Network pics thread

It's his portable dirty movie tailor :D

Come on Captain .. Pics from you now

Hmmm, mayhaps I'll take some picks of the rack and post them after I get my WHS rebuilt this weekend. Got some gear from the Newest of Eggs that just arrived at my doorstep . . . . .

Hope this fits here. This was a "project" set before me by my previous job and it was my first time ever really doing any rack cable management. I had to do all the work below within the course of 2 days for an audit..which was organize the cable management like it should be and label each cable to it's corresponding port on the patch panel. Oh and it was a 24/7 call center so it all had to be done during production hours..all the while still performing my daily duties as a Desktop Support Specialist!

Before..

During..

After Untangling..(Everything left connected is what was necessary to keep network connectivity throughout most of the building)

Done..kind of..I was told by my boss to utilize every cable that was originally taken out as to not waste anything.

Enjoy!

Anyone know where I can find computer related images/icons like the ones used in diagrams in this thread? I'd like to be able to create similar diagrams using something like Gimp or Open Office Draw, but I can't find any images.

Don't do it the hard way, use gliffy.com. You will need to sign up but you can then save 5 drawings/diagrams/whatever and it allows you to export them as jpg and png.

Very cool site, thanks jtg1993! If anyone knows of any more free icons that I could use with something like gliffy.com I'd appreciate it. :)

And you can embed dynamic links, so (say, for your own site or something) you can have it dynamically change everywhere.

^Who says we aren't? :)

Well, I myself never pay for Visio. I'm lucky enough to work for companies that own licensing for it. Some folks aren't so fortunate, however, and gliffy works well enough for those that don't want to shell out a few hundred bones to make a fancy diagram of their home network. :D

Yeah, I know...and?

Gliffy is working fine for me, but I'd always been interested in free Visio icons if I could somehow use them with Gliffy.

Apparently those people need to get fortunate

Moar pics, less talk!

My poor home setup until I can figure out how to run CAT5e up two floors and across the house. Coax will have to do for now. Once I go Cat5e, that Actiontec is getting double-nat'ed and a pfsense box is going in its place.

Thanks! For about a half hour or so of work I managed to throw together a pretty nice network layout.

Got a basement and attic?

Look for a vent stack that goes top to bottom, you can run some fiberglass wire fish rods down right next to it without drilling holes or cutting drywall.

Tried that. I tried all the vent openings in the attic and can't find where they connect to in the basement.

Shitty. No common walls either I take it?

Might just have to crack into the drywall and run some panduit or something.

Or PVC on the outside of the house.

Thought I would share some pics of my server room. (my baby) :)

Sorry about the bad quality, I took these vids with my iphone. Some of the cables are not very pretty right now because I'm in the middle of a few projects. Hope you enjoy!

Most switches are Cisco 2970's. I can provide a full gear list if anyone wants to know.

Wow  Is that personal? What do you do with it?

No, it's my server room at work. It's a data center / call center for about 700 users.

Gear list (there is newer equipment installed since the time of the recordings posted, so I'll list that also):

Fiber - Cisco ONS 15454
38x (not all are shown) Switches - Cisco 2970's (everything is gigabit)
Router - Cisco 7204 VXR (OC3 connection)
Firewall - 2x (redundant) Cisco ASA 5520's
Core Switch - Cisco 6506e with 2x 48 port blades
VPN - Cisco 3005 Concentrator

Extra Comcast cable connection

Servers:
4x Dell 1950's
Dell 2850
4x Dell 2950's
Dell R710
2x IBM Xseries 345 (peripheral gateways)
Sun Netra 210
3x custom phone tap servers
Snap Server 410 (NAS)
Dell Powervault 122T Robotic Tape Library

APC Symmetra Power Management
APC Network Air FM Blowers/Chillers

PBX system is Avaya.

User workstations are mostly Dell Optiplex 760 small form factor machines. (around 700 of them in this building)

The funny thing is it's just me (network admin), and one other guy (desktop support) that run all of this stuff. Our telecom guy got outsourced! It's a lot of fun though. :)

APC Symmetra Power Management

We have these at work. They are really pretty nice. We don't have the same chillers We actually have the APC In Row cooling which is actually pretty bad ass.

Anyways here is my contribution today. New goodies for the lab:

Cisco 3550 (Running EMI Firmware, It's the L3 Switch For the Lab)
Cisco 2948g-L3 (Layer 3 switch, Not sure What I'm going to do with this yet.)
Cisco 2620 (Was the router for the lab, but still working on what I want to do with it too.)

Nice little datacenter, did you stand it up or inherit it? Why the 15454, you joining some providers ring along with the other optical trunks that you have?

nisuj, I know the feeling, but I just got a full 42U at home. Just got done getting all of the screw's/ears for all of my equipment. Just need a rack mount case for my server. But, I might cut down the rack to a 32U, I need to be able to fit the beast into my closet. lol

I couldn't pass up a panduit 2 post rack for 20 bucks ;). Kid I knew used it for a while then it sat in his closet because he never used it.

At least you have racks at all listed at your location! I would have to drive 4 hours to get an overpriced 500$ old used crappy rack.

This thread is full of server porn. <3

Wish I could be like one of you guys someday. D:
