Star Ocean: The Last Hope

I just finished the earth part with the car girl.

Holy hell the voice acting is the worst I have ever seen, and the forced emotion just makes it that much worse.

Edge is a whinny little cry baby worse than a girl on the rag. If the fighting was so fun and the story so interesting this part would have made me put the game away for good. Seriously watching that was painful.

I am stuck on a part of disc 2 and im about ready to throw my controller

/spoiler

I landed on a planet (forget the name) that had been bombed by the phantoms. I am at the part where you get ambushed multiple times by groups of phantom foot soldiers. How the hell do you take these guys down. I get that you need to blindside them, but I get 5 of them firing that purple crap at me and it knocks me out of blindsides.

They are very strong, some of the strongest normal enemies out there. You dont even have to blindside them if you dont want. You really just have to get behind them and whap them.

Rush mode. Just use mad chain combos after a blindside (You DO have chain combos to ten right?)

Sounds like you know what you are talking about. What skills are a must? I just got to disc 2 and the only skill i really pumped was HP boost. (jesus that thing is almost broken good. atleast thats what it seems to me)

I just cant tell what skills would actually be useful and what ones are a waste.

Critical Hit is a must have for any character that can learn it. If you're having trouble with the Aeos ambuse, just use Reimi and spam Crimson Squall after Berserking and Focusing.

I picked it up and am not far at all yet (just to the part where you get the little symbol girl), but I am really enjoying it so far. VA is meh, but I expected that. Otherwise everything is great so far. Really like the change in combat and no-random encounters.

This time when I tried the ambush, it was cake. Full bonus board for 54k XP ftw. I used Edge, Reimi, Sarah, and Myuria. I turned off all Sarah's attack skills, and Reimis single target or crappy skills.

I downed the insect boss, in one attempt. I thought I was going to need a bunch of sage? Most of the boss HP bars are useless as they don't appear to function.

Part of the style I believe. Adds to the challenge and suspense I guess.

As far as the groups of shadows - that was the one place in the game where I decided to sit and grind levels - especially given the save point / energy point just before the fight. Got everyone to 50 and it was cake. Though I technically did beat it in the 30s when I started using the EM bombs (or whatever). Wasn't satisfied with such an item wastey win.

It's funny - I'll redo part of any game where I end up using certain high powered items in order to win. Every RPG I play I seem to hoard super heal type potions and hold them sacrosanct so that even at the end of the game they're still there. Self-defeating but it's some long term issue I've had.

Which speaking of - finally beat the game this weekend - though I'll probably go through it again on the next higher difficulty. I get the feeling I missed alot the first time around - not really realizing how many ship sequences there were until I was more than halfway through... never really modded any items - and barely created any - only those necessary for some of the end quests. And there are either 3 or 4 character endings that I know I missed out on.... then there's those stinking battle trophys... Alas I think I never even took a look at how to use the monster jewels either.

While I found the voice acting varying from "acceptable" to "stab-myself-in-the-head-with-a-screw-driver-able"... kay? And the story wasn't quite as in-depth as I'd like - there was definitely a good quality about the game with alot of hidden depth to the game - even if it's not in the story's writing...kay?

*shudders*

The only time I get freezing (playing over HDMI at 1920x1080) is when my party gets owned and i get the chance to switch characters. Once I select one, it typically freezes.

Could any of you confirm they left the Japanese voices intact on the full US version?

The last boss, can eat my ASS!

I'm fighting it RIGHT NOW. I have a 6 hour fight in front of me if what I read is correct... Dealing 16k per rush assault, with ONLY lymle alive, and NO reviving items. FML.

[edit] Frakking jewel of indignation :( So close to getting past the hard part of the fight :(

LOL yeah the last boss is a rude awakening he definately fits what last bosses should be. I was using the big rack elf and disabled all her spells except for faerie heal and resurrect I highly suggest this strategy as it saved my ass.

I got to the 3rd planet in ~2 days of playing (I waste a good bit of time when I play RPG's just fighting tons of random encounters and exploring every inch of the maps). It was pretty good, for a single player game I really like it.

Fighting is fun, though TBH I never blindside, I just sit back and let Edge tank stuff while I spam skills or evade (if targetted) with Reimi.

I like the story, and so far I've actually enjoyed the voice acting. Sure, it's not GREAT, but it's much better than I expected (FF10) and beats the pants off any English dub I've ever heard.

I haven't played it in 2 weeks though, due to school/dota/wow/etc... I don't allocate a lot of my time for single player games, unless I'm really bored or can't find an interesting anime/manga.

Japanese voices on a game published by Square? You must be joking! :p

No Japanese voices for us.

....*sigh* Why doesn't Square get it. Well, that's a lost sale right there. I'm not sitting through horrible English voice acting. I'm tired of big burly guys that refer to themselves with "Ore" sounding like wimps, "cute" girls sounding like children (US voice actresses can never get the "Shy girl" voice right), and awkwardly timed lines.

Can't we at LEAST get an alternate voice pack as DLC? I really feel I shouldn't have to pay for it, but if you absolutely couldn't fit it on the disc, then so be it.

So much love for Trusty Bell, Lost Odyssey, Street Fighter IV, and Valkyria Chronicles. All others from learn from them. Tales of Vesperia dropped the ball, and I'm sad to see Star Ocean do the same.

I thought Vesperia had a pretty good dub to be honest. While I would of liked Mai Nakahara as Estelle among other things, ToV's dub wasn't bad. SO4 on the other hand..... Could of benefited from the Japanese cast being kept intact.

I'm with you on the Japanese track DLC. It would allow me to finish IU!

I'm waiting for the cost to drop to pick it up. I started playing SO2 and SO:Till The End of Time recently and got bit by the bug.

I thought about playing this game in the last month.
Then I read through all the "real" gamer reviews
I refuse to waste my time or money on any game where they strip down the options in the US releases
I'll just bum a copy of the original japanese release off a friend and play it.

know this is an old thread, but anyone get last hope international for PS3?? I was looking at this game yesterday, trying to find a new RPG that isn't something that will force me to spend countless hours learning to play it or that is just so effing impossible I won't enjoy it. I just finished playing Xenosaga 3 and I need a new rpg now.

I already have FF13 and I hate the battle system so much, I won't play it.

Any othe suggestions for PS3 RPGs? I am more of a story player and like to play these games for the characters, story and video stuff more so than the battling.

I enjoyed SO4 much more than FF13. I actually bought it with the money I got back trading in FF13. The story is dumb and it is obvious they have no real idea what evolution is/means (strickly change over time), but the gameplay was better than FF13 in my opinion. It is an extremely long game if you decide to go 100% and even if you just want to complete both of the secret dungeons it will probably take you 100+ hours.

I too was looking for a good story driven RPG on the playstation, our options are rather limited. Try Eternal Sonata, I was rather impressed with that game, although I returned my rented copy after a night so I wasnt too far into the story. I plan to buy it once my fiance and I are back in the same city/state do to it having the option of muliplayer and its connection with music.

+1 to everything you said. I put over 100 hours into SO4... I had to drop FF13 after 15 hours, couldn't stand it anymore. I also liked Eternal Sonata a lot, and if it's out for PS3 I'd recommend it.

Yeah I put more time in to beating (Well, getting to the last boss, running out of healing items then dying moments before victory then giving up on the game) SO4 than FF13.

That said, I still liked 13 more...

Great game though. Without a doubt worth the money.

wow, i put like 145 hours and there were still two bosses after the last 2 dungeons that i couldn't beat. personally i fell in love with this game but it might be because i how much i like the style of games like this. Tales of Vesperia was huge hit to me as well.

i just gave up. after close to 100 hours you will be done with both dungeons then its all grinding... if you end up beating the queen of the universe let us know. i never got to see her.

Yeah, the combat keeps you interested I think. It makes the random battles a lot more interesting when you are kick flipping dudes into the air or trying for achievements.
