Looks like 6-core will be on AM2+ afterall

what a waste. we aren't even using all 4 cores we have now. they really should be trying to break the speed barriers instead of just upping the cores until apps and games are utilizing them. let's see some 4-6 ghz processors....then ill be impressed. or even better, since amd/ati has the crossfire going, maybe they could implement some sort of dual processor (ala crossfire) capability along the same line.

The fastest clock speed released by Intel or AMD to date was 3800MHz in a stock CPU. This was in 2005.

There is a very large number of factors driving the number of cores up and the clock speeds down.

If by crossfire with CPUs, do you mean ... dual socket? something that has been common place for almost 15 years? Way to be informed and keep up with technology.

I think he means dual core gpu like 2 gpus in 1 gpu core instead of 2 single gpus on one pcb.

How many old AM2+ motherboards are getting updates for these X6's? Foxconn is outright refusing to update the BIOS on the Destroyer (Socket AM2+, Nforce 780a, Tri SLI), which is rather annoying.

That said, if the X6's are as AM2+ compatible as AMD has made them sound, these new chips may work in the Destroyer without an update. Guess we'll just have to wait for someone to try it.

its foxconn you expected anything else? worst customer service/support out there which is typical from an oem manufacture.. my guess is that even if they actually updated shit im sure they would run into problems with the nforce 780a chipset.. but thats just my guess..

I expected a motherboard with "AM2+ Support" printed on the box (without any form of disclaimer) to actually support all AM2+ processors.

Well, Asus didn't seem to have any trouble updating their Nforce boards for Phenom II X6 support...

X6 is AM3, just because the cpu is backward compatible doesnt mean that all AM2+ boards have to support it. Theres a few asus boards with AMD chipsets in them that are AM2+ that don't support AM3 even.

GPUs are already set up like that :p

Not completely. I know the architecture is like having multiple cores but having one gpu with like 2 dies fused together might be something he had in mind.

Most high end boards are most likely getting the updates.

is there any info on prices for the X6?

Will they push down the prices of quad cores / dual cores?

You might want to read up a bit more on the Phenom II X6's. AMD made sure these were perfectly AM2+ compatible.

An AMD engineer was quoted as saying:
"If the mainboard manufacturer stuck to the correct pin layouts for the CPU Socket and didn't implement their own off the books features, the X6s should work in ALL AM2+ boards with a BIOS update. The BIOS would just need to contain a micro-code update."

All of AMD's press releases stress AM2+ compatibility, these X6's should work in more motherboards than the older AM2+/AM3 Phenom II's and Athlon II's

Thats good, i was hoping for am2+ support. I have the dfi 790FXB-M2RSH ddr2 version and my brother has the ddr3 version of the same board. Everything is exactly the same except the ddr3 slots. No difference at all in layout or anything. It would be dumb for amd to lose out on those sales of am2+ users. I know i might get one of these when it comes out. :)

I read that the turbo core feature needs a AM3 board. Read it on an a AMD promo page that had an asterisk next to the turbo feature. Anyone have any further insight on this, and how O/C'ing works on these chips with a turbo feature?

I was at Fry's today and they had a sign advertising the 1055T for $200 and the 1090T for $300. Despite the sign being prominently displayed in their CPU section, they wouldn't sell me one :mad::rolleyes: because the computer said it was before the street date.

They weren't sure if it would be out in a week or two weeks but I think I heard the 18th mentioned as a possibility... dunno. Reading between the lines though they have stock or they probably would have told me 'not in yet'

My AM2+ board supports the Turbo Core feature with the F9 bios update
HEXUS.net talks about the turbo core feature.

frys in houston off 59 i believe said they had them. .....amd told them not to sell them yet. they took down the price tags too.

does that mean turbo mode is disable?
EDIT nm post above confirmed working.

IMO it's very likely that the X6's will still work in boards that never got a bios update.

I want one badly. Im trying to sell my friend my unlocked 555 @ 3.8ghz, Ta785GE w/ 6gb ram, GTX275. In order to upgrade to a x6, crossfire motherboard, 4gb ddr3, and 2x5770 lol.

time will tell.

What we really need is another one of those "shootout" reviews like they did a while ago to check how many AM2 motherboards support AM2+ processors.

We need another one to determine how many AM2+ motherboards support these X6's...with and/or without a BIOS update.

This thread brings me back to the days when I ran my 940BE on a M2N Sli... Seems lots is "possible" in the AMD am2/am2+/am3 trifecta.

Which is great not having to upgrade your motherboard and cpu at the same time. There's only been one time I've ever "needed" to upgrade and that was when I got my Abit KT7-Raid (Non A Version) running on the VIA 133 chipset. When the Athlon XPs finally came out, I couldn't have been happier to get an AMD 761 chipset (Abit KG7-Raid) and get rid of that terrible VIA board.

Biostar really needs to step up to the plate and release new bios's for the 790gx series. I would love one of these in my TA790GX3 A2+ !!!

I read a statement on the BioStar website saying it's AM2+ boards will receive a Bios update to support the X6. But so for nothing for my board (in sig) . There is no reason they should because it support 140w processors, plenty of power to handle the X6.

what if, and this is a big IF, they were waiting for the processors to actually be released BEFORE releasing a bios for a Processor that as of now no one can use......

I contacted Gigabyte about X6 support on my MA790X-UD4P, and was told that:
"Dear customer, It still under validation with AMD, plesae check back with us two weeks later."

I'm really hoping that there will be an updated BIOS, because I'm looking at either the 1035T or the 1055T.
