real class. How about instead of apologizing, you fire the dude that did not test the update.
 
I wondered why they were reimaging all the computers in the lab at school yesterday. They use McAfee, so I guess this is why.
